He just needs some direction on how to not get closed off everytime he carries the puck into the offensive zone. He's not fast enough to get behind any defender that i've seen.

Figure that out and then maybe we can tackle how he does or doesn't make plays with his linemates to generate offense.

The kid can finish, for sure. Just need to be patient.
Not patience, give the kid ice time and let him adjust, playing 10 or 12 mins a night isn't getting him involved in the game. Put him in Trocheks spot too on pp1 but they'll never do that because Drury signed Trockek to that big contract and wants his stats to reflect it.

I think laf may have a more dangerous shot than trocheck and the PP has gone a bit stale. It couldn’t hurt.

The only issue is, Trocheck wins face offs for that unit.

The PP isn't stale. They're just shooting 4% the last two weeks. They're generating as many chances as anyone.

Of the 24 games that Laf has played this season, only 3 of them have been in the 12 minute TOI and nothing below that. Thing is, the stats of the games where he's played 12 minutes vice playing 18 minutes are just basically the same.

That bumper spot is important to open a pass to Zibanejad. With a lefty there it's easier to defend the shot and it's more of a deflection spot, but we use Kreider for that. So it's a bit more difficult to get Zibanejad those one-timers without a righty in that bumper spot being watched. With that said, the pp isn't very productive right now so may as well try to change it a bit.

I don't think it's production. I think it's confidence. You touch the puck more you have more confidence. Especially for a younger player. If you're chasing or being hammered in our own end, you're not getting any puck feel and you're not making any great plays with it.

Laf is slow and should be playing with players who play fast. It'll open up space for him. It will also give him a confidence boost to be touching the puck more without just cycling it on the boards or clearing it.

True.

One thing about this team, for as long as I can remember recently, our offensive system has been TRASH. I am so sick of watching other teams gain the zone by skating and then using passing to open up lanes for other players. Watching the Rangers use dump and chase as the end all, be all of our offense for so long is sickening. Especially when its a 50/50 toss up that we recover the dumps in the O-zone. I want to say that we're a fast, young team but I can't ever f***ing tell because if it isn't the usual suspects (Bread, Z, Tro) gaining the zone by skating without dumping, it's rarely ever done consistently.

I don't really think we're a fast team. You can go down the list and there's hard working players, or players that move their legs, but they aren't the quickest. Kakko isn't the slowest but he's not fast. Laf isn't fast. Carpenter isn't fast. Goodrow isn't fast. Blias isn't fast. Panarin looks like he's skating in mud. Kreider only skates when he wants to. I think we just have too many of those players who can't bring speed to the lineup.

Laf loves Gallant. He gets cised.

Drury gets geometry. Gallant gets geometry. Kreider gets geometry. Common sense gets geometry.

And not converting...the most important part.
Don't worry they can't shoot 4% forever, never mind the fact that every team knows what we're trying to do and probably explains why we're shooting 4%. Oh and bad luck too. Can't forget that one.

Laughy is bad, why is he on the 2nd PP or playing OT. What does he deserve to get that Ice time? His draft position. He has been no better than the 4th liners. Absolute shit player needs to be moved asap. For his sake too.

The play he made with a couple of minutes left in the third was embarrassing. Going in on the right side facing a defenseman and instead of trying to make a play or make a move around him he just pulls up and circles back

Yeah, the same thing Panarin does every time he enters the zone. Laf did it like 3 times in the 3rd/OT.

It doesn't work for Bread, now he's doing it

Not going to talk shit about the guy who's second in points on this team and consistently gets 50+ points per season and almost reached 100 last season. He can do whatever he wants with the puck.

I didn't ask you to, and he already does that.

That's why you move panarin to the bumper and slot laffy or kakko on the halfwall. You remove the overpassing from panarin and offer a shot option on that halfwall with a lefty.

We all know why it won't happen though with panarin's aversion to the slot area anymore.

He did it once. Not three times. All situations aren't the same. And it was a dumb play that shows a lack of confidence but not only a lack of confidence - poor coaching - because that is something that he should be told not to do and yet he does it anyway. The same as Trouba shooting on the PP. He shoots too much. It's been a problem forever. I don't blame him for it though. That's his playstyle. I blame the coaches. Either don't put him in the role or, you know, actually coach and tell him he is not allowed to take one timers/slap shots on the PP.

I really wish we had more insight into the coach/GM dynamic on this team. That was the most fascinating part of the Maple Leafs documentary on Amazon. Seeing the meetings between Dubas and Keefe to discuss roster moves, which players are getting in the lineup and which aren't, which players are getting waived etc. was fascinating and made me realize that, at least on that team, there is a lot more collaboration between GM and coach than I expected there to be. I would love to know what the Drury/Gallant back and forth is like. Does Drury ever talk to Gallant about what the long term plans are for Laf/Kakko? It's obvious that this 14 minutes per night and no PP time is not helping Laf get better. After watching that documentary that's the type of thing where I would expect Dubas and Keefe would sit down and have that conversation but I have no idea if Drury and Gallant operate in a similar manner.

Yup I really want to see him drive the net or otherwise try to force something to happen 1v1 in those situations.
