Stopped reading when you said KK id better than Newhook. That is ridiculous.
Kotkaniemi had 43 points in 82 games last year and developing quite nicely with the Hurricanes. He will flirt with 55-60 points as soon as next year imo. Newhook is no where close in his development curve. Things can change, but I don't see Newhook putting 60 points next year with the habs. If he does then it's a good trade, but for now it just looks like overpayment.

Was a little surprised at the price, would have preferred to not give up both those picks, but it's not the end of the world. We're overflowing with B level prospect depth.

I think people will be happier when they see Newhook, he's fast, skilled, and a bit of a bulldog. He might not be tall but he's stocky and won't back down. Players usually tend to take a step in their 3rd season and that's right where he is so it's worth the gamble.

Can you imagine how this board would have reacted back in 2019 if we ended up with all of Dach, Caufield, and Newhook? It would have been crazy, that's three guys that were ranked top 13 on Bob's list and could end up being 3 top 6 forwards. Maybe even two 1st liners (Dach and Caufield) and a 2nd liner (Newhook). All three acquired for:
2019 1st (15)
2022 3rd (66)
2023 2nd (37)
Romanov
Chiarot
Fairbrother

Not bad.

Maybe he's better suited as a winger where everything is simpler.

Gonna have little choice to maximize his value on the ice. He can do somethings okay at centre, yet you can tell even when he played with some of Colorado's better wingers, he was just not doing anything.

I dunno if putting others like Eller in the top six come playoff time was worth it. Wished Newhook did a bit more in general though. We'll see how this goes.

So in the deepest draft in a while you trade away a 1st and a 2nd because you have too many prospects? Roy and Beck are our top forward prospects, yeah sure. HuGo fans will buy this I don't, it smells.
Farrell? Kidney? Mesar didn't have a great year but he still has a ton of potential, Habs are loaded with prospects and picks.

I feel like I felt when we got Dach last year.
I think the price was a little to high, not sure about the player, not sure it was worth it.

Gorton has that ability to get player before they breakout.
Seems to have worked with Dach too but still early.

But I have hard time getting it.
- We already had too much forwards
- We already had too much of them on the smaller size

But now we know.....That's what Hughes had to call back Winnipeg, they wanted to flip Newhook for Dubois.

I love the move, I think he can be a 50 point guy next season if he sticks in the top 6.

And it's nice to have a fellow Newfie back on the Habs. Newhook, Allen and a 2nd could be our new Ryder, Halak and a 2nd😍

NHL stars like Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Jordan Kyrou, etc. were all 2nd round picks...
Newhook is going into his D+5 season. Kyrou broke out in his D+6, Robertson in his D+5, Hintz in his D+7, Aho was the only guy that was pretty much an instant success. No, I'm not saying he's going to have that kind of jump, but 3/4 of the guys you mentioned hadn't accomplished anything more than Newhook has by this stage in their careers either, and Newhook has already made it to the NHL unlike whichever prospects we may have picked at 31 and 37.

I dunno, if Newhook had 50 points this year he wouldn't be available. There's risk involved with every trade and every draft pick, at least this trade gives us certainty that those picks have produced an NHLer.

Lol thats a good comment from Avs board:

This is highway robbery unless we actually use these picks, in which case they’ll probably be even worse than Newhook

They want to now swap the picks for immediate help, make sense.
Looking up their draft history, the last time the Avs drafted a real good player after the top ten or so was Ryan O'Reilly in 2009. Would not be surprised if they flipped one or two of those picks.

This is a massive overpayment imo. Kotkaniemi was also younger than Newhook when the Habs gave up on him and some of the guys here are OK with this trade but wanted Kotkaniemi out asap ? I don't understand the double standard here... I would pick Kotkaniemi over Newhook any day of the week. This feels like a panic move. The habs had 3 picks in the top 40 and now only the 5th remains in a deep draft from what I understand. NHL stars like Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Jordan Kyrou, etc. were all 2nd round picks... By not having those picks, the organization give up on that potential home run. I wouldn't mind in another weaker year, but this year doesn't seems like the year to make that kind of Newhook move. This is sad... I was excited for that 2nd round this year :(
Agreed, except for the KK over Newhook bit.

P.S.: Are you the poster notorious for their liberal use of the :teach: emoji?

Irrelevant unless you take situations into consideration. KK was given his chance by Brind'Amour and got lots of playing time with good players. Newhook was playing for a coach who is trying to win and no prospect forwards develop under him - Jost, Compher etc.
