His skating and his shot are what impresses me the most with Newhook.... I see him becoming a goal scoring winger on our 2nd line... but if neither Dach or Newhook become top 6 centers and both play wing, a top 6 center (whether it's a 1 or 2) could be a piece we still need once Monahan is gone... Dach needs to improve his face-off skills before we can commit to him down the middle - Monahan can cover for it this year.

Waste of picks for Newhook. He brings nothing to the table and is small. Really hate this trade. What was the point other than a loyalty trade from a former agent?
what???
Newhook is an excellent skater, he has a fantastic shot, he plays a good 200 foot game, and you can call him small because he's 5'11" but he's nearly 200 lbs and is solid AF I have a feeling you will be surprised with what Newhook can bring to the table for us... it also seems like you've never seen him play

Basically, a bottom 6 role. He will also get better linemates as I’m certain, Hughes will want all the stops pulled so it reflects positively on the price paid to get him.
Yes, Hughes will want Newhook given every chance to succeed. He will want to be sure that Molson doesn't chicken out and fire him before the job is done.

I have a negative opinion of him BECAUSE i watched him play last season. Watched at least 30 Avs games last season (regional) and thought he was another Tyson Jost. Clearly you have just watched highlights and have no context on Newhook. He ended up on the 4th line in the playoffs because he brought nothing to the table. A complete disappointment.

Now, i am hoping a fresh start under the tutelage of MSL will turn him around. But not holding my breath.

so your only viewing of him was on the Avs?
no wonder you think this way...
Avs misused him, couldn't afford mistakes so he couldn't play his creative game, and he was expected to drive the lines with lesser players in the bottom 6 (which is not his game - he needs open space to use his shot)
This will go down as a very good trade for Hughes when it's said and done - Avs even traded one of the picks for a vet 4th liner and drafted an undersized Russian LHD with the other almost guaranteeing we win this trade when all the dust settles

No one cares
Not that it really matters, and I don’t know him personally but quite a few friends grew up with him or have played with his dad. From what I remember his family are Habs fans.

Just adding context as from what I know of the kid, I’d imagine he’s pretty happy to play for Montreal.

Also, while you’re right about the majority of people in NL(and who they’re fans of), there’s lot of other fans of other teams, especially among younger people.
I'm from the Rock and that's what I saw growing up there but granted, I am as old as a rock and things might have changed somewhat but the big three teams are still the favs back home. If his family were indeed Habs fans it will be the thrill of a lifetime for the kid to be a hab and he will give it all he has to succeed here.

Yes, my only viewing of him has been his last 3 years with the Avs. What are you basing your homeristic optimism on? His play during peewee?

I didn't think Cole would fall to us that year - I did extensive research on him his draft year - I wanted us to pick him until Caufield fell in our lap...
Again, the Avs misused him... but the Avs thought enough of him that they believed Newhook would replace Kadri as their 2nd line center in just his 2nd year even if it didn't work out for them... but top contenders are in different situations than rebuilding teams - he will make young mistakes, but with us it won't cost him ice time or his role like it did in Colorado...
And when viewing him on the Avs - did you watch him? Cause you seem more down on his production (which was due to his role) than anything about his actual game

1. Your opinion on Cole Caufield is irrelevant.
2. Did i watch him? What kind of stupid question is that? No, i closed my eyes every time he was on the ice...
3. He was given opportunities on the Avs. Was given linemates to work with. He didn't create offense as expected. He turned into a checking winger by the end of the year.

The only thing i agree with is that he should be given top-6 opportunities on the Habs this season. But given his lack of progression in his offensive game, i am not holding my breath of a Dach-like breakout season. He doesn't drive offense and lacks vision. But he is very skilled.

Might top out as a 3rd line winger in my view on the Habs.

we will need to agree to disagree...
Newhook was never ment to drive his line like the Axs expected... he needs someone else to drive the line so he can find open space and take advantage of his shot.
The way I see it, young Newhook is still extremely raw but has all the tools to be successful... he fits our young core not only in age and skillset, but also in character, personality, dedication, etc... in other words he will fit in with the locker room just as nicely as he fits in on the ice...
A young creative "player coach" like Marty should be great for him...
Working regularly with the best skating and skills coach out there (Adam Nicholas) should also be fantastic for him...
The difference between playing top 6 on a rebuilding team in our situation compared to trying to replace a key top 6 member of a Stanley Cup champion is too big not to see how much more set up for success Newhook will be with us. He tried too hard to do too much and was demoted out of the top 6 eight games in to the season... he wasn't given great opportunities at all and was afraid to make mistakes along with expected to drive his line when he did get them... it was a bad situation for a young developing player.

He WAS not given good linemates. For the most part he played with mediocre 3rd liners. The plan might have been for him to replace Kadri but Bednar was never going to do that. he would go with plugs like Compher.

fully agree...
8 games in he was demoted from the top 6... after that the only time he got any top 6 minutes were due to injuries...
his average ice time and his role were not suited to his skill set but the situation was a tougher one since it was a defending championship team he was trying to develop on...

Even the ones that don't see how good of a trade this was for the Habs (yet)... they must see how good of a trade it was for Alex.

Smellin like 4 years×3M imo, be just fine with that

Yeah there's no way he could possibly be looking at more than Dach.

Dach has both the better pedigree and position. He's a better player and prospect, this isn't a slight on Newhook, he just projects more as a winger than center imo.

Hopefully the two can compliment and elevate eachothers game to greater heights.

Dach was seen as a player not better than Jake Evans by some here because he was 21 and had a lack of supposed progression…

And how was Newhook supposed to score and get more than 30 points when playing 12-13 minutes a night with changing linemates constantly and when he wasn’t, he played with O’Connor and Cogliano.

Sounds like a lyric you lifted from an R&B song.

You might as well gone a little further …

His love, liftin' him higher
Than he’s ever been lifted before
So keep it up, quench his desire
And he’ll be at his side forevermore
