You have to think with near certainty that Detroit kicked the tires on Debrincat when he was available last year, and were not willing to offer more than the Sens (especially as they picked 8th, Ottawa 7th). With what is likely noticable diminished value this year, what makes Detroit that much more interested this year? They are in the same boat as Ottawa, up and coming team with a chance to get Debrincat without giving up a prospect and turned it down.

The hard truth is Debrincat went to the highest bidder last year. Teams were leery of him not producing as well with out Kane, and that is not something to be leery of now, they are sure. Secondly, they were leery of the contract, but at least you had him for 1 year at a 6.5M cap hit and still had RFA rights. Now it is likely to be a 9M cap hit with no rights after this year.

I'm not sure what way this is going, but its very hard to see even getting close to our original outlay back with him having diminished value.

Obvious that they just didn't want to trade the 8th overall pick for him last year.

Putting what is currently the 17th overall pick on the table is a lot easier to do, especially when you already own a pick sitting 10th.

It should be a no brainer for them. They need to take the next step after missing the playoffs 7 years in a row.

Dorion can't do anything without new ownership in place

It makes sense both DBC and management to wait and see once ownership is in place. This type of deal will involve signing bonuses and perhaps a different structure to the salary over the years
That is certainly possible & it wouldn't surprise me.

What is interesting is that his salary this season is $9 m. So, if he gets his $9 m Qualifying Offer this summer, he is still just getting next season what he was paid (salary) this year i.e., its a net zero transaction. We saw this cash neutral scenario happening this year with Zaitsev being traded and then being replaced by Chychrun.

Garrioch mentioned that the announcement of the winning bidder would likely be delayed until late April. That means there will be just 2 months to do a lot of work to prepare for the draft and free agency. Some posters have mentioned adding a goalie like Saros, so if this freeze is in place, there's not going to be much time to accomplish all that needs to occur, especially if hiring a new GM is part of the plan.

Making things more complicated is that teams don't know what the cap ceiling will be next year. The combination of a delayed sale, not knowing the cap ceiling, and a decision needing to be made on Debrincat is a bit of sticky wicket.

Ya you got to figure, no long term deals are getting done until new owner, they may be allowed to approve a signing , if officially team has to changed hands yet.
I just made a post on the same subject. If the sale of the team won't happen until late April per Garrioch, there isn't going to be much time for all that needs to happen. Draft and free agency will be in 2 months at that point. I put more details in post #1,879. The Senators will need to find a way to operate on the hockey side to keep the necessary things going depending on how things work out.

It's funny because the sens would have had 2 chances at Luneau who looks like he is just as good as Mintyukov or Krochinski and he was playing in their own back yard. Guys an absolute super star this year. Gatineau has won 21 games in a row. Ranked #1 in Canada and he is their best player.
I desperately wanted to get Luneau and Warren last year. I was thinking we’d need to be in the high teens to ensure Luneau and very late 1st for Warren. I didn’t like the options at 7 so I was hoping a trade down worked out.

Having said all that, all the moves made in the summer served their purpose of exciting fans to re-engage and up sale value so from a non-hockey perspective PD did his job.

Re: bolded - I'm seeing this as the main motivation behind the moves that were made in the summer. Pierre must have known the implications of the Debrincat trade i.e., one year plus the Qualifying Offer.

Would be a huge mistake to trade him IMO. Seems pretty likely that this is a down year and that he gets closer to his career average next year.
Wouldn't be a mistake at all if you trade him for a better and cheaper player. If you trade him for a player who costs the same or more and isn't as good then that would be a mistake.

We should trade all of our players having down years for better and cheaper players! Who knew it was that easy! Point is as soon as you trade debrincat you're looking to replace him. Add in the fact that once Giroux's contract is up/slows down as he gets older (if he resigns with us ala Spezza), and suddenly were trying to plug more holes. Just seems very short sighted. Same line of thinking behind people who want to trade Chabot now that we have Chychrun.

I really debate this and see both sides. I think what makes things difficult is the cap situation next season if the cap remains at the $83.5 m. Your post didn't mention that. The team has other positions of need such as goaltending to address as well for next season. If you ignore the potential cap situation, then yes, things are much simpler and your thought process is strong and without incumbrance. I guess the up side is if the cap ceiling is raised above $83.5 m.

Then you are trading him at the point he has the lowest value. Likely looking at a second or so coming back.

50% retained at TDL has a lot more value.
I think it would most likely be a first round pick, not a second. Trading Debrincat in the off-season would likely be easier to do than waiting for the TDL.

Agreed, but It depends on which player and picks we get back. No player is exempt from being traded.

This isn't a very fun position to be in. The guys got the track-record of someone who deserves to get absolutely paid, but when watching him with the Sens, he clearly doesn't deserve more then a handful of our other forwards.

Quite frankly, he very well could be our 6th best forward option next season if Batherson is fully healed, Giroux doesn't regress much, Norris is healthy, and Brady + Tim continue to do their thing.

It's just hard to fathom giving this guy a yearly salary that starts with an 8. He hasn't shown me that he can push the needle for that kind of payday despite was his past results may or may not say.

The Sens have a pretty tight core and have had a lot of success with signings lately. Do they dare give him a 1-year "prove it" contract before locking him up long-term? Do they trade him for far less then what we got? Do they just lock-him up for probably too much this off-season? I truly don't know.
Good Post. Regardless of what he deserves or what he will eventually get he does make the team better & deeper in skill level. There might be a prospect in the org that someday might reach DBC level of play but we could be yrs away from that while DBC is there now & dare I say it having what some think is a down yr.

Yes, Norris will make our team better & more importantly if the team remains relatively healthy should have three excellent lines next yr. Imagine if Formenton also returns & they trade a couple of players to upgrade their 3rd line RW with a goal scorer like Tofoli. I would like to try Skolov there but who knows if he can translate his scoring & playmaking to the NHL level, IMO he would certainly be better than 2 or 3 players on the roster now.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Formenton- Norris - Tofoli/Sokolov
DeBrincat - Pinto - Batherson
Ostapchuk - Kastelic - Gauthier/Kelly/Gambrell

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Chychrun
Kleven - Hamonic/JBD

Forsberg - Sogaard/Ferguson/Merilainen

He's definitely going to be an interesting case. He either signs here for a reasonable amount in the 7-7.5 range or he walks to UFA for big money and gets paid, likely by a non-contender and plays his days out on a middling team ala Gaudreau.

Don't think you could blame the guy for wanting the money. Although, it would also attract a lot of scrutiny even in poor markets. Being "the guy" when you're not good enough is a tough spot to be in. I think he fits in well here as a complimentary player.

With Dorion having the reigns past the draft and into RFA season .. he at least gets qualified so Dorion can continue to work on an extension if they can't agree to one initially.

Also disingenuous to call this a “bad year” when he’s playing on a new team with completely new circumstances. He’s never put up 40 goals here. For all we know this is a normal year for him on the Sens.

Good player but he is not going to be worth whatever it takes to sign him. We need that money for other stuff.
