Kids a stud... been saying it for a while....
He was even good at the end of last season... just couldn't get any puck luck.
Id rather forget last season. 2023-24 Laf was the Laf I hoped we would see in 2022. I view 2022 as a step back and 2023 as a huge step forward.

A little update for Laffy

13G, 17A, 30P after 50 Games. Getting 17:19 per game,

On pace for 21G, 28A for 49P which will be a career high for him.

Breaking 50 points would be an obvious goal and a strong mark considering his lack of usage on PP1.
If he got PP1 time he would easily break 60 points this year.

Is he ever going to be a franchise player tier 1st overall? Probably not. Can he be a 1st line winger who in his prime is a perennial 70-80 point guy? Absolutely.

It is a shame though that we didn't trade him for Josh Anderson when we had the chance. What a stud that guy is with his 13 points at $5.5 million a year. :sarcasm:

Yeah I think he tops out around a 70-80p kinda guy with consistent PP1 time.

Doubt hell reach elite status, but he won't be a bust by any stretch

Panarinitis. The only cure is shaving his head.
I'd second that actually.

ZiBALDejad

Like a week before playoffs.

I think we may have found the new playoff avy theme...

the most frustrating thing is that he's not going to stop doing it.

Seems like something a coach should be taking care of but i doubt Lav is allowed to even speak to Zib as per his contract.

Exactly this. Watching him skate down the LW side with a flat footed D, cut to the backhand with time and space, knowing he can cut back to the forehand and rip a 40 goal scoring wristshot anywhere he wants from his offwing, and knowing 100% that no matter what he does, he's obviously going to pass to Kreider is beyond predictable.

Georgiev could've just hung out at the far post and waited for Kreider to shoot, and spared everyone the drama.

Surely, Mika went back to his forehand and picked a corner here, or cut to the middle and beat Georgiev before the D could close on him, right?

Watch what happened, in case you don't remember:

He needs to shoot, and the coaching staff needs to make him shoot. And not just his tired one timer.

He set up a much better scoring chance with that pass than he would have had with the shot.

I think that pass was a bad decision though. Too likely that it doesn't get through.

That stuff isn't on him though. It's on the coaches. The same way Trouba shooting way too much on the PP is a coaching issue. Coaches are supposed to recognize these things and take steps to correct them. You can't expect the players to break out of their typical habits on their own.

The pass was a bad decision because he skated himself out of the play before he made it. At the point he cut wide of the net (right before he made the pass), he had no shot, and the goalie read it and started going cross ice to deny Kreider.

If he drives the net, he can go forehand to five hole or try to catch Georgiev in motion to pick either side from his offwing. Or he can keep the puck on the backhand (which keeps the pass in play) and roof it short side if Georgiev cheats pass, or go backhand/forehand to far side or five hole.

The route he took literally put him in a position where the only thing he could do was pass, because he was clearly thinking pass the entire time, which made reading the cross-ice pass much easier and took away any chance for him to use his elite shot to try and score a goal.

100% the coaching staff needs to address this with him. It's infuriating watching a 40 goal scorer pass like late career Adam Oates, and the coaching staff doesn't seem to be willing to tell him to shoot more, or if they are, aren't willing to enforce it with a benching when he's having a particularly bad game, then give him another shot next period/next game to get back to being the elite player he needs to be.

I don't really agree with that even from the still image you posted. If he moves the puck to his forehand there are two defenders in the area who would be in pretty good position to poke check the puck or block a shot.

He's not passing anymore than usual though. He's been in between 11 and 12 shot attempts per 60 in 5 of the last 6 years.

Zib does next to nothing to disguise the pass or really make any of the Avs think twice about anything. He glides in with the puck on his backhand, gets below the dots still with the puck on his backhand, and makes a pass on his backhand. There's zero deception. With his slapper, he has to hold his stick at a 90 degree angle for at least 15-20 seconds to indicate that he is powering up in order to take a shot. He has to hang out with Fox a little more.

Makar was covering the cross ice Kreider pass. The backchecker was trailing with his stick to take away the passing lane to Miller. The backchecker's stick doesn't come forward until Zibanejad starts to skate himself out of the play by gliding to the side of the net (he stopped skating hard at the circle).

If he drives the net, the backchecker is out of the play completely and Makar either decides to close on him or stay on the pass. If Makar collapses, then he has a better passing lane from a scoring area that will be harder to read, and he'll be making it before he's out of the play. If Makar stays on Kreider, he has a clear lane to the net.

Skating to the side of the net and backpassing into the slot was far from his best choice in that situation.

They are going in now.

Something else I’ve seen is not only is he drawing lots of penalties but I’m also seeing a little more respect given to him by some defenseman, especially tonight.

Hes earned it but that’s really dangerous for the opposition. If you give Laf more time and space instead of trying to close him off, he’s gonna do even more damage.
