Of course, but he has to get open to use it. Even at 36-37, he can still do this

Ovi was everywhere that game. Not sure everyone saw it due to the time difference. Joe B and Locker remarked that he was sitting in his Cup clinching spot during pre-game, and just had a gleam in his eye.

That would have been a hattie if Kuzy hadn’t stolen one behind Lehner earlier too. And this followed a sequence just a couple mins before where he got free on the left side, but tried to deke and messed it up (as he usually does on breakaways these days).

So, after that, to see him decide to wind up and rip the slapper, in 80’s fashion, was hilarious and exhilarating for number 50. I was like: just do that on any kind of breakaway from now on!

Interesting fact about OV:
last season he scored 50 goals, 40 assists and 90 points,
his career averages per 82 games:
780/1274*82=50 goals
630/1274*82=40 assists
1410/1274*82=90 points

He is going to be 37 in a month 🤯

There's something in his genetics, longevity and very few injuries. And at least as a younger man he could skate like 230+ pound guys arent supposed to whilst also being a perennial league leader in hits.

He's like a very rich (top 10 all time) mans mix of Phil Kessel and Tom Wilson minus the fighting plus the shot.

At least there was 2018.

He’s just a few weeks older than me. No idea how he keeps doing what he’s doing at this age. The aging curve hit me hard and I dropped down a skill division in beer league, too many recent college grads decked out in their college gear and I feel like an old man trying to keep up now

I feel this so much he’s a month younger than me and I think I’m not going to make it after 18 holes haha

Was looking at Selanne’s stats for his age 38-40 seasons.

Age 38 - 27 goals in 65 games (16 PP)
Age 39 - 27 goals in 54 games (14 PP)
Age 40 - 31 goals in 73 games (16 PP)

That’s a total of 85 goals with a goals per game pace of 0.44. (54% of his goals on the PP)

If Ovechkin hits 35 goals this season and matches the 85 goals of Selanne over the last 3 years of his contract then he finishes with an even 900 goals.

A breakdown in the amount of games it took Gretzky to get from goal #600 to #894:

Goal #600-700 (169 games)
Goal #700-800 (230 games)
Goal #801-894 (371 games)

As a comparison, Ovechkin got goal #700 in career game #1144.

Goal #600-700 (154 games)

Right now OV's at a 46g pace for this season
- started slow and inconsistent the 1st 15gms or so
- been pretty good the last 10+ and looking healthy and strong, just snakebit a bit (tho' the ENG's have been a nice + )
- hasn't gone on his annual tear yet (don't think this year will be a 20 in 20, but I do think he'll have a 14 or 15 in 20)

I think his slow start this year is just an older, wily veteran pacing himself for the long grind, he's been quicker and more engaged of late

Personally I don't think much on 894, that's just too far ahead...
The next couple weeks is going to be fully exciting for the 799/800/801/802 goals (esp. w/DET 4 games away)

Hope he gets at least 40 this year that'll get him to at least 820

Health and maintenance will be everything as this becomes a real grind over the next 2 1/2 to 3 seasons

I also think the injuries haven't helped either with continuity and making it easier for the opposition to focus on him more.

Just read the NHL article on Ovi getting 800 then passing Howe (which will both happen within a few weeks.)

Thinking about being one of three players ever to hit 800 goals. I mean 895 is the pinnacle, but he's already done (or about to do) something so remarkable its hard to comprehend. And unlike Wayne or Gordie, he's done it all for us. We're truly blessed to be witness to all this.

f***ing legend!!!!
