Yeah I agree its not likely, but three 55 goal seasons the next three years and he will have a head start of 50+ goals and if the league dont have many lockouts in the rest of his career some of the time he gets injured will equal a little against Ovi missing time because of covid lockouts.Matthews will miss too many games, and age will hit him harder than Ovi. Stamkos had a lot of the same buzz when he first came on the scene. Nothing against either of them and their superstar talents, but doing what Ovi is doing today absolutely requires his level of durability.
So it's not really a comparison of how many goals he and Ovi had by their age-25 season. It's how he'll age and the beating he'll take along the way. It's great that Matthews will get 60 the year he turns 25. But will he still be topping 50 the year he turns 37 like Ovi just did?
Matthews has the 50-goal thing down for sure. He's as elite a goal scorer as they come. But he'll have to maintain that pace every year for over a decade to come close. I don't see that happening.
After draft+6 seasons he will have more games than Ovi and very likely after 9 aswell because of the lockout shortened season in Ovi’s 9th season after draft year and with the high scoring in the league he have a good chance of being well ahead. The advantage is that Ovi still plays and while prime Ovi in his prime would Get 60-70 goals now I dont think Matthews would get close to 50 that often when he is 32+. But if Matthews are able to keep around 40 for awhile when he falls off he can be ahead of Ovi for quite awhile into their career by age.
He havent missed a lot of time the last 3 seasons either. Played the full season 2 years ago and lost 4 games last year. 7 so far this year, but without looking I would guess some might be covid protocol of those 11.
Still he looks more likely to miss 10-20 games a season quite often and if he gets a 40 game season here and there his hope to catch Ovi gets Low.
