It's much easier to develop skilled fwds when you have two highly skilled top 6 Cs.

The habs are in business.

Just need to find an NHL goalie and figure out in-zone defense. But that's for next year.
I’m honestly thinking that if they make a big move, it’ll be for a young-ish goalie first and foremost. One that fits the window contract wise.

I doubt they’re going to sit and wait for Dobes and/or Fowler. It’s the most glaring hole obviously

It’s a tricky subject because it’s hard to be sure that a young goalie will be worth the asking price.

Also having a mediocre goalie is a way to let your D & forwards develop and improve while still getting top 10 picks so the goalie should be one of the last pieces to adress imo.

Absolutely. I agree with @Heel Bayless that they’ll wait till next year to address that issue.

An appealing scenario (to me and possibly management) this year would be great leaps from all the kids, we score a ton of goals and our goalies are right sieves and we can still squeeze out one more high pick for the rebuild.

I was a huge fan of Newhook's at BC, nice to see him have a good debut. As long as he plays well against everyone but the Bruins, I'll be happy

Watching him in Colorado, it always felt like he never looked comfortable to just let it all go and play his game. He looked like he was playing tenative there and his speed/skill didn't come through. If St Louis can unlock him, and it certainly looks like he's letting him play his game, the sky is the limit with him

They need to run with Montembault as #1. If he is as bad as Allen but the team look like a playoff contender otherwise then look at trade pssibilities.

Speed aside, what else I like from Newhook is the ability to make plays in tight space. He doesn't seem to need a lot of ice to make a play or put the puck on net. That's going to be important if he wants to be a permanent top 6 player.

The more you watch him you’ll notice that he has a gritty confidence, he’ll get his nose dirty going into all areas of the ice. IMHO, He’s got the hands and tenacity to pot 35.
Let’s go Habs go!

It'll be a challenge because there aren't many of them.

I see Nashville as a potential suitor. Either Askarov or Saros could be available in the mid term future.

Then there's Kochetkov in Carolina, but I think they still see him as the future.

The bruins could go on a re-tool/rebuild and could monetize one of their two goalies as well.

There aren't many goalies around who can truly be a #1. So we might very well be in a situation where Montembeault has a bigger role than expected in the mid/long term, preferably as a 1B.

In the medium term it'll be ideal if Monty can develop into a good 1B option and then Habs could sign or trade for someone who could be a 1A and hope that one of our drafted goalies can develop into a legit starter.

Barring a overpayment, I think it's hard to acquire a young elite goalie and any elite goalie who makes it to free agency will get overpaid.
