Debatable. We also don't know if there was anything else available for those picks out there.

In 4 years Newhook will still only be 26 and likely in his prime.
Absolutely it’s up for debate, wouldn’t be much fun if we all agreed on everything.

Right now, he’s a career high 33 point winger, forced to play Center because we don’t have depth. He doesn’t seem to have a lot of vision or playmaking abilities, but perhaps I’m missing something you’re seeing. Seems pretty average. Good skater, but doesn’t use his speed as an offensive weapon nearly enough to be a consistent threat. Decent hands around the net, below average defensively, and not very physical.

I don’t see how that translates into anything other than an average NHL player, and I don’t seem him improving any of the negatives (or positives) enough to change that analysis but time will tell.

It's not that useful to be fast when you take forever to reach top speed. Newhook lacks explosiveness and the ability to separate himself when he has the puck.

For every home run you'll usually strike out 3 times, anyone expecting another home run so quick wasn't realistic. It's not that easy
Dach is special, too. It’s rare a team gets this level of talent in a trade especially when they’re 20-21 years old.

I think he brings nice speed and he will have a career but on a middle six role in my opinion. Dont think we should expect more.

He has a nice shot tho. ~20g and ~45points is what i would expect with him.

Reinbacher is a potential star too my dear then.

I would be glad we would have drafted Benson or Michkov but we would have another problem with our RD. We had this many holes.
Yeah, I would hope we can get a Michkov/Benson level prospect in the next draft. And if we're going to add a small player, I would want the small player to have that offensive upside, which I see as higher than Newhook's.

He's still not bad. 50pts definitely possible with a good center like Dach.

That's enough value to trade/package him later on for something better

I don't think the Newhook trade was a good one, but given how bad we are at drafting, it's also a losing situation if we keep the picks 😅
Honestly, I agree seeing how the picks usually end up. Odds anyone Habs draft being better then Newhook is pretty low.

Newhook is heading for 41 pts or a 35% improvement vs last season. Cannot expect more in real world.

This is a great post.

No, he's not got what Dach has but few do.. but if Newhook hits around 40 this year.. then we know with more development, better line mates, not being at center.. that we can see him sit around the 50-60 pt mark, which would be about what you'd hope as a reasonable outcome.. and if he can get the range to the 70s, then you are absolutely loving the move.

Even if he doesn’t reach it, I like the trade. It’s a real good try.

I think he will reach it though.

He would be the first straight line skater in league to hit 50 pts. Anderson learns the basics of puck handling and passing before Newhook hits 70 pts. Which means it will never happen.

Yeah I may have vastly over rated this player. I always seem to think everyone we acquire will be a home run. Why can't this organization ever find a John LeClair type of player...someone with modest numbers who immediately turns into a 50 goal scorer?

In terms of comparables, I'm hoping Slaf's comparable is John Leclair and he turns into our John Leclair that we keep.

Note that John Leclair had his first decent season (19 goals, 44 points) at the age of 23. And it was only at the age of 25 that he first broke the 20 goal mark - the year he got out of Montreal, and more importantly played with a center of the quality of prime Lindros. And he scored 25 in 37 games that first year with Lindros.

I'm definitely hoping Slaf and Newhook get good centers to play with over the next few years. (not Dvo). Healthy Suzuki-Dach-Monahan down the middle would be really nice for all our young wingers (Caufield, Slaf, Newhook, Roy, RHP, Ylonen, Heineman, and hopefully at least one more to come).

Just to further pump LeClair's tires, it was cool how he got his 2nd and 3rd 50-goal seasons in 1996-1997 and 1997-1998, which was of course the dawn of the you know what era. Lindros also missed about 55 games combined over those 2 years. You wonder how much more damage LeClair could have done with a healthier Big E in a league that was still more wide open. 60 goals? 65? He had such deceptively quick hands around the net for a guy that lumbered around the ice. Loved watching that guy in his heyday, and buying his $19.99 LeClair Sherwoods lol

It's hard to find a comparable for slaf right now because it looks like he's still trying to find his identity.

He looked most effective to me early last year with his bull in a China shop mentality. I don't know if someone is trying to mould him a different way, but he certainly doesn't seem to play the same as we saw back then.

Its come out more in these last 3 games playing away from Anderson.

He lost weight in the offseason. Nit sure if that's part of the reason.

Right now he's just a step above Ylonen. Neither player is winning any battles along the boards.

What did we give for this guy? Bring something apart from speed dude!

We have up picks that have a slim chance at becoming NHL regulars...

He's on pace for career best goals, points & sh%. If you expected an elite top 6 player out the gate, your expectations were likely misplaced.

He's inconsistent as he adapts to the bigger role, new coach/system/teammates, not very surprised.

If he stays on track for a 40+ pt season, I'd say it's a pretty good year 1
