I still think 50 goals will be tough for him to hit again this season. If he does though, that takes him to 830 career goals.

He would then need 65 goals to hit 895 over the last 3 years of his contract. (23 goals a season)
He's over halfway there and the season is not quite halfway over. He's on pace for 54-55 goals. Can't take anything for granted, but it sure seems like he'll be able to hit 50 goals this year.

I've been hesitant to broach this topic. It's not trolling but a legitimate question. Would it not be better for Ovi to become an American citizen? Then all his fame, recognition and honors would not go to Russia? He's spent pretty much 1/2 his life in North America. His reputation, fame and wealth is all made in USA.

You're assuming he wants to distance himself from Russia.

He doesn't.

He makes a huge amount of money on Russian endorsements. His family and friends are all there. His wife's family is there. He spent his day with the Cup in Moscow. He's always been a very proud Russian. That said, his children are Americans. He seems poised to do what a lot of Russian NHLers do after their careers are over and keep one foot in each country. He has two homes.

I’ve said it before a bunch and I’ll say it again: cherish this. It’s entirely possible we never see another player score 800 goals in our lifetimes and almost certainly we will never see a player this good play for the Caps again. Getting a player of Ovechkin’s quality on your favorite team for two decades while he’s rewriting record books is the zenith of sports fandom, even if we’d hoped for more Stanley Cups. One day the 8-car will not be making this team must-see TV every game so enjoy it while we have it.

Ovechkin has 16 goals in his last 14 games. 21 goals in his last 23 games.

Would be insane if he hit 50 at the age of 37.

Last year he had 27 goals after 41 games and ended the season with 50.

This season he has 29 goals after 41 games.

Barring injury, we know he’s a lock for 40+, which would break the record for the most goals at the age of 37. The record is currently held by Johnny Bucyk.

True, but Ovi had a breakaway in that game when he was sitting on 49 and he shot the puck into the glass so he had his chance.
Good memory. I remember that breakaway. He had his chances to score the 50th. But it's somewhat poetic that he missed this mark by a single goal, but won the biggest hockey prize a few months later.
