The one thing that bodes well for Laf is that he has seemingly carried over his knack for dramatics and scoring the big goal at important times.

The OTW for his first goal

The one timer for the GWG against Buffalo in an important late season game

A big third period goal against the Flyers to take a two goal lead.

The GWG in his first game in Montreal recently

He also buried two beauties against the Devils, they were in blowouts but I’ll throw them in here for personal reasons lol

He’s kinda dumpy lookin

not fast not big no shot not a hitter

Lol, lets be honest.

He's in great shape, a bull for his age (He's only 20 years old).
He's improved his skating and speed and it was noticeable the first day of camp.
He has a fantastic wrist shot, he just hasn't used it enough.
And he's literally been hitting everything in sight this season, almost to the point of taking himself out of the play.

Not sure what you are watching.

We'll see if he develops into what a true #1 OA should be but this is just a silly take.

Awesome the boo hoo Kravtsov crowd is completely shitting up or trolling this forum.
Tbh this place has been shit ever since the rebuild started and it’s only been exasperated by things like the Wilson incident and now the Kravstov incident.

It’s a shame really since I used to love conversing with people here. It’s still the best place on the internet to talk hockey so I likely wouldn’t go anywhere else, but the quality has dropped to main board tier in the past few years.

Barely any room for intellectual hockey talk anymore. Just trolling and whining constantly.

The thing is his size and strength were an advantage in junior but are not above average at this level. His effectiveness in front of the net would depend entirely on how hard he wants to battle. He has the hands for it, but I don’t think net front is his spot. It would be more interesting to see him set up in that Ovechkin style role as mentioned in the scouting report. That’s much more within his style; kind of lazily “disappear” in the offensive zone only to find a soft spot to open up for a one timer. Right now our PP is woefully predictable trying to get Zibby the one timer low in the circle. Set Laf up a bit higher on the other side. Panarin (high) and Zib (low) options to the left, Laf to the right, Fox QBing with multiple options, and Kreider net front.
Especially in his rookie season in the Q he played more like Ovechkin but throughout his Q career he transformed from sniper to playmaker. It seems in the NHL he is going back to being more of a sniper, which is good because that’s what our team needs more. He does remind me quite a bit of Ovi, similar personality, hitting like a wrecking ball out there, lazy on backchecks and often waits for the game to come to him lol. Ovi was faster though and Laf doesn’t take too many one timers or slap shots. I’d like him to work on his skating a lot as well as his one timer, we need a big left handed shot on the right circle. He has an elite wrist shot so it shouldn’t be tough for him to develop a slapshot. I remember Elias Pettersson saying he practically never took slapshots before and just practised them the summer before his rookie season and now his shots over 100mph

Totally agree re the PP

He started in junior by being a phenomenal goal scorer. Something like 42 in 60 games as a 16 year old. Something noticeable about his development in the Q is how he added the playmaking after establishing himself as a shooter. If you watch his junior highlights, so much of what he's able to do and the space he creates for himself is obviously linked to the threat of his shot. He makes a ton of fake shot-passes, and even his net drives, he sells entire teams on the idea that he's going to score before sending a pass to someone everybody else stopped paying attention to.

As a young pro, he can't bully people with his size the same way he could in junior. And teams have the book on our team as a whole--just cover the cross ice pass and we're toast. For Lafreniere to win himself the time and space necessary for him to dominate, he needs to find a way to intimidate teams and keep them guessing. For me, that begins with his shot and with having the mindset to be a goal scorer on this team.

Kakko has had to make similar adjustments. Some of it too, comes with developing some patience. In juniors, a player of their caliber can realistically get on the ice every or any given shift and just take over, basically have the puck the whole time. In the pros, you're not going to be that much better than the opponent, and their are guys at this level who are being paid millions to exclusively make it hard for you to have the puck and score--not even trying to do anything themselves. Lafreniere to my eyes doesn't yet understand that he has to play the shift in front of him.

I don't give a damn about the goal. I got cised for the stickhandling and shot he made shortly before the goal. Probably the most dynamic play of his career. Wasn't a high bar.

He's making a lot of good quick plays with the puck but I'd like to see him figure out how to attack more with it

Two biggest things for me are 1) he doesn’t get engaged. Both when it comes to his skill and the fact that he’s lazy. And 2) his processing speed isn’t as good as I thought it would be. He has to get used to the NHL pace, and I think (hope?) he will. In juniors his IQ was great but the NHL is a different animal. He has his moments but they are few and far between. And he’s so young still. But if that doesn’t happen, he really has to improve his skating. His wrist shot is great, but again he doesn’t get engaged enough. I want to see it more often. I’m not worried too much, but I’m not crazy optimistic. I see a 1st liner ceiling. Nothing more. I really hope I’m wrong but him becoming a superstar seems like a mountain to climb.

I think Kakko becomes a better player at the end of the day, but we’ll see.

The kid is young. He finishes in the places he should. We all wish he was driving play more but the matter of the fact is not too many players do that at 20 years old.

most that put up gaudy numbers at that age are riding shotgun to another star in the league or are the main option on the PP. Laf is understandably, not that. He seems more comfortable with the kids and defers too much to Zib/Panarin when he plays with them. Would love for them to tell him to rip the puck every chance he gets.

this is going to be a fun bump in a few months.

Part of this could simply be he defers too much to older players. Most 1OA’s come to a team where they’re immediately the best player on the ice, and defer to no one. Laf came to a team where he was maybe the 4th best player. So it might be easier to get into that selfish mindset with kids.

We're looking at around (50-60 ?) games played and opinions are everywhere. Geez guys let the process of acclimation take hold and the physical aspects of the game jell. There is alot of professionalism still to figure out at 20. I want to see something special by 23-24 years of age.
