I love the fact that HuGo are not scared to make gambles. You stay mediocre like the Habs have been for the last +30 years if you never make gambles. Last year it was Dach and this year it is Newhook.
Newhook has loads of talent and could flourish under MSL.
He's not redundant even with Smith because I expect him to play at the wing.
Habs have a shitload of good prospects, losing the 31st and 37th is far from a big deal.
Good stuff, PLD can f*** off with his 8 millions.

Newhook is listed has a center, so Michkov is still on.

If so, the size will then become a real issue. 'Cause we didn't ship those picks to get a 3rd liner. Idea is that we could potentially develop Newhook as a 2nd liner. Which then means that in your top 6, you will have Suzuki, Caufield, Michkov and Newhook. You don't win with this. Unless, we are fine with having Newhook center a 3rd line and then we have Suzuki, Caufield and Michkov.

We are suppose to draft our #1 goalie with this year first round pick.... I just don't understand why we traded for another small forward? Don't we already have Farell, Mesar, Caufield, RHP and now Newhook.... If we draft Michkov, another small forward.

I don't agree with you about this one. This draft is rather deep and Habs would had gotten a very good player, at least an elite goaltender in the making.

Is there an elite goalie in this draft? It doesn't appear so. None were ranked in the first round.

Yes, it's a deep draft. You could be right and maybe we'll look back with regret. But Newhook's a solid young player who went mid 1st a few years back. If the team feels he's ready now then you've saved four years of develoment. I'm sure that's factoring into the decision.

We just got a similar player to Oliver Moore, 31+37 for a Oliver Moore like player is a great move, especially considering how loaded our prospect pool already is. Habs are going to be a really fast team.

Dach wasn't Dach either when Habs got him last season

Dach was/is 6ft4 with great skating and hands, former 3rd overall. Huge upside. Newhook is a soft 5ft10 with decent upside. A late first and a early second in one of the best if not the best draft since 2015 for him is a very steep price. Colorado are rolling on the floor laughing.

if you're looking at the trade purely from a draft value perspective:



#16 is worth 790
#31 is worth 320, #37 is worth 240 = 560, add 50 or 60'ish points for Fairbrother, we still come out ahead

Habs got Barron and a second round pick (late second in the end) for Lekhonen who at that point was a 26 year old, middle sixer who scored in the 30 point range.

Fair value for Newhook's current production, age and room for growth.
