Barkov basically confirmed the deal to the finnish national broadcast company YLE. I can't bother to translate the article because there is really nothing in it, other than a few words about the bonuses in the contract and that hes back in Finland and will continue training with coaches and Ville Nieminen

I'd add that he's moving to Florida near the end of August.

Yeah, it's factually very light and nothing critical is revealed, yet there's still something quite comedic about the casual deadpan way Sasha presents the whole thing.

"There are all kinds of bonuses in it. For example, if you're the All-Star game MVP, you get some money from it."

[beat]

"I don't think that's likely for me yet."

3 years with a $3,575,000 cap hit.

That's some pretty big money. Tallon and company must really think a lot of him to give him that for his first NHL contract. I expect a lot from him in return with this kind of deal.

3.575 isnt a lot, its standard. everyyyy 2nd overall pick makes that, landeskog makes the same...because he was a 2nd overall pick. just like every 1st overall makes (or the caphit at least) about 3.775 and every 3rd overall (like huberdeau and gudbranson) makes 3.2, i already had barkov penned in at 3.5 give or take, so literally no surprise what so ever.

didn't realize that number is if he achieves all his bonuses. If he does that we will all be happy no matter what he's making.

Still wasn't expecting that cap hit. Will play a role in our team spending and who else we get if anyone for this coming season because our owners are cheap.

Cap hit is not a concern since Panthers will be so far under. Since some of the bonuses are unlikely to be achieved, like all star game MVP, Tallon and company probably already have what his actual salary will most likely be-- which will be less than his hit. I dont think this stops them from adding a veteran D or a backup goalie if need be.

however, I still dont see anyone available worth bringing in. I am all for letting the best 21 skaters make the team and let them build chemistry. If markstrom plays well, which i think he will, they should compete for a playoff spot. Optimistic? sure, but Mark can steal games and thats what playoff teams need

Congrats to my second team, the Florida panthers. Barkov is going to surpass your expectation in
my opinion. Him and hubie will be a force soon enough. Barkov is going to wreck nhlers

If he doesn't reach all of his bonuses, i.e. he doesn't make $3.75 million, cap value will also come down?

Nah, that'd be an interesting thought though.

Really, I'm sure the Panthers like having a large cap for a player who wont otherwise achieve it to its fullest extent.

It allows them to not spend as much, without having to worry about the cap floor.

Not sure about what kind of impact rookie bonuses have against cap. It seems that they are counted against cap ceiling, but not cap floor??
I tried to find information and will keep on looking:

"The New York Islanders, on the other hand, will be an interesting club to monitor next season. With $29 million committed to 12 players, the Islanders will have to spread the remaining $15 million amongst the 9 (or so) roster spots available. Again, it’s not that this amount will be difficult to fill, but they won’t be able to rely on their prospects to carry the cap load the way the Oilers have in the past. Under the old rules, the cap hits of several near-NHL ready prospects like Griffin Reinhart (bonus: $2.35M), Brock Nelson (bonus: $1.925M), Nino Neiderreiter (bonus: $1.925M), Ryan Strome (bonus: $850,000) Mike Halmo (bonus: $850,000) and Calvin de Haan (bonus: $600,000), would have totaled $13.8 million. Under the new regime, the maximum value of those players relative to the Lower Level is only $5.3 million."

What're Barkov's chances to get on the Finnish Olympic team?
M. Koivu is a lock for the 1st line, one of the KHL guys (Lehtera? IMO Kontiola/Immonen are more suited at wing) plays 2nd line, S. Koivu probably 3rd line, so that leaves 4th line for a couple of centermen.

Barkov's main rivals would be N. Kapanen and Hytönen for that 4th line spot, guys that he can easily beat.

I don't know if anyone have done it yet, but here's a list of some deadlines to records Barkov has a chance to achieve:

(Disclaimer: all the modern league records are since 1987 that Hockey-reference covers.)

2013-10-03 Youngest goal scorer in the modern league history
2013-10-12 Youngest player in the modern league history two score two points in a game
2013-10-27 Youngest player in the modern league history two score three points in a game
2014-01-12 Youngest player to play a game for the Panthers
2014-01-27 Youngest player to score a point for the Panthers
2014-02-01 Youngest player in the league to score a hat trick
2014-02-04 Youngest player to score a goal for the Panthers
2014-02-19 Youngest player in the modern league to score four points in a game
2014-04-12 Youngest player to score two or three points in a game for Florida
2016-03-17 Youngest player to score a hat trick for Florida

You forgot Granlund?

You forgot Granlund?
Nope. I don't consider him as a center, or at least as a center that you could rely on.

He's going to make the team just based on his reputation (and the media outcry leaving him out would cause) alone. Sadly, he's nothing more than a PP specialist, at least against the big boys that is.

Yes he can play winger. Didn't thought that because he played center in last world championships.
And he was pretty horrible at it. He only answered the call in the last game when he was paired with Korpikoski, and IMO Korpikoski did most of the work (which was crash the net, rinse and repeat) that caused the good scoring chances they had in that game.

as a winger Granlund will definately make team finland's olympic roster, but no way he is threat to Barkov. Don't know why Minnesota is so obsessed with him being center, he has only thrived as a winger and played center when he was best player in a team.

I've been watching this kid closely for couple years now 'couse he'd played for my fav team. And unfortunately have to say that this conversation about this kid have had a little over hyped features. Yeah, he's been incredibly ready for his age and has been dominating in FEL, BUT... Is Filppula the latest player from FEL who has proved that FEL produces good NHL players? There is Korpikoski and some goaltenders but there's 11 birth year hole between Filppula and Barkov. 12 year if compared to M.Koivu. My point is that FEL is faraway from state it had in 00-decade competition to other leagues in the world. KHL has born between these years and has sucked up couple levels from FEL's competitivity for comparing other leagues here in Europe.

All I'm saying is that this kid has pretty much proving that FEL still produces good hockey players for NHL level. Barkov is obviously the biggest talent from Finland since over ten years. I hope he surprises everyone there as he had done here in Finland and proves these speculations wrong. My quess is still that he's not ready yet for NHL. Even if never hurting he's shoulder. I hope he'll play for Tappara next season. I'll bet that Panthers has more use for this kid in age 21 than now (Save one year of entry-level deal to the future).
