Dach isnt the Newhook comparable its Matheson.

Both are former Hughes clients that he's known since they were at least 15. Both were highly touted players struggling to meet their potential in the environment they were in.

Hughes got Matheson back on track to meet his potential. Hopefully he can do the same with Newhook.

You’re underestimating the influence MSL has had with our group. Newhook is an excellent talent, easily top 6. We would never have gotten #16 (Newhook) in 2019 for the 31st & 37th picks….never. People are going to be surprised how fast this kid is with the puck, he‘s a play driver with an impressive engine and Crosby’s build. As a side note he’s also a good young man….this is a solid add to our team.

I see him more as a winger than a centerman.

Let's try this next Camp.

Newhook-Suzuki-Caufield
Monahan-Dach-Anderson (Monahan can take faceoffs if needs be)
Slaf or RHP - Dvorak - Gally or RHP

Caufield went from a undersized potential bust with no goals to a total stud within a few weeks. Every highlight I watched post January, Matheson was a part of. Heck Dach looks like he’s always had two good arms!

In a year or two, this D, with this core will make ufa season really interesting as they should be financially viable with a fun, fast team. Newhook looks like he’ll fit right in. Habs don’t play zone and punish rookie mistakes anymore.

.... Entertaining... but gonna finish bottom 10 forever.

We are stuck with him now. Might as well see what he can do. Hopefully he turns into a Jan Bulis type of player. Dang Hugh for putting us in this position.

I posted this in the draft thread, but I thought I'd put it here to give Newhook a bit more love:

People put a little bit too much value on late first/early seconds because of unknown potential. Imagine we traded 31 and 37 to move up to 17 and drafted Oliver Moore (probably the player the most similar to Newhook in this draft). Most fans would be satisfied because they imagine Moore's potential as being greater than it is.

In actuality, Chicago would probably be happy if Moore is somewhere around where Newhook is today in 4 years. So yeah, Newhook makes much more sense than Moore for us today.

Not so long ago people were mad we picked Caufield over him because WJC

And now those same people are mad we acquired him.
Really? Felt that Caufield was the faller everyone was thrilled to get. Basically Collberg that ended up not sucking.

I'm still pissed only because he seems to be more of what we already have and the Habs aren't clearing space for him to play.

If you want anything for Hoffman, you need him to play and to me that's Newhook's spot.

He will surprise a lot of people. This guy don't have the potential of Kirby Dach, but he have solid top 6 potential, 50-60 pts per season, 20-25g. I can certainly see that in him. I'm big fan of his game.

Like @ginomini just said, it's like giving up 31 and 37 for the 17 and pick Oliver Moore, 100% agree with you. Newhook have certainly the talent to become a really really good top 6 and Habs would be lucky to grab that type of talent at 17th overall.

We will see how it goes. From an avs fan standpoint, they will be excited because they get a couple magic beans which probably feel like free ones given that Newhook wasn't really fitting in.

On the other hand, the probability of getting a solid top 6 player out of the 30 something draft range is very far from a guarantee too.

Ummm not so much.

The Dach and Newhook scenarios are almost the exact same M.O.

Hughes used draft picks as currency to acquire two centers who are former 1st round picks who have yet to break out and are the same age and are coming off of their respective ELC's. While not being 100% identical as they are not the exact same person, you can't get much closer than that. Both deals are also essentially draft day deals even though the Newhook deal was done the day before. This trade is almost a cookie cutter replica of the Dach trade. The Newhook deal is basically Dach lite 2.0

Matheson is a 10 year vet who was acquired for another high priced vet and a struggling prospect who is older and worse than both Newhook and Dach. Matheson was coming of a career year where he finally broke out and Newhook was coming off of a drop in production. The former agent connection is the only remote tie between the Matheson and Newhook trades. This wasn't an attempt to use draft capital as a means to expedite roster building by a few years. This was a deal that was forced upon the team by Petry and Hughes did a masterful job of maximizing his value. Hughes sought Dach and Newhook and then had to negotiate a price. He wasn't looking to pry Matheson from Pittsburgh and was forced to give up Petry and Poehling in order to do so. The Dach/Newhook deals were proactive and the Matheson deal was reactive.
