Watching videos of Newhook and... I'm starting to see the upside to this trade. I initially hated the Dach trade and now love it. So. Yeah. Let's see how his season goes.

Oh and there's for sure more to come! A top five pick (or... is it!?!) And something else has to happen to get us trimmed down to roster size. Should be a wild offseason.

We were celebrating the acquisition of these picks the last five years. Darts for the dartboard, etc.

Remember?

How do you get star players if not hitting on them in the draft?

DEVELOPPING THEM.

Stop looking for instant stars, most in the NHL took time to develop.
I beleive we already have one in Caufield, might take another 2 years.

In the jar'o
Well it's funny how it goes isn't it lol
That 2019 draft man..
Started out, wanted to be top 5, so we could draft Kirby Dach lol
When that wasn't happening and it was more 15th overall,
Wanted Newhook lol

Instead we pick some loser who fell outta the Top10 named Cole Caufield and we're now 4 years later with all 3 of them lmao
Maybe Hughes has a good deal of information on these kids during thei time he was an agent. Hopefully this guy booms under MSL like Dach and Caufield did.
An elite top 6 player with 30 points?

He is another small bottom 6 player, this team is full of them
We meet at last the circle is now complete...

So, they traded 2 decent picks in a deep draft because of too many prospects ?

The vast majority of these prospects are meh and very likely won't get a contract.

What a stupid notion.

If the prospect pool was so deep and good you could have used 1, or 2 and made this deal.

Still going to wait and cheer for him to succeed, but this management is giving me trust issues and incompetence issues.

I don't know how. Dach and Matheson, getting a 1st to take Monahan, picking Hutson, Beck, Engstrom, Slaf, hiring MSL, those show incompetence issues to you?

Exactly what Hughes said in his media scrum earlier. That they have so many players in the cupboard and the 50-contract limit and they won't be able to sign everyone they pick.
So we bypass top six picks so we can keep our 3L prospects and Hoffman and Armia provide veteran support for the youth. :huh:I am not impressed, and unless they can pull off a coup at the draft they have lost me.

I like Newhook.

But why would a team in need of cheap 2nd liners trade away Newhook?
You're gonna have to ask Monsieur Sakic for that one,
The only answer you'll get from me is, that form of question can technically be asked of every trade ever made for all time.

In this case, this is obviously the gamble

Apparently Teams are not enthousiasm about the UFA market so the trade market is more enticing for them....we have shit to sell now!

Who’s looking for instant stars?

This team needs high end talent in the skill positions. Having good value draft picks helps to acquire skillful players. Or you can trade for reclamation projects like Newhook, I don’t mind really. Just wondering what they see in Newhook that the Avs don’t see.

You cannot otherwise acquire skill players through the trade or free agent market, price is always too steep for a poverty franchise like ours that lacks skill in every position and depth in every position and can never afford to trade for premium players.

As long as we draft Michkov tomorrow, I'm cool with this trade!

We'll liquidate the dimunitives and LD's over time... Just keep the cream of the crop.
Rather than liquidate them, I want to see them let go for fair value but as part of a roster building strategy. Right now, it just looks like they’re prioritizing unrealized potential with speed.

Not sure I really agree with this post unless your standards are just super high. Montreal is ranked pretty high league wide due in part to its depth in NHL potential guys. That goes hand in hand with the 50 contract limit complicating things; let alone finding time on ice for these guys
They're ranked high because they have a bunch if players that might play 4th line minutes and then fade off into obscurity.

A lot of those prospects are being signed/going to the AHL this season. Those picks wouldn't come to the A for 2 years, maybe more.

Jared Davidson is a good prospect for this team and he might get an AHL prove it deal because he's not that good.

The two prospects wouldn't be a concern.

Now, there's a possibility that those two won't even be as good as Newhook is now, but at least they could draft players that fit into the system as they'd hopefully bring something different than the majority of the forward prospects already in this pool

If we play Hoffman and Armia over RHP and Ylonen, I don't know what I'm going to do.

There shouldn't be any room for those two in the lineup.

Michkov aint happening now; I mean maybe, if somehow they're moving on from Gallagher, RHP, Mesar, Gallagher etc
We're going to see a lot of action in the next 24 hours and I'm not talking about my bedroom

You should have zero expectations from Hoffman and Armia. Bringing them up is just operating in bad faith.

Why don't you bring up Monahan, Anderson, Gallagher, Edmundson, Savard, Matheson or Allen as veteran support for the youth? Why do you bring up Hoffman and Armia?

Do people realize that if Newhook had 50 points he would not be available? Again I get why people dislike the price but it's bizarre that his play thus far is being treated as his ceiling instead of his floor.

The guy is 22 and people are already writing eulogies on his career. It's bizarre, it's as if Alex Newhook is the first highly-regarded smallish prospect to struggle adjusting to playing center in the NHL, and not one in a long line of hundreds of players that moved to the wing in the NHL to play an offensive game.

EDIT: ha @Redux91 beat me to it
It appears as though the cut off point for determining when a player has reached bust status has drastically changed the last decade or so apparently.

i don't think Colorado is done, they're in win now mode so they might not have wanted to wait for Newhook

who knows, they might flip the picks + other assets for a more established center/winger (Lindholm, Toffoli etc) and they did just pick up RyJo, they also have to re-sign Toews/Compher/Byram soon
