Florida f***ed us in the butt and the mid-round first pick turned into a 31st.
We lost PLD to LA.
Kojak traded a late first and a high 2nd for a player who may have plateaued.

Everything is going wrong, I'm expecting nothing, but more disappointment tomorrow.

This makes me worried they pick Reinbacher now lol
(I knoooooow , I know, could be worse than getting a top 4 RD -maybe-)

Honestly dude, give me:

Hutson - Reinbacher long term with the rest of our guys on D below them, and Caufield/Dach/Suzuki/Newhook(???)/Slaf?? And I’m totally fine with that

There’s also a half decent chance we get a good player with our first next year too

We ain’t done with being shit just yet lmao

Edit for accuracy

I wouldnt say that, we fullfilled our prospects pool in the last 3 yrs, we had ton of picks and at some point, we cant sign them all. Getting a kid like Newhook who is only 22 also accelerate our rebuild a bit.

Exactly what Hughes said in his media scrum earlier. That they have so many players in the cupboard and the 50-contract limit and they won't be able to sign everyone they pick.

Should have shown more yes

Colorado had a need at Center and he had the opportunity to replace Kadri but he didn’t show he could do it

This is a concern. But I don't see him as a center anyways.

But that's the biggest difference between Newhook and Dach, aside from size. Dach wasn't working in a terrible organization. Newhook wasn't working in an A+ organization.

Still, hopefully it works out. And of course another difference is we paid a 13th for Dach, but only a 31st + 37th + Fairbrother for Newhook.

Asking a 21 year old to replace a 87 point player on the defending champs is a big ask.

Colorado is in win now mode, while the Habs aren't even close to a playoff team so they can afford to be patient with him.

Eg Armia and 5, for 7 and 22. Replaces the first rounder lost to Colorado and clears a roster spot. Then they draft a big forward and a RD. Like... Reinbacher and Musty, or Dvorsky and Willander.
Hadn't thought of that but if they were to trade down could be an opportunity to dump a contract.

how you getting Reinbacher and a 5th Overall up front?

Let's be real, most fans have a ridiculously base understanding of the game and the scouting reports I'm seeing on Newhook are amateurish. As if the average Avs fan can scout a guy properly that plays 13 mins a night with 2 plugs.
The "can't create separation" is especially puzzling to me, because I distinctly remember Newhook being described as an ELITE skater in his draft year.

Alright so my first thoughts:
I don't hate this deal since it goes with management's MO and what they've preached since day 1. The Dach move has also proven that a) they have an eye for talent b) we have the right people in charge for these kind of moves with MSL and Nicholas and c) it accelarates the rebuild. I'm super curious as to what's next since the forward group is already super crowded.

So let's do a deep dive:
At first glance, Newhook's stats are bit disappointing. Point pace went down compared to last year. Not much improvement on time on ice (so role; Compher stole the minutes he was supposed to get) and less shots on goal than the year before. His underlying numbers don't really indicate he was unlucky (not a super high IPP or on ice % percentage). Slightly more OZ starts than last year so not as sheltered.

Okay let's continue, how about linemates:
That's where things get interesting

He started off cold, was better in the middle stretch and then had his worst stretch to end the year. Seems like he lost the confidence of coaching staff there. Maybe he was demoralized by injuries or his game was considered too risky to Bednar's liking since the Avs were barely getting by around that time of the season when he was playing 16+ mins a game.

That goal at 1:10 is definitely exciting stuff. Seems to be more of a playmaker than shooter. Curious what the folks have to say about his shot or our prospect gurus.

THis is a player who was coveted for his skating in his draft year and is still his best skill. Now is skating something the team was missing? Hard to say but the team didn't really have a speedster in the line-up. I'm curious as to what role they see Newhook having on the team. At this price, I think I would have preferred going for Lafreniere instead. That being said, if there is one thing that is different between these two players is definitely skating ability so management probably decided to give the edge to the struggling young player with skating as a forte rather than opposite.

I wonder if he can play RW despite being a LH shot.

Nice post thank you.

Doubt there was a Lafreniere at this price tho.

Don't know much about this player supposedly he's an elite top 6 talent. Kind of a steep price to give up. Kind of on the fence with this one.
Well it's funny how it goes isn't it lol
That 2019 draft man..
Started out, wanted to be top 5, so we could draft Kirby Dach lol
When that wasn't happening and it was more 15th overall,
Wanted Newhook lol

Instead we pick some loser who fell outta the Top10 named Cole Caufield and we're now 4 years later with all 3 of them lmao

Very possible Colorado was not interested in getting wingers back.
Mesar can play center.

I agree with Johnson, at first blush, looking like they overpaid in what is a deep draft. Time will tell but from the looks of it, we got ourselves a middle six winger who has the potential to be more.

As a draft junkie, you are obviously sad to see those picks go..

but Newhook was such a draft crush and I'd say contextually, his numbers in Colorado are really promising.

Great finisher, left shot, high end skater.. that adds a lot of pace and dimension up front. Historically our picks in those ranges have yielded as Poehling and Mathieu Carle.. on occasion it's been PK Subban so you never know, but you also have to consider where we are in our build.

They want to make good on the Suzuki/Dach/Caufield window so adding talent in that range without taking too much from the pick cupboard is still a really smart play and why not do what you did with Dach?

I would think that this opens the door for a trade down with Philly.

If you can turn 5 into 7 and 22, and turn Chiarot and a 2nd in Newhook? Leave with Reinbacher/Dvorsky/Leonard and someone at 22? How could you hate that?
