At forward? Yes. Undeniable.

Defense? More NHL capable bodies but still a very untenable position.

Fact is the season hasn't even started and people are calling for the coach's head. I'd like to see how the team performs for a month before jumping the gun.

You also wanted to see how he'd finish out the year last year. AV should have been fired LAST January. If he's still rolling out the man on man defense and it's still leading to the same breakdowns as last year, and this team can still only win games when Henrik plays God and single-handedly steals them for us, do you agree that he should be fired?

If those things all happen (which, based on pre-season, they likely will), how long do you think management should let it go on before making a coaching change? We're at 87 games and counting. How many more games of this do you need to see before AV is judged more on what he's doing rather than on what he's done?

Well said.

AV is crazy/clueless enough to think that his brand of hockey is a good fit for this team as currently constructed.

Just wait until he figures out a way to get Tanner Glass in there.

Would you guys want Therrien by any chance because his leash is 5 seconds longer than AV's. By that I mean, if AV gets gassed then he will be scooped up by MTL 5 seconds later making Therrien available. You can vet me on that.

Goodness no. Therrien is just as bad as AV. Do I need to get into the love affair he had with Rene Bourque?

I was reading the article Lebrun did with Dan Boyle and thought this part was funny

"And the play that I hated the most in the post-red line era is when teams set up behind their own net and fire these long bombs to the forward at the opposite blueline, who just puts his blade out and then the puck is in the other zone. And nothing happens. I hated that. If there's a red line there, it forces the D-man to make a play. I am one of those guys who would love to see the red line back.''

AV loves that play, lol.

Anyways what dawned on me while reading that is when people criticize AV's tactics 99 times out of 100 its MAN TO MAN DEFENSE IS STUPID. There are so many tactical parts of coaching I think maybe we should expand our analysis because that one point has been beaten to death.

I could not stomach seeing Therrien coach this team every night. At least AV has done some cool things a couple times.

The most ridiculous thing is so many people were like, give AV through the year, give Girardi through the year, now it's, lets see how they perform to start the season...

When will it end? Girardi has been garbage since the SCF in 2014. AV has been garbage for the last 2 seasons.

2 years is enough of a sample size for me. Another year, another wasted Henrik year, another wasted year of our offensive prime players.

I'm done with AV and he's got me close to the cusp of being done with this team until he is removed.

Great coach his first year here. Utter mediocrity his second year but lucked into a trip to the ECF. Completely disastrous his third.

It's even worse than just squandering the primes of our current top vets. He squanders resources. MDZ has been a solid #2 defenseman for an NHL playoff team. Stralman has been a solid #2 for a top NHL playoff team. Prime resources were moved for Yandle, and AV refused to use him in a productive way.

Now it looks like he wants to jettison McIlrath, a player who should have been a regular LAST season and who outplayed half of our projected game one starters in preseason.

This is what he did in Vancouver. He feuded with top young assets and chased them out of town, and by the time he left, the team had over-the-hill veterans and nobody to replace them in the pipeline.

AV isn't a coach. He's a virus. The longer he's in charge of this team, the longer it's going to take to recover.

I honestly never understood the idea that AV is bad with young players. I didn't understand it with Tortorella either.

Neither of them are. I think what happens, especially around here, is that people get attached to prospects. When they don't perform, it's the coach's fault and not that the player just didn't develop well enough. Typically it's the coach's fault for not giving the player enough of a chance, despite the player not earning it.

That's not really "blaming" the player. Just that not everyone is going to develop the way you hope. On rare occasion, you'll have a story like what happened with Christian Dube, who got some bad advice that essentially ruined his game. Typically though, it's that the prospect just wasn't as good as hoped.
