Why do this trade now, instead of waiting tomorrow or Thursday at the draft table ? I guess Sakic gonna use one or two of these picks to make acquisitions.

There was nothing preventing us from driving a harder bargain or trying elsewhere, either.
I was high on Newhook before the draft. I haven't seen enough of him since except for playoff hockey to form an educated opinion. He can skate but his line was totally underwhelming last post season. Like I said earlier Logan O'Connor was more noticeable but it's very possible Bednar had him concentrating on the D side of the puck. He will be a winger with us and will have no worries about making mistakes. I'm not ready to write this off as a terrible move.

We are suppose to draft our #1 goalie with this year first round pick.... I just don't understand why we traded for another small forward? Don't we already have Farell, Mesar, Caufield, RHP and now Newhook.... If we draft Michkov, another small forward.

Here's a list of goalies who have been drafted in the first two rounds from 2010-2020 (enough time to establish themselves or start to):

-Campbell
-Visentin
-Pickard
-Simpson
-Hellberg
-Gibson, John
-Gibson, Chris
-Vasilevskiy
-Subban
-Dansk
-Stolarz
-Fucale
-Jarry
-Comrie
-McDonald
-Demko
-Nedeljkovic
-Vanecek
-Halverson
-Samsonov
-Hart
-Gustavsson
-Fitzpatrick
-Oettinger
-Luukkonen
-Lindbom
-Rodrigue
-Knight
-Kochetkov
-Sogaard
-Jones
-Askarov
-Blomqvist

Here's a non-exhaustive list of goalies from those draft classes who were taken after the 2nd round or undrafted:

-Ullmark
-Georgiev
-Hellebuyck
-Saros
-Shesterkin
-Sorokin
-Binnington
-Husso
-Swayman
-Vejmelka
-DeSmith

The idea that you can just draft a #1 goalie in the 1st, or even that you need to, is ridiculous.

Also, to those that can't understand the direction of this team, I think it is pretty clear...

Slaf-Suzy-Cole
Newfy-Dach-___

Guess who is in the blank.

Very expensive acquisition for what he is worthing.

There's not a goalie ranked in the first round this year.

If we want to draft a number one goalie, I'd say we wait until there are better prospects available.

I hate this trade way too much value for and to much risky… Newhook isn’t a top 6 player or shown any flash of being top 6, there was no competition behind Mackinnon in COL and he couldn’t make it , also he isn’t signed and he isn’t filling a need… He isn’t .5ppg with a stack team, He doesn’t have size and hasn’t performed in the playoff either (7pts in 27 games)… also making the trade without knowing who might be available at 31/37… in my head you make this deal when you know player you were targeting won’t be available.

Dach had shown elite qualities and had a injury and horrible season. This isn’t the same at all COL needed guy to fill the line up and Newhook was basically warm body on a good team…

Odd are still that Newhook is better than 31 and 37 but I there still a chance or one both could be more valuable… Newhook doesn’t have Dach upside, doesn’t play a position of need, we have plenty of middle 6 player not sure way we are adding right now or paying such a high price…

Is that really a high expectation?? 😆
My post had nothing to do with expectations.

Just adding perspective.

I get that the 31st and/or 37th overall represent a mystery box and everyone loves mystery boxes, but I love these kind of moves 12-18 months ago we would have been laughed at for even suggesting acquiring him.

The risk factor with Newhook is much less than the picks that were traded to acquire him.

I understand that those picks arent worth much and dont hit often but why post 31st and 37th former pics showing the exact picks at that spot instead looking at it from a 31-37 range, thats usually where the ONE good pick in the second round comes from, just saying ,

I do think Hrabal, Augustine od Bjarnason have huge potentials.

A lot of people (myself included) hated the Dach trade last summer. I’m happily eating crow today.

I really like Newhook’s potential and style of play, he could very well be poised to have a breakout year. Coming into a young nucleus that includes Caufield and Dach which are the same age, Suzuki, Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Roy… these guys are all the same age.

Theres a lot to like here too.
I'll definitely give Hughes and company the benefit of the doubt, and even in the worst case scenario it's not like I'll be grabbing my pitchfork because no GM will have a perfect record and Hughes has still done way more good then bad.

But like I said, seems like we paid a premium, if you look at any of the draft value type charts then 31 and 37 should get you into the late teens or early 20s. Newhook was a late teen pick and has likely lost value since his draft. Hopefully Newhook proves Hughes right.

Can anybody repost the last 10 years of 31st and 37th picks?

Honestly my staycation starts today I can take a look.

Last 31st overalls

Logan Mailloux
Ozzy Wiesblatt
Ryan Johnson
Alexander Alexeyev
Klim Kostin
Egor Korshov
Jeremy Roy
Brandon Lemieux
Ian McCoshen
Oscar Dansk
David Musil
Tyler Pitlick (2010)

Literally nothing of value outside of future #1D Logan Mailloux

For 37th overall; Brandon Carlo (2015), Boone Jenner (2011) and Justin Faulk (2010)...there's also Nedeljkovic (2014) since goalies take longer to develop but I don't think he'll be a starter.

I agree on PLD cuz, but Newhook is meh. Colorado prefers the corpse of Ryan Johansen than him at 2C. I guess we will see. My initial reaction may look very dumb in a year or two.
Yes your initial reaction looks dumb, you don't deserve to have me as your cousin anymore. SORRY.

not to mention the fact that by the time picks 31 and 37 are ready to contribute in a tangible way (if that), Suzuki, Dach, Guhle, Caufield will be 4-5 years older.

Maybe it has something to do with Michkov showing up and meeting with teams
