Can we settle on whether we've decided as a group if the 5OA pick is our ABSOLUTE LAST CHANCE for a franchise forward, or if this trade is too expensive because 31OA/37OA could be Jason Robertson?

It's funny how as a prospect, he was a speedy uber talented high IQ player that played with grit, and now Avs fans say he's not that quick (has a short stride), not skilled enough to be a top 6 forward, has low IQ, and loses every battle.
I’m not sure it’s funny, considering the price we paid to acquire him.

I have a very bad feeling that we just bought a lemon from “Crazy Vaclav’s Place of Automobiles.” Burnaby Joe must be a terrific snake oil salesman.

A 1st and a 2nd for a 3L player? That's a fail.
Not necessarily. If your top 6 is full of top 5 picks and player who should've been around top 5 (Suzuki and Caufield) then a third liner might seem better than initially thought. Dach was 3. Slaf was 1. Suzuki could've been around 5. Caufield should've been top 5. The pick this year will be 5. Maybe Habs just have a higher standard going forward for their top 6. It's all relative

My problem is that we didn’t need a player of the style of Newhook. A RD or a big forward for that price ? Yes ! An other small forward ? No thanks !
Hughes himself just said “he’s not tall but he’s heavy”.

We’re all about low center of gravity.

This is a massive overpayment imo. Kotkaniemi was also younger than Newhook when the Habs gave up on him and some of the guys here are OK with this trade but wanted Kotkaniemi out asap ? I don't understand the double standard here... I would pick Kotkaniemi over Newhook any day of the week. This feels like a panic move. The habs had 3 picks in the top 40 and now only the 5th remains in a deep draft from what I understand. NHL stars like Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Jordan Kyrou, etc. were all 2nd round picks... By not having those picks, the organization give up on that potential home run. I wouldn't mind in another weaker year, but this year doesn't seems like the year to make that kind of Newhook move. This is sad... I was excited for that 2nd round this year :(
Stopped reading when you said KK id better than Newhook. That is ridiculous.

Ouuch, not looking good for K. Hughes right now tbh

Hughes just talked about the possibility of trading down, if Michkov is still there at 5, could be listening tomorrow night for Gary's 'We have a trade to announce...'.

They will probably wait to see if one of the centers fall.
Exactly. They will probably trade down and end up with 2 1st round picks.

The Canadiens’ focus has clearly shifted

Montreal traded a good amount of draft capital to make this deal happen, which also demonstrates a clear shift in how they view where they are in the team-building process. The cupboard of prospects like the ones they could have acquired with the 31st or 37th picks is relatively full, so using those picks to bring in Newhook is a good reflection that the Canadiens believe their window to compete will be opening relatively soon. Perhaps not as soon as next season, but sooner than a typical timeline for a team holding the No. 5 pick in the draft would be. — Basu
How has it shifted in any meaningful way though?

As stated, it's Dach 2.0
We're targetting players still in the "prospect" stage with good draft pedigree hoping to unlock that potential.

Acquiring PLD would have been far more of a shift in paying significant assets and cap space for a more established player.

Don't see this trade as the rebuild ending one.

Finally the elite foward we've been looking for! Those 2 picks were worth a lot more than this guy, he's not changing anything to this team except take the place of another small foward. Great f***** day

Mike Johnson on 690 says it’s an overpay, thinks that 31st and 37th have currency and they should have gotten more than what Newhook has done so far.

Mike Johnson is not a huge fan of the deal.. says he should have peeked by now...
lmao it took Tage Thompson 4 NHL seasons before he broke out, Mackinnon had 38 pts in 64 games in his 2nd NHL season (ok i know he was younger), the next 2 seasons (3rd/4th year) Mack had 52 and 53 points.. and now he's 1 of the best forwards

Pastrnak was a .5 PPG player in his first 2 seasons, there's way more examples

Lol thats a good comment from Avs board:

This is highway robbery unless we actually use these picks, in which case they’ll probably be even worse than Newhook

They want to now swap the picks for immediate help, make sense.

So in the deepest draft in a while you trade away a 1st and a 2nd because you have too many prospects? Roy and Beck are our top forward prospects, yeah sure. HuGo fans will buy this I don't, it smells.
