Fun fact: the only habs second round picks that have carved out an nhl career since 2012 have been Lekhonen and Romanov. Gives you a sense of the odds of those picks.

Look at Lekhonen's production in this first two season with the habs. In fact a lot of folks here didnt think he had any offensive game at all by the time they traded him.

Y'all need to wait and see.

I'm not too sure how we'll be a contender if we're populated by 5'10" smurfs.

This seems like a panic/PR move. Nothing more, nothing less.

Come on man, aren't you tired of this team being pushed around? Isn't everyone?

I don't for one second feel Hughes made a panic move, like that to me just makes no sense, panic over what? Do you listen to him speak, does he sound like a guy that panics much? Or isn't very intelligent? What has he done wrong so far that leads you to believe he would indeed feel the need to panic here?

For years and years on this site I have said what feels like a million times that HF posters overrate height. Give me great lower body strength and good solid frame any day. So 5'10 to me I don't care, how strong is he especially lower body, how well does he use his frame, etc... I haven't seen him since his NCAA days, he was very good there and his AHL stats despite very small sample are very impressive so I'm willing to give it time.

I am not tired of this team being pushed around if I'm honest, because I haven't sat and watched a full Habs game in some time (I don't think I saw 1 full game this year). But even if I did I wouldn't care that much because I don't believe we are close to a contender and got to think we are years away and that many if not most from this years roster will not be here when we are contenders. So in the end the main thing I care about is getting the best draft picks we can (which remains to be seen, there's some good some really good, some bad and some very concerning picks from last year but 1 year out is tough to get much of a read one way or the other)

The other thing is the development. There likely isn't many on this board that place more stock into development then me, I really believe they found the HC in MSL, and I think they found the GM in Hughes, so that's 2 checks. Now can they actually develop prospects, only time will tell but you listen to Adam Nicholas then you should be at least somewhat hopefully they can actually do this.

Not as excited as the Dach trade last year but let's see what is their plan. Might have other trades up their sleeves.
I would presume they have to. Again, we have too many forwards. Unless the plan is to start Slaf in the minors and waive a couple bodies, there are too many.

I don't know much about the player aside from his hype from his draft year, but I don't know what playing small means, either. He seems to be a skilled player, and so I wouldn't expect him to be laying huge hits and running people. But, if he can play like Suzuki and be strong on the puck, then I am good with that. Will be interesting to see him in training camp.
Playing small means avoiding contact at all costs.

Benson is a small player but does not play small. Gallagher does not play small. Etc etc etc

I don’t get this one.
I liked Newhook in his draft year but there’s been little progression.

Giving up two top-40 picks in a deep draft could come back to bite us.

I want to make it clear, I don't hate the trade, especially if it leads to moving Josh Anderson or the #5 to acquire some other good picks.

I just hate going from 3 Top-40 picks in one of the deepest drafts I've ever seen to just 1 pick.

If we trade 5 for 7 and 22, I like this year a whole lot more.

That's what we all hate......

We are suppose to draft our #1 goalie with this year first round pick.... I just don't understand why we traded for another small forward? Don't we already have Farell, Mesar, Caufield, RHP and now Newhook.... If we draft Michkov, another small forward.

He can play the bumper on the PP, effective carrying the puck through the neutral zone. Very interesting addition given our up-and-coming wing prospects.

I wonder where he fits?

Well we're not so you don't have to worry

Would you have traded #31 & #37 for #16 this year?
That's where Newhook was drafted in a deep 2019 draft

Only nine guys from that draft class are ahead of him so far in point production:

What did we just get into?

I don’t know what to think other than looking forward to seeing what else Hughes does.
Hawks fans were singing a similar tune last year though… it is a bit of group bias in the here and now context. He is still only 22, give him a chance

I didn't care about the discount, I wanted the player. Newhook is dime a dozen, how many 60 points 6f4 C do we have in the pipeline?
Fair enough, but that's quite a rare position on this boards.

Most of us who wanted to trade for PLD saw this as a Trouba kind of a trade, not a bidding match against other suitors.

So..because we can't develop people in the 2nd round, we just give those picks away???

Im a big draft guy and hate seeing picks traded. I dont mind this trade though as we still have a top 5 pick. The Florida pick turned out less appealing as it first was and having to give up a 2nd and Fairbrother to get Newhook I like. So IMO its a great gamble for a player ready to step into the lineup with top line potential. I wonder how the contract is going to look might be the best question.....i don't get much involved in contract talk so if anyone might have an idea what we might be looking at that be great.

I think he’ll play on the wing.

He’ll replace Farrell on the post-Hoffman depth chart - some had SF pencilled in - more certainty with AN. … and more size. lol

Instead of 50/50 odds of landing an NHL’er, we get a sure thing. The 2nd is the premium.

I guess Hughes preferred a 22 yr old to another 18 year old.

It would be interesting to see if they try to trade Newhook for PLD. Stranger things have happened. The next 48 hrs will be very interesting.

I'm not sure what the plan for Newhook is here but I'm okay with us stockpiling young talent. If Newhook is going to be a depth player, I don't think that's a bad thing. That's what the 31st would've been anyway. Hughes is probably trying to advance the rebuild a little by adding guys in their early 20s rather than fielding total rookies throughout. I"m good with that strategy. It's certainly better than going after the Dale Weisse's of this world and trying to build that way.
I don't agree with you about this one. This draft is rather deep and Habs would had gotten a very good player, at least an elite goaltender in the making.

Newhook doesn't bring nothing special to this line up> He is a really meh vanilla player.

Im not impressed with the move but they might know something we don't know.

I can almost 100% guarantee that they'll use the 5th pick to draft size. Smith/ Carlsson/ or trade down and get Reinbacher/ Dvorsky or 2 mid picks Wood and someone else?

Guarantee they're not picking Michkov or Leonard or Benson
