If they both pan out these trade will be regarded as absolute steals, even league wide.

It's a bit early to tell, but I don't remember us getting such high quality young players in trades at any point in the past.
Closest is probably Damphousse who was 24 when we acquired him i think. That said he already had 6 seasons under his belt as he played right after being drafted. at 18. he was also established coming off a 38 G season

In the medium term it'll be ideal if Monty can develop into a good 1B option and then Habs could sign or trade for someone who could be a 1A and hope that one of our drafted goalies can develop into a legit starter.

Barring a overpayment, I think it's hard to acquire a young elite goalie and any elite goalie who makes it to free agency will get overpaid.
After our continuing experience with the albatross known as Gallagher around our neck, I would think (hope) most Montreal fans would be very wary of overpaying for any player. But maybe not.

It'll be a challenge because there aren't many of them.

I see Nashville as a potential suitor. Either Askarov or Saros could be available in the mid term future.

Then there's Kochetkov in Carolina, but I think they still see him as the future.

The bruins could go on a re-tool/rebuild and could monetize one of their two goalies as well.

There aren't many goalies around who can truly be a #1. So we might very well be in a situation where Montembeault has a bigger role than expected in the mid/long term, preferably as a 1B.
Outside of Askarov I don’t really know these guys. But I vaguely remember when Nashville picked Askarov people were saying they were loaded with goalie prospects.

I’d almost overpay for one just because I believe in the rest of the roster but it depends on how Dobes looks. I saw little of him but he was big and moved really well. He stood out immediately.

Even if he needs 3 years in the AHL it wouldn’t be the end of the world. That works fairly well with the window. That is if he can be that #1.

Too bad Price is missing all this. He’d do some serious damage with our likely roster in a few years

Dobes could be something. He's big which is great, but he's also very athletic and plays like he has a fire up his ass. Love all of that.

Askarov is my guy. We can still make it happen, could've done it last draft too.

I think what Chris MacFarland did in Colorado, trading Newhook for a 1st and 2nd and then trading the 2nd for Ross Colton, was a genius GM move. Colorado is a contending team with no time to wait for someone to develop. Colton is only 27 but he is a stable middle six centre who could end up more.

When I think of steals I think of where the other side gets nothing. Kent Hughes is developing a reputation around the league as a fair negotiator and it'll get more and more teams to make trades with him. Alex Newhook might end up a superstar in Montreal on an amazing contract and I still don't feel like Colorado were victims of a theft. They got good value for a guy who didn't fit their team anymore and were able to turn it into an asset they needed now.

As for Montreal getting young quality players in trade, the mid 90s. They got Vincent Damphousse, Kirk Muller, and Pierre Turgeon all when they were only 25. Newhook and Dach are younger than that, so hey, kudos to Kent.

I think "Genius" is a very strong word. Colton is a run of the mill, solid, #3C, who at 27, is what he is at this point in his career. I don't think we stole anything or it was a massive theft on our part, it was just a solid transaction that has potential to pay off for our franchise. I understand the move for both teams.

I haven’t seen Newhook play much games this past years before the trade except for some in the WJC and in the PO with the Avs so I don‘t know much about his past, but, from what I’ve seen in the pre-season and the first game, I’m really high on the guy. Like 55+ points this season and a 30 goals 70-80 points potential in a not so distant future. I feel like he has it all, skating, playmaking, hustle, shot, not too small, intangibles. I see a first liner personally and a good one

People who have followed him more, what are your expectations/forecast for Newhook this season and in the next few years? Am I being too bullish on our Newfie?

I follow him since his draft year, I'm a big believer on this guy. He have great speed, great shot, great passing ability, great hands, great two-way game, great hockey IQ aswell. I have him in my top 10 in 2019 draft, he have great stats in NCAA aswell. This guy can become a really solid player.

Realistic projection for him will be in the 60 points range as a top 6 player, but the potential of being a 70-80 type of player, is certainly there, for sure. He have high offensive talent, that's for sure.

Price will play in the playoffs once this team makes it. Trust me.

Well.... we traded a first and a second for a solid #3C in Dvorak...

So far, Newhook has been very good with the Habs. Hope, he can stay away from injury.
