After looking at his stats more I definitely like that in the BCHL, in NCAA and in the AHL, his goal totals were very solid. He finished 1st in scoring in his freshman season and outshined Boldy which is nothing to sneeze at. We didn't have someone with legit elite speed in the line up or pipeline for that matter. I think for that reason the move to wing could help him big time.

This is a concern. But I don't see him as a center anyways.

But that's the biggest difference between Newhook and Dach, aside from size. Dach wasn't working in a terrible organization. Newhook wasn't working in an A+ organization.

Still, hopefully it works out. And of course another difference is we paid a 13th for Dach, but only a 31st + 37th + Fairbrother for Newhook.

Newhook also came into a team that is in win now mode. So the top of their roster is full of established NHL players. Avs weren't in place where they can add a young player to the top of their line-up. So Newhook was stuck in the bottom-6.

Also for Dach, we paid Romanov, 13th, 66th & 98th. In sepearate trades, but one was made so the other one could happen.

There's a difference between showing more and should have peaked.

In fact, he hasn't even played 3 years. He just played his second full season.

I would have prefer, we try Sean Farrel in the top 6. We have way to many forward now. I pretty sure, we are goign to trade a forward in the draft.

Emotions lowered…

I guess what’s disappointing some of us is that we didn’t get a clear upgrade on our team roster today, despite trading futures away.

I’m annoyed at how many useless and apparently worthless prospects we have now. Something’s gotta give.

Futures are the worthless prospect of tomorrow.
It's the same thing. Just because you're not sure of what that pick will become it makes you dream until you realize that they are redundant.

our 31st and 37th will have end up another Mesar, Beck, Kapanen, Struble type of prospect, which we have a load of already.

Now, I'm not thrilled either but we have to see how it goes.......I thought a 13th overall for Dach last year was huge overpayment and yet, I wouldn't have traded him for Dubois.....or even the 10th pick overall this year.

Gorton has a huge and great track records on getting gems before they breakout

So, they traded 2 decent picks in a deep draft because of too many prospects ?

The vast majority of these prospects are meh and very likely won't get a contract.

What a stupid notion.

If the prospect pool was so deep and good you could have used 1, or 2 and made this deal.

Still going to wait and cheer for him to succeed, but this management is giving me trust issues and incompetence issues.

Not only do I have Roy ahead of Farrell, but also Owen Beck - the same Owen Beck that no one wanted to give up for PLD.
I think, given Caufield and now Newhook, those two small prospects in particular (Farrell/Roy) are unlikely to be seen with a clear path or transition to the NHL. They need top6 usage and won’t get it.

More of the same: Another smallish player who plays small
Newhook is a serious top 6, natural C & 22 years old. This kid from Newfoundland is talented, gritty and enjoys playing every day. Good deal for Sakic given he just picked up a big vet C from Nashville. He also picks up basically 2 early 2nds and a LD prospect which MTL has in abundance

Don't know much about this player supposedly he's an elite top 6 talent. Kind of a steep price to give up. Kind of on the fence with this one.

He's not elite. Pretty small, so doubt he's able to do much in board battles, got pretty much benched in playoffs for veteran guys two years in a row.

I think there's upside, but I would have been happier with a Durzi like deal. One of 31 or 37, and not both.

Our prospect pool is rather underwhelming and overstuffed. Don’t let the hype machine fool you — the skill guys have physical limitations and the non-skill guys are irrelevant. We don’t have a single blue-chip prospect.

Who are we loaded with? Mesar many are calling a bust. Please tell me what top six prospects we have?
i just gave you those names on top of those you mentioned, plus Slafkovsky who just turned 19, we already have Dach/Suzuki/Caufield who are top 6 locks.. how many players do you think can play in the top 6? lol

on top of this years draft

Farrell could get a shot to play top-6 at camp and take it from there. Farrell could also get those minutes in Laval if he doesn't force Habs' hands at camp. There will also be Roy who will get looks at camp.

I also think this move precludes other deals. Because Newhook also needs to be signed. And although Habs will again have LTIR cushion, they still need to make room on the cap while also making room in the line-up.

Working the graveyard 12 hour shift is kinda nice. I wake up to all sorts of excitement before work
Interesting in that he's going to play on the NHL team, meaning more moves to be made.

Roy is 6'0.

And as per Avs fans, he can’t play centre.

We’ll have to wait and find out for ourselves.

I just don’t like the idea of giving up these picks in such a deep draft. Maybe Hughes knows something.
Hughes knows something. I can't help but feel confident after watching the interview alongside Marty. Size is not an issue his torso is very similar to Nick Suzuki. His vesatility experience and character all fit their "Vision" he will fit in very nicely with our group. They also mentioned trying to make an impression on a Stanley Cup championship team is a daunting task for a youngster the expectations can be stifling for a skilled kid. Most importantly they talked about the chair he'll occupy here vs where he was in Colorado. The thing I like is everything they talked about is consistent with what they explained they wanted to create here from day 1. The key will be can they get Newhook to play with more grit and determination because the talent isn't an issue IMO.
