Not really. I expect Norris to replace his production.

A team that finished in the bottom half of scoring in the NHL should not be looking to replace. We need to add. And dropping Debrincats production will take some work to fill, production that could have been used to make us a top 10 scoring team in the league.

I mean, that's how a lot of teams in the cap era have win the cup. When their best players are in their early 20's and haven't gotten their massive payday. See: Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews, Doughty, Maker, etc.

Having your top-end players on ELCs gives you a massive advantage.

As soon as players get paid, it becomes harder. Wasting those years puts you behind.

Look at Toronto.
Last year, Tampa didn't have a single ELC contract.
Two years ago, Cal Foote was their only ELC.
Three years ago, Sergachev, Cirelli and Cernak were their only ELCs.

None of them were "top players" at the time.

And Crosby was making $9M when he won his first Cup while Doughty was making $6M when he won his first Cup.

Assen na yo!

This "core" for Tampa made their first Stanley Cup finals in 2015. Stamkos was 24. Kucherov was 21 (and on his ELC. He scored 22 points in the playoffs that year.). Palat was 23. Hedman was 23. Killorn was 24. They first made the playoffs the season before that.

Their window has been open since that time - going on 9 seasons now. It's likely to stay open for a couple more years.

It didn't "open" 2 years ago.

My mistake. Crosby made his 1st finals on his ELC. MAF was still on his ELC then too. Malkin, Letang and Staal were on their ELC's during their first cup win.

Kings players were on their 2nd contracts, but were about as young as our core was this year and will be next year. Doughty was 21. Kopitar was 24. Brown was 26. Quick was 25. Already had two playoff appearances under their belt.

Things really turned for them when they fired Terry Murray midway through 2012 and hired Sutter. We should do something like that... might push us forward...

I never said the 4M guy will produce like him.
He ranks 64th this season in points and 72nd in goals.
The stats your using make him look better than what he showed this season; you know exactly why that is.

No, you didn't say he will produce like him, you actually suggested he may in fact be better.

"Let him go...big deal.

With the money saved, they can bring in a 2nd line winger who make 4-5-6M/year and we wouldn't notice a substantial difference; hell we might even get lucky and pickup a guy who has more potential."

The stats I used show how good he actually is instead of cherry picking a season when he changed cities and had a baby (their first).

All this talk about him being a 2nd line LW is insane.

Dude is top 30 in points and top 15 in goals since he entered the league and was lighting things up in junior prior to that.

This season he was saddled with a rookie C who played admirably but was out of his element yet still set a career high in assists.

He hit however many posts and was snakebitten in general finding the back of the net.

There is no questioning that his salary creates a dilemma in the short term so have at it with the discussion about what may be the right move for the team but cripes, the stats are overwhelming that he is one of the best point producers and scorers in the league.

It will hurt to lose him.

He wasn't good enough this year for me to really worry about it since he'll want 9 million per. Yeah we gave up a lot to land him but, so far, it hasn't worked out; time to cut our losses.

Its pro sports, it happens.

They had guys like Colton and Hagel who make <$2million, but were on bargain deals

Josh Norris had more even strength and total goals last year in 66 games than Debrincat had this year in a full season. Norris with Batherson and (insert any player) will likely generate more even strength goals than our 2nd line did this year. A forward group like

Tkachuk Stutzle Giroux
Formenton Norris Batherson
Greig Pinto Joseph

Is better than this years group.

Add in our improved D corps and I think our ES scoring goes way up.

Formenton is not coming back to a Canadian NHL team; if he ever comes back to the NHL period.

"We might get lucky and pickup a guy who has more potential" read that out loud again...
Also I never said he was a 2nd liner; I said we can replace his place on the team with a 2nd liner, you know because he plays on the second line. Big difference.

What are you doing with the money you save if DBC walks? Surely they upgrade on Formenton, which would slot him on the third line (if he is allowed to come back).

Condescending pr!ck much? Give me a break. Sure, play word games.

A true, 2nd liner, for $4M and we won't notice a substantial difference compared to the guy who has scored in top 15 of NHL since he entered the league. Sign me up!

Try reading your own posts, perhaps.

People really out here saying we could dump DBC and fill his spot with Alex ****ing Formenton - a man who spent the year out of the league, has played a hair over 100 games in this league, and has a career high of 18 goals and 32 points - and that we would have a better forward group than we would if we kept DBC - the man who in a down year had nearly 30 goals and nearly 70 points.

Some of you are absolutely out to lunch.

Garrioch thinks Debrincat has no plan on staying in Ottawa whatsoever. Garrioch said it was a feeling he got after receiving non-committal responses from Debrincat.

Garrioch "The senators have had the door open since Debrincat arrived, with respect to contract talks. However, there have been no substantial talks between Debrincat's agent and the Senators. I think Debrincat will be traded at the deadline."

We have no choice but to fill in Debrincat's position from in-house. Hopefully a couple of guys can step up.

Apparently Dorion plans on offering a 9 million dollar per year extension to Debrincat.

Huh? I don't think Garrioch said that at all, not that I'd believe him if he did, Garrioch has had no clue lately when it comes to internal stuff.

Some people simply believe that

1. Debrincat is not worth 8M

2. He doesn’t really fit the team identity

3. Our goaltending needs to upgraded.

4. We don’t have sufficient depth up front to be competitive and his money could be better allocate.

You can disagree but neither is wrong it’s just different beliefs on how to build a team.

Entire Sens locker room “I want to be here, this place is special, I want to win here”

Debrincat “I’m going to sit down, I’m going to look out the window, I’m going to stare into the mirror, I’m going to look my agent in the eye, I’m going to look my wife in the eye, I’m going to look my dog in the eye”

He’s not staying. He’s been a distraction all year. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Has a very very similar feel to Bobby Ryan - he arrived and underwhelmed and was all wishy washy about extending, and then Ryan got paid off his history in Anaheim and not Ottawa and took the money and clearly was not invested in being his best, doing it right in Ottawa or even doing things like working out.

Anyways, ADB if he stays and signs will be just like Ryan, an overpaid and underachieving soft winger who doesn’t omay Defence and Is supposed to be a top 3 forward but plays most night like a 3d liner and some nights like a top 6.

Anyways, best to anvoid extending this guy. Haven’t been impressed with his play and he never comes up big, just overall really not impressed, not an impact player just a scorer

You can say that Debrincat has underachieved this year and as a player is smaller in stature but I don't think he's soft at all.

Mathiew Joseph is what you would call soft.

I heard that ADB didn’t want to negotiate in season. No, can’t provide the link

Gamblers fallacy. May have been what happened with Bobby too.

If we get Formenton back at 2M, put another 6M on goalie/D, and recoup a young prospect with a 2nd for him I'm happy.

I think we define soft differently.

I don’t define soft by size because I’ve loved Theo Fluery and MSL - soft is not being able to impact a big hockey game, it’s being quiet when the going gets tough. A guy like Brayden Point isn’t soft because you notice him in big games and big moments - didn’t get that vibe from ADB and that’s why I don’t think he’s worth $8 million. I waited around for him to do something important way to much this season and it never really happened
