You're probably the only one on the face of the earth with that opinion about Roy.
An old curmudgeon like Chester is perfectly content being a contrarian. You could not have paid him a higher compliment. We'll see if he's right. I personally think that Roy is on a mission and will do what it takes to get to NHL level. With Nicholas and company doing the development, I could see him finding an extra gear over the next few years.

I have Roy as a career AHLer. He will never have the skating ability to play at a consistent level in the NHL. Beck already has NHL level skating.
I think Roy hockey IQ is high enough to compensate for a lack fo skating ability. Skating fast can only get you so far you need to position yourself at the right place at the right time. I remember when i was about 10 the faster guy in the league was also pretty average. I was an average skater and significantly slower and would double him in points cause he was about as sharp as a bowl of jello. The kind of guy to shot six time in a row on the same pad while the top of the net was open.

Yeah,

Keller is also 3 years older..

I like the move for a 22 year old but for a 25 year old, not so much.
Lol are you kidding? Everyone takes Keller 50 additional points for a 3 year gap, Newhook is unproven prospect while Keller is PPG elite on a great contract.

Newhook is dime a dozen amongst our prospect pool, there was no need for him. Sadly he is not elite and will not push us over the top. Instead it's just another meh undersize player fighting for a top 6 spot.

Dude,

You would need to give up a Suzuki, or Caufield, to get a Keller.

At that point... what is even the point?

It cost to get a talented guy, and he's already played 2 seasons, is 21. He's a perfect fit on line #3, and can slide up to the top six. I really like the trade, yeah we gave up a lot for him, but he's pretty good, and this is a trade that makes us better next year.

I would love to see him next to Monahan and Anderson.

Suzuki Caufield/Dach
Monahan Newhook/Anderson
Dvorak Slafovsky/ Farrell
Evans /Richard/Gallagher

There are tons of examples of high IQ players becoming top offensive players despite being poor skaters. This is not to suggest that Roy is a shoo-in to become a productive top 6 forward but he definitely looks the part. His hands, vision, instincts, puck control and shot are all very high end. There is no reason that Toffoli level expectations should be painted as unattainable or unreasonable.

Any other piece would have been available for Keller, including the 2 picks we just gave up. We have tons of ok assets so why not reach for something elite... Newhook brings nothing new to this team.

What I like
-Newhook is skilled and still young
-maybe he didn’t have the line mate/ because was not block in the depth chart
-31/37 we might not even be NHLer

What I don’t like
-gamble on a player that doesn’t fill a need
Isn’t great on faceoff
Those not have ideal size C/W
-1st/2nd is high price for someone that hasn’t shown any sign of being, legit top 6
-Hasn’t performed in the playoffs
-Wasn’t stuck behind anyone in the depth chart in Colorado last season he had the opportunities…
-isn’t sign so no certainty that it good cap wise
-seem like knee jerk reaction to LA getting PLD or maybe Newhook was supposed to be flip to the Jets…
-making the move without knowing who might be available this could be Debrincat/ Girard all over again…

I think the team just likes Newhook and they went for it.

My point is this....Yes, I do see the point in packing picks to get young talent. But I'm in consequent and keeps saying that draft is BPA while trade is needs....I do not see the need for another smallish player, pencilled to be a C, that can,t win faceoffs. If it's to move to the wings...okay. Sure. But he's not growing up.

Dach has become a better player 'cause he finally learned how to play with his size. What will Newhook be able to do that he wasn't? Playing more? With better linemates? That's pretty much the only thing we could die on. Hoping that the talent that was seen ONLY needed opportunity and linemate quality. Maybe it does work.

But if the whole thing ALSO means not going Michkov, or Benson or even Leonard because we just added a Newhook....I think this is a loss to be honest.
Yeah, really makes you think Reinbacher is likely going to be the pick. Which I'm okay with..... if we move back to recoup multiple picks this year.

I still think Benson is the BPA for us, but I'll live with Reinbacher.

Just how big of a shoe are we talking about for it to make it across? ;)

This is one of those rare instances where the spelling of a term has gone awry — you have gotten me used to a high standard of English when I read your posts. Must have been the result of a stubborn auto-correct feature. Nice to know it happens to us all. :)

I am confident that Hughes would trade both of those picks straight up for Michkov as well........unfortunately that is not an option.
I mean going for it with 5th overall.

Best scoring player to be drafted at 31st overall since 1974
Big George Larque....153 career points, Tyler Pitlick 87 career points.

Best scoring player to ever be drafted at 37....Mats Naslund 654 career
pts....since here got drafted in 1979, the best scoring players to be drafted
at 37.....Boone Jenner 284 career pts...Justin Faulk...333 pts..
and that's about it ....

AGAIN.....picks 31 and 37 what are they really worth?
I fail to see why 31 and 37 getting dumped is an issue.

The trade is Newhook 16th overall vs Fairbrother 77 th overall....you do that
trade 10 out of 10 times.

I have a feeling that after working with Gurianov, Marty is dying to work with anyone with hockey IQ.

They may be going away from size for a moment, because Marty is desperate for some IQ.

I don't think it as specific or as targeted as that. Newhook simply has many traits that the organization values and despite his lack of height is extremely strong for his size and wins more than his fair share of puck battles.

I mean going for it with 5th overall.

I am aware of your intended meaning, I was just illustrating what I considered to be an apples to oranges comparison .
