He needed to solidify his spot this season with how the organization perceives Mailloux and Reinbacher. He did not take the necessary leap and they got some certainty on the blueline this year when they've needed it.

He had his window with the organization and it closed. I don't discount the possibility he could still be a PP2, 3rd pair RD for the Predators long term. He was just gonna get passed over here in short order.
Sure, he could still figure it out. He never found that extra gear with us, his time had passed.

Put them neck and neck and it becomes obvious why Trotz could not resist reaching for Barron. :sarcasm:

Trotz should have used Head and Shoulders shampoo in his earlier years. Barron looks like someone who overdosed on it lol.

yes he did.
Barron is a AHL d man at best.

now what to do with Math?
The left side doesn't need Matheson, Guhle/Hutson/Xhekaj is a good left side despite how young it is.

The right side is still weak outside the vets and I expect one of Savard/Matheson to traded by the deadline. So conundrum...because Carrier can't carry the right side by himself next season...

I could somewhat deal with Matheson brain cramps but not if you added Barron’s. It’s already better for the time being.

We know Matheson will f*** up bad regularly but now it’s only one guy. The other Ds might make the odd bad decision but are not sloppy like Barron.

Barron was really bad. We needed a steady right handed D that isn’t another rookie. Trade makes sense, especially if Savard gets moved at the trade deadline.

Yep. It’s an no brainer. Ideally we trade Matheson + pick + prospect for an actual good top 4 pairing RHD.

On the right side in no particular order, depending on how Reinbacher looks after the injury and how Mailloux develops his defensive game this year in the AHL.

*Insert trade acquisition*
Carrier
Reinbacher
Mailloux

I believe that Hutson can take up alot of Matheson's minutes but I don't think the Habs are ready to move Matheson or Savard yet.
I think HuGo will sit patiently, because they can, and if they get a big offer for either guy, then they move one or both....................more than likely just Saavvy at this point.

I don't even think the Habs are going to look at a top 4 vets RHD now that they have Carrier. They might try to trade Matheson for a RHD prospect thought, because that side of the prospect pool is still kinda weak with the question marks on Reinbacher/Mailloux.

And we can also add Engstrom (even if LHD) and Konyushkov (if he buy back his last contract year) for possible RD canditates next season.

The best way to help young D learn is to surround them with good vets, Carrier helps immensely

We need to move on from both of them but it'll take a number #1 RD with experience and term to do so.

Nashville fan here. He's not going to net you a 1st, if he was going to we'd have done it by now.

He's a good no.5 defenseman who can play in the top 4 sporadically or more permanently when tied to a more stable partner.
Thanks. The problem for me is is that type of player worth close to 4 million per year?

We already have so many bad contracts as is and trying to get out of and now we are tying ourselves to another one

In today's NHL bottom pairing D vets are going for 3+ million per season.
