Watched the Gr8tness doc on ESPN+ since I missed it on TV earlier. Enjoyed it for what it was, though there really wasn't that much new information. Think it's one of the only times Gretzky's talked about the goal in Phoenix on-camera in terms of being the opposing coach. I was hoping for more in-depth talking from Matthews and/or Crosby, but they opted for just a couple of soundbites instead of an extended longform. I did find it quite amusing that for the Chicago hat-trick game to get to 800, despite it being an ESPN game, they used Walton's radio calls for all three goals.
The other problem I had with the documentary was that it slid into the same narrative pattern as all of them - individual success, no team success, Pittsburgh winning, learns to play defense, Caps win. I get it as a narrative device because it works so well, but just once I'd like them to analyze all 4 series as a whole, show how close the margins were, and admit that Crosby going 3-1 was just as much randomness as it was "the will to win". I'd also have liked more words from opposing goaltenders - Fleury had a soundbite, DiPietro talked for about 10 minutes with Buccigross in the overview end segment, but nothing from Price, Lundqvist, Luongo. Just have them watch a selection of Ovi goals they gave up and their memories of them.
