Right now OV's at a 46g pace for this season
- started slow and inconsistent the 1st 15gms or so
- been pretty good the last 10+ and looking healthy and strong, just snakebit a bit (tho' the ENG's have been a nice + )
- hasn't gone on his annual tear yet (don't think this year will be a 20 in 20, but I do think he'll have a 14 or 15 in 20)

I think his slow start this year is just an older, wily veteran pacing himself for the long grind, he's been quicker and more engaged of late

Personally I don't think much on 894, that's just too far ahead...
The next couple weeks is going to be fully exciting for the 799/800/801/802 goals (esp. w/DET 4 games away)

Hope he gets at least 40 this year that'll get him to at least 820

Health and maintenance will be everything as this becomes a real grind over the next 2 1/2 to 3 seasons

now he's on pace for 52, hopefully they can help him reach 60 goals this year, it will bring his total to 840, it will lessen the burden for next year and the year after that. If the org is all in with it he could probably do another 60 next year and have a shot at 1000 goals the following 2 years with 50/each season.

It will also be a payback for all the years the league stole off him. I think he deserves the boost.

It was my sincere wish that Ovechkin hit 895 without being a burden on the team. A 42 year old who sucks at everything that they wheel out for power plays and ENGs and scores 20 goals a year.

At this pace he can do it before he turns 40, easily.

Ovi was interviewed recently (not sure where I saw it) but he said he doesn't want to be some 3rd liner getting 10 mins a night just to chase the record. So he clearly feels the same way most of us fans feel. I have complete confidence he will break the record with honor and then fly past it and pad his lead a fair bit. Would not surprise me at all to see him end up between 925 and 950 when he retires. Or that he could score 35+ in his 40 year old seasons.

OUR f***ING LEGEND!!!!

He's said for years that he doesn't want to keep playing past the point where he can play to the level he expects for himself. I totally respect that. But his ability to keep playing at that level is otherworldly.

Ovi is 5th in the NHL in goals after last night. The guys in front of him, in terms of age, are: 25, 25, 23, 27. The only other guys in the top 20 over the age of thirty are Sid (10th, 35) and Stamkos (13th, 32). He’s a mutant.

Related note: Sid is having an unreal year. 17+21 for 38 points in 29 games at age 35 is stupid. I know we hate the Penguins and Sid and all that but it’s beyond wild that Ovi and Sid smashed the expectations put on them and they’re still two of the most dominant players in the league 15+ years into their pro careers.

It's really astounding. I've been trying to think of another pair like that in the NHL. Gretz-Mess maybe... I dunno... the closest I can think is Bird-Magic in the NBA (though they didn't start the same year).

Ovechkin had better stats at age 36.
21+25 = 46 points in 29 games.

Caps owner says he won't rebuild the team while Ovi chases Gretzky's record. Wonder how Caps fans feel overall about this? Like, if they miss playoffs this year...and again next year potentially...will people be upset? Or is the record now the franchise's and fans top goal? (Ovi + owner say it isn't, but kinda hard to take at face value when they're structuring the team with that in focus...)

We’re fine with it for many reasons. They’ll probably retool a bit this summer and give themselves an extra chance to push for the playoffs one more time.

The team’s cap structure doesn’t allow for a rebuild. Lots of money tied up in NMC/NTC contracts until 2025-26. Ovechkin deserves to break the record in a Caps jersey, there will be lots of time to rebuild after that.

Ya all makes sense. I guess is there any regret regarding any of the contracts already on the books? Lotta guys 32-35 years old signed for multiple more seasons…
