Hughes trades were great, the drafting, not has impressed.Ummm not so much.
The Dach and Newhook scenarios are almost the exact same M.O.
Hughes used draft picks as currency to acquire two centers who are former 1st round picks who have yet to break out and are the same age and are coming off of their respective ELC's. While not being 100% identical as they are not the exact same person, you can't get much closer than that. Both deals are also essentially draft day deals even though the Newhook deal was done the day before. This trade is almost a cookie cutter replica of the Dach trade. The Newhook deal is basically Dach lite 2.0
Matheson is a 10 year vet who was acquired for another high priced vet and a struggling prospect who is older and worse than both Newhook and Dach. Matheson was coming of a career year where he finally broke out and Newhook was coming off of a drop in production. The former agent connection is the only remote tie between the Matheson and Newhook trades. This wasn't an attempt to use draft capital in an attempt to expedite roster building by a few years. This was a deal that was forced upon the team by Petry and Hughes did a masterful job of maximizing his value. Hughes sought Dach and Newhook and then had to negotiate a price. He wasn't looking to pry Matheson from Pittsburgh and was forced to give up Petry and Poehling in order to do so. The Dach/Newhook deals were proactive and the Matheson deal was reactive.
