I'm warming up to this trade. I think it's a gamble worth taking trading quantity and hoping to get quality given the depth in the system the Habs have. Newhook not so long ago was labeled a can't miss prospect.

Come on man, which of these players are part of our long-term future? Two of them?

The point is that people are making a stink over him being 5'10" and 190 lbs like he's a small player simply because they just look for anything to display their displeasure with the move. They're talking like he's Sean Farrell-sized.

Barring any other trades, next year, the guys I listed are on the roster.

Hughes just talked about the possibility of trading down, if Michkov is still there at 5, could be listening tomorrow night for Gary's 'We have a trade to announce...'.

They will probably wait to see if one of the centers fall.

As a Canucks fan I wanted Newhook instead of Podkolzin at the 2019 draft. I also wanted Boldy. Still not sold on the Russian. He shows flashes of being a horse but no consistency.

I think Newhook will be a lock in your top 6 though not likely a top 2 Centre. He can flat out fly. Those picks weren’t going to play for you in the next three years. You guys Have have some nice pieces. Newhook is just a kid himself. You guys aren’t far off especially with the # 5 pick.

I view him more as a third line option. Hughes imo is not interested in investing into non elite pieces that will take 4-5 years just to be alright NHLers. I guess they view Newhook as a good middle six option going forward which is fine. Fits the teams age
A 1st and a 2nd for a 3L player? That's a fail.

Worth noting Newhook played leftwing at the u18's and looked very good, obviously that is very low competition and years ago of course. Looks like he has good tools from what I have seen. Put him with gifted offensive players and hopefully his production jumps. Playing with bums on the 3rd line in Colorado definitely did him no favors. I dislike the trade currently but Hopefully it pans out as if he can be a top six LW with 60ish point upside we can call this trade a win.

I do think Hrabal, Augustine od Bjarnason have huge potentials.
Goalie is the most wildcard position there is. Maybe you're right... but goalies who go in the first round have a much higher success rate than afterwards. I don't blame Montreal for waiting another year (or looking elsewhere) for the position.

PLD haters must love this move, 2 years younger, 6 inch smaller, half the production and full of potential !

I didn't want PLD, Dach or Newhook, I would have rather burnt this shit to the ground and just had a ton of picks over the next few years and sadly look at a 7 year rebuild. But I do trust Hughes so far so we'll see. Dach has been much better then I thought he would so hopefully Newhook is the same. I was never impressed with PLD.

Doesn't this smell like mediocrity? What if Smith is available at 5, doesn't Newhook become redundant? I don't get it.

no, not at all. Smith is high high end talent.

You remember when Newhook was ahead of Caufield in terms of development and a whole section of HF regretted not drafting him instead?

lol, I do recall there was a thread on the prospect board about it, there was some gold in there if I recall correctly.

23 yo Domi would though? Which is my point?

Domi was more established, in his rookie year he had almost as many points as Newhook has in his NHL career. So not the same situation, although 31 and 37 seems a high price as it's a risky move since you know less of what you are getting with Newhook vs when we got Domi.

Heineman hasn't really amounted to anything and likely won't.

why do you say that? Hard to amount to anything when he just got here though.

Fun fact: the only habs second round picks that have carved out an nhl career since 2012 have been Lekhonen and Romanov. Gives you a sense of the odds of those picks.

Well 3 years in a row with no 2nd round picks and 2019 to 2022 is too soon to say. So 7 drafts ('12-'18) but 3 without 2nd round picks.

I'm uneven about this one.

Was a fan of his coming out of college due to a good skill level and hustle combo, but as a regular Colorado watcher I was starting to get the impression his "processor," for lack of a better term, was sorely lacking. He was at his best when things are simple and limited as far as decision making, which concerns me when projecting him higher in the lineup. He could do well in spurts, questions over long periods of a season.

