Hopefully last year was just a little bit of a sophomore slump for Newhook which plagues so many NHL players and he takes a step forward this year.

Not overly enthusiastic about this move right now but gotta trust Hughes on this one I guess since he knows this player way more than I do.

As an FYI…I doubt Newhook will be a top six centre. He has real potential to be a good top six winger, though. The Avs tried to force him at centre this last year with Kadri having departed and it just didn’t work at all.
Sounds like the Habs want to go with Suzuki and Dach, so I'm thinking he might be on the wing with Dach and Slaf

Who will he displace in the lineup?

Everybody here was raving that we shouldn.t give Dach for Dubois... so where does that leave Newhook... Is he a defensive specialist to replace Evans? Do they intend to convert him as a winger to replace Drouin?

He's a top 6 talent and can play both center and wing. There are plenty of spots available in the top 9 for him to take.

Lots of people overrate late first round picks and second round picks and lots of people aren't patient with young players.

His stats aren't anything special, but they've almost all been at even strength. His 55 ES points the last two years are only behind Suzuki and 1 less than Dvorak/Caufield.

He also spent last year playing with guys mainly like Rodrigues, Cogliano, Nieto and Malgin so he hasn't been playing with much offensive talent.
This seems nice. Untapped upside.

But Hughes isn't following the expected or normal or typical rebuild gameplan. @Lafleurs Guy hope you can concede this point by now.

Yea, it's likely now he moves back a spot or two.

If they trade with Philly.

to PHI: 5th OA
to MTL: 7th OA + 22nd OA (LA's 1st round pick that PHI got from Columbus in the Provorov trade)

So Habs end up moving the 31st OA pick for a young center and then turn around and get a higher 1st round pick back in a separate deal.

Yup, that would be a possibility.

They probably expect not to pick a C, so they made sure to acquire a young C with top 6 potential.

I think this pretty much guarantees we are trading down from 5th, and if so, Hughes had better squeeze every drop out of the return, because right now I’m feeling like we wasted a tank year, when we paid more to acquire Alex Newhook than we got in return for Arturri Lehkonen.

I know that tomorrow....I won't like the deal. 31 and 37....where you probably could get a future No1 goalie and another really great pick....But Newhook still has, I hope, some untapped potential.

Let's hope he's closer to Dach potential than to Jost...

that's what I don't get, it takes away the ability to draft more of what we need
