I had Newhook 6th his draft year. Was miscast in Colorado, he’s a winger through and through. He’s a guy you want as a game breaker, not a guy you want worrying about defensive play. Put him on the wing and watch him flourish! Tremendous talent with a rare combo of skating, shooting, and playmaking. Not tall, but he’s got some decent strength as well. Big time upside similar to Dach last year.

Imo hugo just got back our younger version Lehkonen with much higher upside on offence.
How anyone in here could be upset with this bc of 2 flippant 30s picks that might be "at best" as talented as Newhook and still 4 years away from newhook today.

Beck now becomes a very shiny prospect in any trade hugo might like.

Again, a breath of fresh air to have a real builder as our braintrust.

Lets be honest here,...the pick at 31....the top scoring players drafted at 31
Big GEORGE LARAQUE...153 career pts....and Tyler Pitlick career points 87.
...so what did we give up here? You got to go all the way back yo
1974 to find a player drafted at 31 Dave TIGER Williams with over
500 career pts.
What? Really? Come on! Seriously?

That's wild! If what you're telling me is true, maybe Logan Mailloux will become the best #31 pick in the history of the NHL. :thumbu:

Out of curiosity for those that think this is another Dach situation, would you be happy if we gave him a Dach like contract 4 years @ 3.4m?

Yes. Newhook is 22, 30pts playing with plugs and no pp time. Not saying he will be the second coming but I expect 20-25 goals and 45-50 pts if he plays in our top 6. And that at that contract is very reasonable .

The issue is thinking the Habs are missing out on Aho / Robertson by trading pick 31

Wonder why no one ever just trade pick with such a poor record like 31st for a pick with better history of yielding a NHL player like pick 35th, 44th, 45th or 49th…

Not ecstatic but I think the key part is cap management in order to have a meaningful window where your young players start to produce but before everyone’s cap hit explode.
PLD might have made sense as a UFA but not at that salary + roster players cost

Newhook is a solid roster addition and I think he has lots of room to grow as a player, but I think think the acquisition cost was too high IMO. 31 + another asset sure, but including 37 was too step.

I understand people saying historically those picks don't have much chance to play, but in this draft, I think there's some solid talent available at those spots. The other thing that is a little disappointing is Newhook is likely a winger, which we already have too many of. I guess there's still lots of time for other trades etc. before the season starts.

Hoffman, Armia and Gallagher have no long term future with the team. Drouin and Byron are gone already. Heinemen and Farrell need to prove they belong. Other prospects are still just hopefuls.

Prefer this choice over the Dubois scenario, but now to see what subsequent moves are done.

I think the lesson is historically fallers fall for a reason and teams that finish last in the league usually have incompetent management and personel including their scouting staff. Since the 31st pick was the first of the second round for quite a long time.

Many years ago I compiled 10 drafts and figured out that 1 in 10 2nd round picks ended up being top players ,top 6F, top4D, starter G. So about 3 a year. I didn't scale based on when in tje 3nd a? guy was taken in the 2nd.

Let's say 31 and 37 combined have a 25-40% chance of a top player, do you think Newhooks odds are better or worse if becoming a top 6F ?‐

I'm happy with the Newhook trade. He's an unexpensive gamble. He's versatile, fast and has a good shot. And under MSL and Nicholas, no doubt the kid is going to develop. He'll be a top 9 on a team like Montreal. Hugues did exactly what he said: if there was opportunity to acquire a proven prospect vs draft pics, he'd go for it. That was/is the plan and they stick to it. Bravo!

This said, I'm expecting/hoping for another move that will at least give us another pic in the 1st 2 rds.

Boldy is only 10 lb heavier than him. At 190 lb he should be strong enough to win board battles.

I think Newhook and Dach's games have the potential to really compliment eachother. Dach's puck carrying and vision coupled with Newhook's quick release and ability to burn/find open space could be a great start.

Now ... Who to plug in to their RW?
Gallagher or Hoffman? No thanks
Armia? I'd rather not
Anderson or Evans? I could get on board, especially if we don't trade Dvorak. But we also need a RW for CC+Suz
RHP or Gurianov? RHP could work, do we think Gurianov re-signs with mtl?

I could see an all speed line of Newhook-Dach-Anderson working quite well together. We can have a slower, more heavy cycle oriented line of Slaf-Monahan-Gallagher, a high energy line with RHP and Pezz. Lots of options right now.

I have 1 question....we keep saying how we love to have analytics with us now. We actually have 3 people working on this.

So.....what are Newhook's analytics?

I remembered after CC 1st year in Montreal, many people regretted we did not have picked Newhook instead. And now we have him and people keep complainning. I would try Farell Newhook Heinsman line or Even Newhook Heinsman

Then again due to the situation of Mailloux, he was seen more of a mid 1st than 31st. But yeah probable
