I don't think Chicago moved Dach because he didn't fit their plan, disliked him or didn't see his potential. They could've just valued the picks more.
I think they, like Colorado, were simply trying to recoup value on what they saw as depreciating assets.

Colorado has seen all they need to see from a 21 year old player, just like we all knew that MacKinnon was just a 53 point player at that point in his career, and that's all he ever would become.

I would say it's a fair debate whether Dach has arrived as a center. He certainly played at a level at the end of the season he's never played at, including the beginning of the season, before he found his game playing on the wing with Suzuki and Caufiled.

But he looked damn good at C. So I'm very optimistic about the future. And to me he's certainly reached the level of a top 6 forward (whether wing or C).
Sample size is too low though. He showed us the prototype but he'll have to deliver the final product this year until then i would not anoint him a 2nd line center.

Would you take Habs fans' opinion of Drouin with a grain of salt too? ;)

You can still taste the salt from Hawks fans when they talk about Dach. They're still in the denial phase. Hopefully, this happens with Newhook too.

I mentioned to another poster who's active in the draft threads that if someone told me we got out of the 2019 draft with Dach, Newhook and Caufield, I'd have said the rebuild was nearing completion. They're very, very talented players.

I'm not going to be a cheerleader for management, as they haven't proven themselves yet, but having these three, Suzuki, Slaf and the youth in defense is really making me look forward to watching the team. They should at least be fun to watch.

Freeing him from babysitting duty with Slaf should help him, he needs the best we can give him although I think he is going to be saddled with Hoffman instead of RHP.

In which context? As a player he is pretty clearly a no defense top six or bust player. Our fans perception of him definitely contributed to his mental failure whether you believe he's weak-minded or not. I don't think anyone believes he won't do better in Colorado than he did here. He'll be playing with a hundred point guy in a no pressure market and be on the PP with guys who can think as fast or faster than him.

I think the difference here is theres clear data that Newhook never got an extended look with top six linemates. Every time he was tried in the Avs top six it was due to injuries and with different linemates. I think it's pretty apparent after a hundred and something years of hockey that chemistry is pretty important and takes time to build.

Even just looking at Dach to start last season he didn't fit in well on the top six. It was after a lot of familiarity that he became great with Suzuki and Caufield and then moved to his own line and continued that momentum he'd built.

I won't write off Newhook before he's even played a minute for the team but he definitely needs to show something before December

It’s always sobering to read the comments of a fan who has watched him as regularly as you have. I won’t dismiss your comments outright even if several posters in our fanbase are knowledgeable and made several compelling points — just curious as to how much more there is under the hood.

The rest is about how effective his new environment might be in bringing out those attributes and they’ve shown they can get the best out of a young player. Hopefully happens with Newhook too.
I think Newhook is the kind of player you find in the top-6 of bottom dwellers where "someone has to score the goals" but you don't want him there on a championship team and he's not built for the bottom-6.

Well, the Avs clearly didn’t want him in their bottom 6 but at only 22, there is still a lot of development time ahead from a team that’s rebuilding. Perfect situation to see what he’s got.

Top six forward, even if winger?

Sigh. I keep rewatching the 2021 run... SIGH.
You need something to give you back a good feeling.

How long before your next trip to the Dominican? Spoke to a guy who came back from there 2 weeks ago and loved it. Stayed 10 days, bought a Sunwing package, all inclusive $3000 for 2 people. He used $50 US in $1 for tips.

Precisely.

I'm certain many here could not have predicted that Lehkonen would go from a 30 point (to 40 point pace in his final season with the habs) to a 55 point player.

Context matters. Role matters.

It's clear that both Sakic and Hughes recognize that Newhooks needs seasoning and development. The former doesn't have the capacity to offer that, the latter does.
Shocking how often this seems to be ignored. Some people expect a guy play on the 3rd line to put up 60pts, that's not realistic and if it were, they wouldn't get traded.

The Newhook trade is a risk, much like the Dach or Barron trade was to a lesser extent.

But it's probably less of risk then just hoping you would have picked at 31 and 37 to eventually pan out.
