You wonder if Florida gets us the 17th pick...if that pick alone would have done it. Making us keep pick 37....

At first glance it's a pretty awful trade.
No goal in his last 24 playoffs games.
Awful faceoff stats
If they plan to use him as a left winger does this mean they won't even sign RHP ?
If they plan to use him as a center, I would guess that one of Dvorak or Evans will be traded and we'll suck even more in the faceoff department.

He's a decent skater though so there's that.

Well, he hit 30 points in a bottom 6 role on a stacked team.
I'd imagine on the Habs he gets more ice time and opportunities, along with MSL having him play with confidence. Hope it works out. His stats at Boston college were quite impressive.

I get the motivation behind the pick, but I feel like Hughes gave up too much for a “meh” player that doesn’t really move the goalposts. I hope I’m very wrong, and I’m more than willing to eat crow down the road if so, but nothing that Newhook has done at the NHL level has impressed me much.

Love this trade. It's tough to part with a late first and an early second, but the reality is we're all prone around here to a gambler's fallacy and the odds of those two picks working out even in a stacked draft are low.

I loved Newhook in his draft year, I remember when the Habs went to the podium I wanted Caufield, but if they didn't get Caufield I was alright with Newhook. I seem to recall Newhook being ranked higher than he was picked on draft day, and also that a year out from his draft year he was considered a much higher prospect in the draft.

Yeah, nothing against Newhook. He’s not lost his talent. He can be useful in the NHL.

Ok, now that I'm over the fury of this, the player just does not fit our team at the moment. In a vacuum, it wouldn't be a horrible deal if we had a bunch of 6'2" giants on the team. There's a chance he gets rehabilitated like Dach was.

But this just absolutely reeks of desperation for a player that's had a negative development curve and doesn't bring much to the table in terms of organizational needs (at least Dach has size).

This smacks of Hughes going out to get his ex clients and weak, loserish desperation after seemingly losing out on Dubois.

We'll see what happens today and during the draft

Really like Newhook, habs weren't getting a good player at #31 anyway. However def need to pick up some 2nd round picks in trades here.
I wanted them to target a young RD instead with those assets.

Now it smells more and more like Reinbacher tomorrow.

People who didn't want PLD, what do you think of this? Instead we gave valuable assets for a tiny 30point center which we already have many to choose from. Very nice.

Lots of people overrate late first round picks and second round picks and lots of people aren't patient with young players.

His stats aren't anything special, but they've almost all been at even strength. His 55 ES points the last two years are only behind Suzuki and 1 less than Dvorak/Caufield.

He also spent last year playing with guys mainly like Rodrigues, Cogliano, Nieto and Malgin so he hasn't been playing with much offensive talent.

We had one forward spot before this trade:

Caufield - Suzuki - Dvorak/Monahan
RHP - Dach - Anderson
Slaf - Monahan/Dvorak - ___________
Gallagher - Evans - Ylonen
Pez
Hoffman, Armia aren't part of my plans

I wouldn't mind seeing a 3rd line of Slaf - Monahan - Newhook

I dont freaking understand the overpayment for another enigmatic small player. Another small bottom 6 player. Yea

I mean i’m fine for overpayment if you get something you don’t have.

Newhook is what you were hoping to get with that late first.

Hughes is not done, he's trading down if Smith is not available and we are picking twice in the 1st round.

Yea, it's likely now he moves back a spot or two.

If they trade with Philly.

to PHI: 5th OA
to MTL: 7th OA + 22nd OA (LA's 1st round pick that PHI got from Columbus in the Provorov trade)

So Habs end up moving the 31st OA pick for a young center and then turn around and get a higher 1st round pick back in a separate deal.
