I don't fault Debrincat and his family motivation in this case But, isn't this something that you'd want a GM to ferret out before making the trade? Was a trade with a high potential of being a one year and done wise? Is this something to gauge or assess our GM by?

Of course.

It's extremely rare for a team to trade a major package for a player two years away from UFA without even trying to gauge his interest in re-signing.

Dorion didn't learn his lesson from the Duchene debacle and we're going to pay the price.

I have never been a fan of this trade for DeBrincat after seeing his pre-season last year. This kid always seemed elusive in terms of trying to get solid answers about his future. I also find him to be very on and off regarding his overall performance/effort.

I don't know for sure but the time it is taking for all of these investigations is outrageous. They haven't arrested anyone but Formenton in particular is getting run through the grinder.

Due process doesn't come in to play yet but in the court of public opinion he has been beat around pretty good.
You’re right, and apparently Batherson had some nasty social media messages to early in the year.

I'm really curious what the package would be now vs at the deadline. I don't really care about it creating a disturbance in the locker room, I assume it wouldn't really and we'd have a motivated forward doing his all for his next contract - and we'll need it.

It all sounds good, but if they're in the race, he just won't be traded. We already know that's just how it goes in all likelihood.

I was super weary at the time everyone was saying it was a steal but we gave up a 7th overall ++ for a player who had 2 years of team control left and if he wasn’t going to sign the reality was going to be we get him for only one season. A really bad trade and you can’t even bring up hindsight for this one, Dorion didn’t do his due diligence and this will go into Andlauer’s evaluation of him.

Here’s hoping he gets half the value M Tkachuk got for Calgary

That is always tough. I understand the sentiment but if he doesn't want to be a part of the future, it is a tough sell to have him around.

The players will have to answer questions on his behalf or at minimum be badgered with questions that they deflect. We may get a marginally better return but in theory we should be better off having him sign with another team long term than someone trading for a short term rental.

I hope not. Calgary screwed themselves for a long time with that deal.

Assen na yo!
They could have easily just flipped Hubs/Weegs for a lot, so asset wise, we'd be f***ing laughing if we got similar. They could have ended up with 3 x 1st's + a lot if they'd just kept the 1st + Schwindt and flipped those two.

They'll be fine though. Plenty of desirable assets to move for a re-tool. So many underperformers under Sutter last year. Goaltending save% dropped 30 points year on year to a disastrous .892. Huberdeau is too good not to bounce back and Weegar is easily worth the money as is. Years 6-8 of those deals may suck, but if they're rebuilding by then, they'll be expired by the time it matters again anyways.

People getting mad at DeBrincat for not wanting to stay are missing the mark.

Let's not pretend he agreed to come here and later changed his mind - he was never asked whether he had any interest in playing in Ottawa.

Dorion couldn't even be bothered to ask his agent whether he'd would want to play in Canada before trading for him.

If he had he would have got the response of "absolutely ****ing not" and that should have killed the deal.

DeBrincat owes this team nothing. He doesn't have to spend the prime of his career in one of the least desirable destinations for American star players just because we traded for him. It's asinine to think otherwise.

Don't get the Cat hate. He didn't ask to be traded here and if he wants to maximize his earnings while being closer to family, the person responsible for acquiring him should have looked more into that. Its not like last season he didn't try, he's no Dubois and when posters say he was defensively invisible, that's not true. He isn't any Mark Stone, but he was good at carrying the puck out of our zone. He's just simply a luxury for us that we acquired without due diligence.

It's one thing if he drafted and developed him, but we literally acquired him, put him on the 2nd line instead of with our most talented player, on top of not inquiring about whether he wanted to be here.

I was surprised when I heard Dorion say that he didn't talk to Debrincat about an extension prior to squeezing the trigger.

Saying 2 years away from UFA is OK but it's one regular year and a maybe QO year. With what was known about the cap ceiling at that time and our cap situation for 2023-24, there was a pretty decent chance from the get-go that it could be just a one year stay in Ottawa.

maximizing earnings I get but it's hard to take the "closer to family" thing seriously when he has teams like Dallas and Vegas on his list, all much farther away from Michigan than Ottawa is.
