Jerry York, Newhook's coach at Boston College is on with Marinaro on The Sick Podcast and he says that he really likes this move for Montreal and that he believes Newhook will explode in Montreal. He says he's strong and strong as an ox. He says he's a terrific forechecker and also sees him more as a goal scorer than a playmaker because he has a nose for the net.
How many BU kids in our system now? To think that the Bruins are letting it happen from the sidelines.

What I like
-Newhook is skilled and still young
-maybe he didn’t have the line mate/ because was not block in the depth chart
-31/37 we might not even be NHLer

What I don’t like
-gamble on a player that doesn’t fill a need
Isn’t great on faceoff
Those not have ideal size C/W
-1st/2nd is high price for someone that hasn’t shown any sign of being, legit top 6
-Hasn’t performed in the playoffs
-Wasn’t stuck behind anyone in the depth chart in Colorado last season he had the opportunities…
-isn’t sign so no certainty that it good cap wise
-seem like knee jerk reaction to LA getting PLD or maybe Newhook was supposed to be flip to the Jets…
-making the move without knowing who might be available this could be Debrincat/ Girard all over again…

His daughter even convince him to go at his Stanley Cup party (wonder If his college teammates where there :sarcasm:) telling him they would win the Badard lottery
So Hughes had inside info on the guy, maybe nobody knew he had the legs of Saint-Louis.

So, I could gather Newhook is a Plan B of sorts (presuming Dubois is the Plan A).

If that were the case I think a couple of things are likely true:

The Habs we’re going to add a young forward.

They were willing to pay significant assets for a young forward (as evidenced by the trade of 31 and 37).

The Habs could have offered 31 and 37 to the Jets during Dubois discussions (it’s more of a speculative leap here, there could be many other things … I even entertained a brief thought were Newhook, Dubois and the Habs picks are part of a 3-team trade where Dubois goes to the Avs, who knows, doesn’t matter).

As many said , this shows Hugo new way of looking at the opportunities to add players (trades, draft, free agency) with advantages relative to their age/contract upside. If you accept that all of these decisions are relative to other options with receding degrees of likelihood of a. making a big impact, and b. making any impact at all (or worse making a negative impact); I think you have to like this better than a $9 million guy on his 3rd team in 4 years or whatever (and yeah I never bothered looking that up). So I like the decision in principle.

It’s the price though man…

PS- Newhook just got some eyes on him I’ll say that much. I bet all his social media and such will blow up. Welcome to the BIG show b’y! I hope he tears it up.

This post is amazing. The armchair scouts around here are almost never right but you're so mad you're reimagining history and living in your own crazy world.

A franchise talent at goaltender at 31 or 37, amazing. Goalies are a dart throw at best but this message board has got it figured out. Lololol ok buddy.
My prediction is that we will see a trade for a goalie tomorrow...

Well , the classic old coach that pumps one of his ex player .

Dom Ducharme also pumped Drouin back in the days

Not only do I have Roy ahead of Farrell, but also Owen Beck - the same Owen Beck that no one wanted to give up for PLD.
I have Roy as a career AHLer. He will never have the skating ability to play at a consistent level in the NHL. Beck already has NHL level skating.

Ok... So to recap, we add a player ready to step into the lineup right away with ~16-18th pick valuation for what appears to be reasonable trade value.

What's the problem/complaint then :dunno:
I was reacting to people talking as if picks aren't finally that important. That we don't have to hold to those. Yet, we were frantic all year long about this Florida pick and not because we wanted to pass it but because we wanted to choose from.

Just saying that 2 minutes before we got Newhook, we were picking 3 times. And we loved that 'cause we wanted to address quite a few different things. Now, we might have added an undersized 3rd C, while losing 2 picks and somehow, it's not important.

I will hope that Newhook has more than that in him. But I'm mostly saying that picks are important. No matter where they are. That maybe we could have made a deal 5 and 31 to move at 4 maybe. 'Cause we need elite talent.

In due time, we will need 2 things: A better mixture of players in size and skills. More elite talent. And centermen who actually can win faceoffs. Newhook still has some skills and could benefit from the opportunity.

Montreal must have big plans for Newhook they paid full blown retail for him. Hope Hughes wasn't bias towards him

Carter Hart isn't getting traded before we know the results of the criminal investigation by the London Police.

Trading a 5th overall pick for a goalie (any) would be a fire worthy offense. I would not trade a 5th overall pick for 24 years old Patrick Roy in the current context of the NHL. Flyers are not making this trade BTW as they move up only 2 spots while adding another good first round pick and the young goalie with the most potential.

You're probably the only one on the face of the earth with that opinion about Roy.

Got ya... Though you know as well as I do that consistency in takes is a rarity rather than the norm around here ;)

I think the gamble of 31 & 37 on Newhook is worth it. He's got elite tools & our GM knows him (personality, desire, dedication) about as well as anyone would...

If Michkov goes at 4 to a team that we could've outbid for with 5+31, then I suppose we could critique the timing (since presumably we could've made the Avs wait till we made the 5th pick before pulling trigger on this deal).

But outside of that specific context (BC I'm sold on Michkov being the best pure talent in the draft alongside Bedard) anyone we get at 5OA + Newhook is a good bet to give us as much or more talent to work with than 4OA + 37 imo.
