Just like Messier, On to the first of many cup runs

He looks like Jason Statham with hair.

He’s shown a lot of growth this season, it’s been awesome to see. He’s become a much more dangerous player because of the fact that he is constantly moving his feet. In years past he would get swallowed up because once he got the puck it was easy for opponents to box him in and eliminate along the boards. That’s not the case now.

After Fox, Panarin and Trocheck he's the most engaged player on the team. I can't imagine how good that line will be when he improves his shot. Literally all that's missing.

Also ~40th in total xG and xG/60 among players with 300+ mins played
I think his high-danger chances were 21st.

Love that he had a huge game against the debs.

There was that one poster whiskeythedevils who would rip Laf on the mainboards. Do respect that poster though for their takes on Fox before he exploded into the Norris caliber player he became
I don’t think he ripped on him so much as he disputed his hype. And we’ve got to be honest, as good as Lafreniere has looked, his opinion hasn’t been proven wrong yet. If Lafreniere becomes like say Huberdeau I think that’d be great. I don’t know about him becoming a 100-point player.

Here comes all the people that trashed Lafreniere and now they are trying to make it something any more than lack of opportunity. Had they played him with Panarin out the gate and let him make the odd mistake he'd have come along a lot quicker. His biggest problem was that the coaches wouldn't let him be creative and punished him for mistakes.

You can see how much he really needed the PP1 time to develop. He's looked like a totally different player this year.
The point was that he developed MORE SLOWLY, than other high picks, because of a lack of the opportunities high picks are almost ALWAYS given, including PP1. My contention was always that he was going to take LONGER with the non “high pick usage” he was getting, not that he WOULDN’T develop. It’s really not that complicated. And look what happened when he was finally stapled to top notch linemates (and not yanked around every time he f***ed up like he was in previous seasons) the way most high picks are from the get go.
Meanwhile, as recently as early this season people here were crying “bust,” “trade him for whatever we can get,” “he deserves a PTO for his next contract”…
Ive maintained all along that he would come around, that we needed to be patient. It was a way more accurate assessment than “he’s a bust,” “career 3rd liner” and the rest of the nonsense the Laf detractors were constantly spewing.

This, in absolute SPADES.

You can see the confidence growing. In a lot of ways, it’s about committing to the idea of shooting the puck. When you enter a new league, you don’t want to turn the puck over, and you view shooting and not scoring as essentially a turnover. So you defer. Pass. Don’t drive to the net. I have no idea what they were saying to Laf and Kakko after the draft but I would have been demanding on Day 1 that they strive for five shots on goal per game.

For the chart guys. Wheres laff rank at even strength amongst the entire nhl production wise? Hes gotta be top 10

Bingo. The point about PP1 for years was about opportunity. Yes, people clamored he should get an opportunity he hadn’t “earned” yet. Because most, if not all, other 1st overall picks got similar opportunity. And that opportunity allowed them to develop faster.

Laf didn’t get that opportunity or much 5v5 opportunity and he didn’t develop quickly. He finally is and his development is flying. This is how these things go for everyone who isn’t an absolute world beater that can take the NHL by storm the second they’re there.

Does it throw the idea of meritocracy for a loop? For sure. But maybe the merit needs to be based on why he was selected #1 overall and not based on his early NHL performance. Because, again, that’s how it is for all other 1st overall picks.

Oh, and the NHL *is* a developmental league. The restrictive salary cap forcing low AAV, highly selected picks into the lineup before they’re ready simply from a cap management perspective forces the league into being a developmental one.

The stupid linking of this website is broken, so I’ll just add the quote here just in case:
I don't think this is a great comparison, but I do think Laf should try to look into how Filip Forsberg grew his game and turned into a really good scoring winger. Part of that started with Laviolette throwing him into the fire as a top-line LW, PP1 player in Nashville in his D+4 year. Laf's in the same spot now.

Like I said, it's not perfect, but I think it's a good player for Laf to try to model his game after. Part of the issue for me is that I don't think he knows what type of player he wants to be at the NHL level. Peca did really well with Jack Quinn and JJ Peterka these last two years. Muse has done a great job with the USNTDP. I think there's a good support system in place to help Laf take the next step. Laf has to take the next step for himself now too.

Wrote this about Laf back in July, and I think the comparison is becoming a pretty solid one. He’s been dynamic off the rush this year and honestly should have at least 10-12 more points based on his own poor shooting luck and his teammates not finishing prime chances. It took him a bit to pop, but he’s turning into everything we’ve needed him to this year, and I can see him still adding layers to his game simply by working on his shot more this offseason. He put in the work this summer and it’s shown.
