This maybe sheds some light on the Frolik deal.

Frolik/Walsh, viewing the Jets as desperate to ice a solid top-9, asked for the big bucks.

Chevy knew/hoped that Burmistrov would return, and once he could depend on that, he'd have more ammunition in the trade negotiations. "Don't want to play as a Jet? Fine, Burmistrov will be happy to take your ice time."

In which case, maybe the 1 year deal was the best of all options. Don't sign an overpriced long-term deal. Don't lose Fro completely. Bide your time until you have the upper- (or at least less of a lower-) hand.

That's a thought. It could be that way. I hope you are right!

As an aside, with the Ice Bucket Challenge videos and the photo of Kane for Sportsnet in the rain forest here, it looks like being in shape won't be an issue.

Chevy mentioned last year that Kane because of his injury couldn't really work out but was being very diligent this year , well he is RIPPED and thick . Monster year would not surprise me at all.

You know what Branch Rickey said .:nod:

Could you mean;
"Never surrender opportunity for security."
or maybe;
"Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late."
no I bet you meant this one;
"Luck is the residue of design." :)

You intimated ( I believe ) that you think it is possible things "fell into place" with no credit to that happening to the GM . I counter that , you can decide if you want to position it any way you want . The end result is what matters imo and as I and several others have said , it is a long term approach and if we presume we sign/retain Frolik , we have a very very different big picture next season .

I choose to believe a very smart , intelligent overall , hockey astute GM positioned this scenario.

Sometimes luck works for you, sometimes against. A hockey GM will be judged by the results. If he is consistently lucky I'll credit him with being good and go away happy. "It's better to be lucky than to be good", "If you can't be good, be lucky" and "you've got to be good to be lucky". All old sayings that have an element of truth to them.

As is the quote I mentioned and alluded to.

IMO , this is by design , not that it always goes perfectly or an adjustment isn't required or that you don't react to a new situation. Big picture , clear direction , belief in the path you have embarked upon , as I mentioned , a couple of presumptions and next years outlook looks both good and different and encouraging, to me.

With a LOT of options.

If Chevy talked to Burmistrov and there was a sense that he was coming back, it would logically IMHO totally influence his decisions in terms of length of contract and type of contract that he would offer or not offer to any number of current players. The face of the Jets could radically change next year. Those on a one year contract need to take major steps to indicate that they want to be part of it. I think this really puts Chevy in the driver's seat as far as Frolik's contract goes. We were wondering why a major long-term contract didn't get done. I think we are quite a bit closer to the answer now. Those are the kind of "design" decisions that I think Chevy is consciously making.

If Chevy gets Burmi back full credit to him but I think you are crediting him with being too deep on this. Not that it couldn't be but first, nothing has happened yet and second, you are crediting Chevy with knowing something a month ago that just became public today. Certainly if he even suspected Burmi would be back next year it could have been a mitigating factor in his negotiation but lets see if anything actually happens before crediting him with something pretty speculative.

I just find extremes funny...

There are some that blame Chevy for everything that goes wrong and ignore the good. They say he is an AHL GM and such.

There are some also some that seem to have an excuse for all bad things as being outside of his control but extol all good things as part of his will.

:dunno:

Just one guys observation.

I agree.

There were ongoing talks , I highly highly doubt Chevy didn't/doesn't have a pretty good idea of what his options are for Burmistrov. As I mentioned , during the draft he addressed the situation and was clear that he was an asset for the Jets and nothing had changed except as to where he currently was playing.

I don't by any means think he planned this 2 year sabbatical ,that it was a preferred option , but he also handled it in a way that he didn't over react , didn't panic , didn't sell short , didn't over pay. He did what a smart and prudent GM would do , one that is confident in the direction he as chosen for his team.

That's how it looks from here right now. Just a matter of keeping the lines of communication open. Could the possibility of Burmi coming back have influenced the Frolik negotiation? That certainly is possible. It might have tempered any inclination to increase the offer. If that means losing Fro he is still an asset to be managed. In fairness to Chevy on that one, every team loses some good players to FA or there wouldn't be any to sign.

Telegin needs to play and then play well and want then to come back. Hopefully those all happen.

Yes. I'll be watching to see what he does in the KHL this year. Hope he has a very good season, for him as well as for us.

Or perhaps the most insightful, but oft-ignored of the Branch Rickey quotes:
"I'm hungry. I want a sandwich."

Think about it...

If Burmistrov were to come back we would could field an elite top 9

Maybe Ladd-Little-Scheifele
Buff-Perrault-Wheeler
Kane-Burmistrov-Frolik*

With Scott Kosmachuk and Nik Petan waiting in the wings, giving Chevy the chance to trade an asset for a void, maybe improving D and goaltending.

Rick Dudley drafted him to play with Kane, and Noel did try the first year of the Jets with Antropov, but when Jokinen replaced Antropov, Burmistrov was dropped down the depth chart (with or without reason is debatable). Having players we drafted such as him and Telegin only gives us more needed depth to be competitive...Like to see him come back, wear the #13 and start to mold his game like another Selke winning #13, with the charisma of the Finnish Flash.

Surprise surprise.

Follows exactly the type of person Burmistrov is. His dream was to play in the KHL for his home team AK Bars, and play in the NHL. He fulfilled one dream.

I've been saying all along that Alex would eventually come back and that it was about more than money. I just wish it was this year and not next.

Can't wait to see you in a Jets uni again Burmi, I wouldn't even mind if you wore 69 (though the NHL/ Jets would never allow it.) Maybe 88?

I said the same all the time and this is a pleasant but not very surprising statement from Burmi to me.

IMO there is no way you play Burmistrov at C over Scheifele , none .
