You watched that series and thought we were good at center? Lot of short memories here. Our third and fourth line got smoked and it cost us the series. It was nearly untenable to even have them out there. The answer probably wasn’t to trade for an 8.5 million center but this was a problem that needed resolved somehow.

I didn't think we were good at center. I saw all 4 lines play the 1-3-1 during crunch time and lose.

The answer isn't paying Danualt $5M+ to play on the third line. With who, Fiala? Or does Dubois finally beat out LIzotte for 3C at $8M? Frankly, it's all a shuffle of deck chairs on the Titanic while Kopitar and Doughty coast to retirement while taking up 20% plus of the cap.

So overpaying for Dubois is just quadrupling down on a series of bad hands.

Vilardi is the only prospect the Kings have that’s done a f***ing thing, and he just got traded. Our entire prospect “pool” is now Byfield and Clarke. If you even count Byfield at this point.

That’s it.

Vilardi didn't do anything until he was 23. You would think Vilardi would be a perfect example of why you should be patient with prospects lol.

Also Byfield looked great last year.

No, the FIRST line was destroyed by Draisaitl. That's where they lost. The 4th line was brutal as well, but lets not forget that Kopitar was dominated by Draisaitl.

You can buy 2nd liners galore. And don't glorify Dubois and Fiala, they are both 2nd liners even if it cost first line returns to get them. The measure of a team is how its best players play and how well their bottom six over-achieves. 2nd lines are the easiest thing in the league to acquire.
Point per game players like Fiala are second liners now? Is this an Kurrilino alt account?

It's the 8 x 8.5 that really jumps out more so than the addition of Kupari and a 2nd versus what was rumored.

If the guy is a quitter, imagine what he'll be like now that he's gotten paid.
Jeff Carter was also a quitter, remember?

I don't mind it. I think Blake is playing chess here, 2nd year in a row he's signed an elite talent to an 8 year deal around 8mil. The flat cap era is ending and he's now got franchise players on flat cap money. In 3 years teams will look at us and wonder how we have pld, Danault and fiala for years to come on 21mil.

Big cost and Vilardi hurts, but 8 years is the key here through the players prime.

Why are the Kings taking only one swing?

They gave up none of their big prospects in this deal.

They have 20 mil coming off the books up front next year. Kopitar probably signs the Malkin special 6 mil x 3. Then you have an additional 14 mil to fill in minimal raises.

Take a look at the depth charts. They don't have that much coming off next year, they have already cleared out all the dead weight that they can and still don't have a goalie, 3rd pairing or most of a 4th line under contract.

Roy will get a raise next year. They may end up re-signing Arvidsson now that the depth has been cleared out. Lets see just how much they "save" on Kopitar next year.

They have already moved Faber and Vilardi, and have very few high picks coming in. They can't afford to move any more cost-controlled players and any additional trades will not be coming from areas of depth anymore.

This IS their move. And its for a good player, just not enough to move any needles.

And look what we converted Danault into.

Deepest playoff run made by Danault was with the Habs. Looks like that will be the peak of his professional accomplishments. His bank account is the complete opposite. Thanks to Luc needing to spend American dollars on Quebecois players.

We don’t have any prospects to be patient with. Chromiak? Ok. Byfield was very mediocre last year for a top pick, and I’m higher and more hopeful for him than most. Just ask @Sol.

Anderson Gravs is one of the better one two punches in terms of LD in the league.
I agree, but our 3rd pair got destroyed by EDM.. They acted like Durzi, Walker and Edler were sufficient.. You cant overlook your 3rd pairing in the playoffs. Overall the team needs mroe size and grit.. i wanted to see Dillon coming back also. Or FA signing of Soucy to anchor the 3rd pair.. since you are pencilling either Clarke or Spence at 3RD. It also comes down to being able afford a goalie. After Fiala last summer I just think the fwd group was relatively fine vs whats going on in goal and the d-corps.

Yea but he was signed to an incredible contract, didn't cost us a player who I think is basically just as good if not better, and he had Richards here to rub his back when he was feeling down.

I am a little interested to see Dubois with Fiala. I bet they are going to be really tough to stop.

Pie in the sky picturing:

Byfield-Kopitar-Kempe
Fiala-Dubois-Kaliyev
Moore-Danault-Arvidsson

I don't know how you defend against all of that.

Center depth is what allows you to go cheap on the wings.

No, guys who play on the second and third line are second and third liners.

Go ahead and dispute that.

Actually I think they need to trade Arvidsson now. They have about 2 mill in cap space, and that's without 3 reserve players and a goaltender. 3 ELCs alone for those spots is about 2.6 mill. A worthwhile goaltender about 3 mill.

Good thing we are retaining 2 mill on Provorov for some reason!
