I understand that those picks arent worth much and dont hit often but why post 31st and 37th former pics showing the exact picks at that spot instead looking at it from a 31-37 range, thats usually where the ONE good pick in the second round comes from, just saying ,
Zellweger, Beck are two recent excellent picks in that range.

Maybe a tad steep but our pro scouting probably sees untapped potential due to lower usage in Colorado. Lets be honest here, if a 31st overall pick became what Newhook is now it would be considered successful no?

I'm in no way saying we should throw away picks for nothing but for a move like this it's worth the risk considering what Newhook already is.

Hawks fans were singing a similar tune last year though… it is a bit of group bias in the here and now context. He is still only 22, give him a chance
I just said I don’t know what to think, that means I’m open to finding out. Who said anything about not giving him a chance?

There’s a difference between that and asking what the roster building plan is.

Dach has zero to do with Newhook. The latter is a winger and smaller player joining a predominantly undersized team. He doesn’t help optimize our asset mix, hence I want to see what else Hughes has in store.

I was high on Newhook before the draft. I haven't seen enough of him since except for playoff hockey to form an educated opinion. He can skate but his line was totally underwhelming last post season. Like I said earlier Logan O'Connor was more noticeable but it's very possible Bednar had him concentrating on the D side of the puck. He will be a winger with us and will have no worries about making mistakes. I not ready to write this off as a terrible move.
O'Connor is shit but he is 26 so of course Bednar overplayed him and he still did nothing.

Center stuff doesn't bother me, Newhook is being acquired to play on Dach's wing. Maybe they experiment with him at C in a couple years but he's going to be a winger first and foremost. That alone should help him unlock the offensive tools as he won't need to worry about C responsibilities anymore.

Yeah this is how I view it too. We traded an extra pick to accelerate 3 years of development of a late round pick.

I think they probably want him at wing in the top 6. Or 3C if they ship out Dvorak?

But I would think they want to bring him up the lineup to give him a better opportunity to develop than he had in Colorado.

I like the trade a lot personally. Newhook is really skilled.

As a draft nut, sure is going to lessen the fun of the next two days but...

1. Obviously Hughes is trying to get this team back in contention quicker than you can with draft picks (Dach trade last year, Newhook this year) so at least he's being consistent and following a plan.

2. The concern over the size of Newhook is overblown IMO because please take a look at the size of our head coach and how he was able to make the hall of fame. He obviously has a style of play that emphasizes speed and skill over size that was very successful, so I'm not worried to much about that. I also think that they'll be looking to moving Newhook to the wing...

3. As far as our roster crunch, (both F's and D's )to me this was always Hughes' biggest problem this offseason and am very curious how he's going to clear the space to have room for all these players especially since the older players that don't fit into the "window" that Hughes in trying to create are not attractive skill wise or contracts so I don't know how he's going to get other teams to trade for these players and not get much more than a bucket of pucks back, but we'll see.

4. I also think a trade down from 5 is a lot more likely now than before this trade especially if Michkov is available at 5. I think it makes a Leonard/ Benson pick more likely since their style of play is easier to translate to the NHL sooner so they can contribute sooner rather than later.

Fan of the player, but not of the price. That being said, less than 200 games in the NHL, he's still developing and he got no ice time in Colorado.

I REALLY didn't like the Dach move at the time. So going to give this a chance.
This is a massive overpayment imo. Kotkaniemi was also younger than Newhook when the Habs gave up on him and some of the guys here are OK with this trade but wanted Kotkaniemi out asap ? I don't understand the double standard here... I would pick Kotkaniemi over Newhook any day of the week. This feels like a panic move. The habs had 3 picks in the top 40 and now only the 5th remains in a deep draft from what I understand. NHL stars like Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Jordan Kyrou, etc. were all 2nd round picks... By not having those picks, the organization give up on that potential home run. I wouldn't mind in another weaker year, but this year doesn't seems like the year to make that kind of Newhook move. This is sad... I was excited for that 2nd round this year :(

Doesn't this smell like mediocrity? What if Smith is available at 5, doesn't Newhook become redundant? I don't get it.
I view him more as a third line option. Hughes imo is not interested in investing into non elite pieces that will take 4-5 years just to be alright NHLers. I guess they view Newhook as a good middle six option going forward which is fine. Fits the teams age
