maximizing earnings I get but it's hard to take the "closer to family" thing seriously when he has teams like Dallas and Vegas on his list, all much farther away from Michigan than Ottawa is.
Valid point, but I think the central point is, this is his final chance to get his big contract and he never asked to be here, even while still being a professional who never gave up on the ice like other players have.

People getting mad at DeBrincat for not wanting to stay are missing the mark.

Let's not pretend he agreed to come here and later changed his mind - he was never asked whether he had any interest in playing in Ottawa.

Dorion couldn't even be bothered to ask his agent whether he'd would want to play in Canada before trading for him.

If he had he would have got the response of "absolutely ****ing not" and that should have killed the deal.

DeBrincat owes this team nothing. He doesn't have to spend the prime of his career in one of the least desirable destinations for American star players just because we traded for him. It's asinine to think otherwise.
I hear you, although I doubt that Chicago would have wanted to let ADB know that he was on the block. As a result, even had we asked, we likely would have been denied permission to speak to him.

There are a couple of things in play here. Firstly, some guys take really poorly to being traded. I have heard players being interviewed about it and, if they're being honest, they'll all say that it is a shock to the system, especially the first time. From the sounds of it, DeBrincat took the trade pretty hard and pretty personally, maybe even more than most players.

Secondly, it's just a fact that some Americans are not fond of playing in Canada. Some are fine with it, while others aren't comfortable and can't wait to get home. It sure sounds like DeBrincat, and his wife in particular, were in the latter camp. Every time he was interviewed, every time, he always talked about the border. It was clearly a thing for him. That trade also came at a difficult time - they had just had their first child, and now his wife got to spend the season in a foreign country away from her family and friends, with her husband on the road half the time. Some people are able to just go out and make a bunch of new friends - some aren't wired that way.

Bottom line - he's a year away from being able to call his shot, and he'd like to get back to the States. That's the right of a veteran player under the CBA, and he's simply exercising his. It's the risk we took when we acquired him. The good news is that we should be able to recover about the same value we gave up, and maybe a touch more if we get lucky...

He doesn’t want to stay and I don’t care why tbh. Why should it matter why he can’t see what a great spot he’s leaving? obviously biased but I think he’s not going to find a better landing spot in terms of opportunity with an up and coming team. Byeeee.

At this point get the most you can, ideally a cheaper option for 2lw ( less production more grit or defensive acumen imo would be ideal) plus cap space plus futures.

Cap space will be super valuable in this when it’s all said and done, so maybe prioritize that in a deal so that it can lead to other deals. There’s lots of options this off-season for teams that have flexibility to make moves.
Get er done meow.

It's possible to dislike both DeBrincat for the wishy washy crap and the GM for failing to properly gauge the situation.
I'm a petty man, and I dislike both DBC and Dorion, one for not wanting to be here and one for being a f***ing moron.

Take Bratt for DeBrincat off your list of longshots.

We can skip guys who absolutely check out when the playoffs come around. 5'10", little guy who got dominated in basically every game. No thanks.

The context we should all remember is that PD was likely biased to making the playoffs to save his GM job. ADB in theory was a good add to save his own ass. But, we missed, PD still has his job (for now). This is a situation of PD’s making.

Rossi's name floating around.

Minny has a lot of deadcap money for the next 2 years but after that it frees up alot.

Would this work for DBC?

DeBrincat (extended 8x7.85mil)

for

Rossi, Goligoski (cap reasons them but RHD for us), both their 2nds 2023 (Minny+Vegas).

Sens get Rossi (we scouted him heavily in 2020), Goli can play RHD on a bottom pairing and we recoup 2 2nds in a deep draft (keep Mann's staff happy).

Meanwhile Minny gets DeBrincat to play RW with either Kaprizov or Boldy as LW's and probably puts their powerplay as top 5 in the league. They trade Dumba, let Faber come in on D and resign a few players to make their cap work.

I think Ott has a unique opportunity to turn DBC if he doesn't want to re-sign here into two good pieces that should improve the team overall. Ott doesn't need more picks or prospects right now we have plenty of them & will get more in future, but right now it's about turning this team into a playoff team & competing for a cup soon afterwards. I assume that Norris should be able to replace most of DBC's pts & they just need to find a couple more pieces to upgrade their 2nd & 3rd lines & they have a few prospects/players who could also be added to complete the lines. Priority #1 for me though is a #1 goalie & whether they can turn DBC somehow into a #1 NHL goalie & a player that would be two holes filled. Or grab a goalie from the free agency market & turn DBC into two good players would be fine too. I would also prefer a bigger & tougher player who can also produce some pts to replace DBC than more of the same.

Because he provided a list of teams that the Sens asked him for?

Still doesn't say for sure one way or the other.. more guessing.
His agent won't discuss a long-term contract, gives a dumb reason (waiting for ownership) for not discussing an extension, gave a list of preferred teams, Dorion is trying to trade a player he gave up a 7th overall pick for.

I'm not sure how much more writing on the wall you need.

Agree on all of this, except the prospects part. I was actually thinking how shitty our prospect pool is now when I was walking to work this morning.

Come out to the development camp this summer, these kids are really good & some really big & all pretty good skaters. I think that Ostapchuk, Kleven, Boucher, JBD, Greig & Sokolov could all at some point play in the NHL & there are a few others that I think could also surprise in Petersson, Nordberg, Jarventie & Thomson. And let's not forget that every yr they have an opportunity to find a guy who turns into a player in any rd (Hoffman, Stone, Batherson, Alfie) & they can always make deals with the prospects they have for better or established players as they need them.

I like our prospects, but it's shallow at this point IMO. That's mainly because of Tkachuk, Stu, Sanderson, Pinto, Norris etc. graduating, but it does mean that soon we'll have to focus on replenishing so we have guys on ELCs at all times.

I think people are sleeping on jarventie

Ok, so what's an 8 year, 66M signed DeBrincat worth? Dorion got a list. It's obviously very public. All teams on that list know they're on the list. There has to be a decent return involved for a signed player of that calibre. It may need a 3rd team involved.

Bottom line is the dude is 25 years old and is 14th in goals scored over a 6 year stretch. Signed to a long term, at market contract, he's got a lot of value.

He’ll be fine, if he picks up his intensity.
He needs to fill out and gain strength. He played full time in the AHL at 19. Not many can do that.

I agree. Produced at basically an identical rate to Greig in the AHL last year. Including in PIMs. Same draft year. Exactly the same age. Bigger frame. Better shot. Lacks the defensive awareness of Grieg but I think he's still a pretty darn good prospect. One of our few actually. Hopefully he continues to improve and learn the NA game.

He's also getting paid a massive amount of money to play a game. And he isn't stuck in any NHL city for the rest of his life. Players also get a nice long summer off. He's damned lucky to be in the situation he's in right now.

He's not being used as slave labor at the local Tim Hortons and forced to sleep on the concrete floor in the basement here.

We're at a point where all the NHLers out there need a reality check.

If there's one thing I've learned at this point in my sports fandom, it's that players almost across the board value "maximizing" their earnings as the first priority despite what else comes out of their mouth and despite the fact that even a fraction of their wealth is inconceivable to pheasants like us and adding to it would see irrelevant.

I laugh when i hear about finally being able to "set up their family" after their mega deal, while the say the 30 mil or whatever they made before that wasn't enough lol. And since when does every family of a pro sports player need to be instantly absolved of any responsibility ever again. Must be nice, I'm definitely jealous.