This is a massive overpayment imo. Kotkaniemi was also younger than Newhook when the Habs gave up on him and some of the guys here are OK with this trade but wanted Kotkaniemi out asap ? I don't understand the double standard here... I would pick Kotkaniemi over Newhook any day of the week. This feels like a panic move. The habs had 3 picks in the top 40 and now only the 5th remains in a deep draft from what I understand. NHL stars like Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Jordan Kyrou, etc. were all 2nd round picks... By not having those picks, the organization give up on that potential home run. I wouldn't mind in another weaker year, but this year doesn't seems like the year to make that kind of Newhook move. This is sad... I was excited for that 2nd round this year :(
I mean we didn't exactly give up on KK, we didn't even trade him. He signed an offer sheet for ridiculous money and we let him go for the compensation. I do think it was a bit of an overpay but not much, these were essentially 2nd round picks. I know some teams hit it out the park with picks at this level but it's quite rare. You are lucky to get an NHLer period. Sucks to lose the lottery ticket like you said but I'll wait and see what the pro scouts see in this guy first. So far they have earned some confidence.

So..because we can't develop people in the 2nd round, we just give those picks away???

Less than 25% of all 2nd rounders ever make the NHL, let alone carve out a long term career. While I'm a bit iffy on the trade, saying this is a Bergevin deal is absolutely ridiculous. The odds are neither one of the picks we gave up will amount to anything.

avs board says "not a fast skater" ?
Alright so my first thoughts:
I don't hate this deal since it goes with management's MO and what they've preached since day 1. The Dach move has also proven that a) they have an eye for talent b) we have the right people in charge for these kind of moves with MSL and Nicholas and c) it accelarates the rebuild. I'm super curious as to what's next since the forward group is already super crowded.

So let's do a deep dive:
At first glance, Newhook's stats are bit disappointing. Point pace went down compared to last year. Not much improvement on time on ice (so role; Compher stole the minutes he was supposed to get) and less shots on goal than the year before. His underlying numbers don't really indicate he was unlucky (not a super high IPP or on ice % percentage). Slightly more OZ starts than last year so not as sheltered.

Okay let's continue, how about linemates:
That's where things get interesting

He started off cold, was better in the middle stretch and then had his worst stretch to end the year. Seems like he lost the confidence of coaching staff there. Maybe he was demoralized by injuries or his game was considered too risky to Bednar's liking since the Avs were barely getting by around that time of the season when he was playing 16+ mins a game.

That goal at 1:10 is definitely exciting stuff. Seems to be more of a playmaker than shooter. Curious what the folks have to say about his shot or our prospect gurus.

THis is a player who was coveted for his skating in his draft year and is still his best skill. Now is skating something the team was missing? Hard to say but the team didn't really have a speedster in the line-up. I'm curious as to what role they see Newhook having on the team. At this price, I think I would have preferred going for Lafreniere instead. That being said, if there is one thing that is different between these two players is definitely skating ability so management probably decided to give the edge to the struggling young player with skating as a forte rather than opposite.

I wonder if he can play RW despite being a LH shot.

In the highlights he reminds me of a prime Maxime Afinogenov.

Hughes just brought up the fact that they won't be able sign all their draft picks due to the 50 contract limit. Was part of the consideration with today's deal according to him.

Maybe he's better suited as a winger where everything is simpler.

Not sure what to think. Really liked him his draft year but this price seems steep considering he hasn’t really done much. But he was also down the lineup.
10$ says you said the same last year about Dach
Copy paste ?

My problem is that we didn’t need a player of the style of Newhook. A RD or a big forward for that price ? Yes ! An other small forward ? No thanks !
If that small forward is Matvei Michkov, I say a big THANKS TO THE HEAVENS!

Not a fan of this deal if I'm honest. He's young at 22, but small at 5'10. It has to mean more moves are coming though as we now have too many centers. Suzuki, Dach, Newhook, Dvorak, Evans.(edit: forgot Monahan)

Hopefully there's more moves coming. We have too many players signed right now.

It's funny how as a prospect, he was a speedy uber talented high IQ player that played with grit, and now Avs fans say he's not that quick (has a short stride), not skilled enough to be a top 6 forward, has low IQ, and loses every battle.
And as per Avs fans, he can’t play centre.

We’ll have to wait and find out for ourselves.

I just don’t like the idea of giving up these picks in such a deep draft. Maybe Hughes knows something.
