I feel like guys get traded to places that are not their preferred destination but end up signing there long term anyway. There are no guarantees in life, if you have a chance to lock a guy like Fox up you do it. Plus as someone said we didn't waste a year of his development this way.

Absolutely you lock the guy up, but like I said in my previous post there will always be the armchair GM's who actually believe they are smarter and know more than the actual GM's who are involved in the negotiations with the other actual GM's.

my feelings about the Fox deal were that he was going to come here anyway, so why waste two 2nd rounders? He was never going to sign in Calgary and he was never going to sign in Carolina. So why waste capital on a guy who was going to come here? And it’s not like we couldn’t have used thise picks.

Fox is an amazing player no doubt, but we gave a division rival two 2nd round picks for a player who was never going to play for them.
And what if they decided to hold onto his rights and not do anything, kind of like the Kravtsov situation? Serious question.

If we play hardball with Carolina, maybe we don't get a first for Skjei, as someone mentioned above.

If we play hardball, maybe Fox isn't too pleased and a different local team close to Fox's home offers 2 seconds and gets Fox, and he likes it there?

Too many ifs for a couple of second rounder that more often than not amounts to not much.

Some players chase the puck and look to possess it before they decide what to do with it. Fox just knows where the puck should go in the moment instinctively. Somehow when ever the puck is around him it is chipped or deflected to an area or player that is beneficial to the Rangers.

He's been better than both thus far. Especially Makar, whose defense he been average.
but you know how much the norris has become about being the best offensive defenseman. fox has to keep it close to both, which may be tough. maker is an offensive wizard in his own right and headman is an assists machine. I worry his point scoring won’t be as sustainable as the others.

Maybe I just notice when he plays poorly but I feel like his defense hasn't been great this year. Seems to get pinned a lot in his zone too. Offensively obviously he's a stud.
I cant seem to find it, but his WAR stats indicated he was still in the top 95% when it came to defense.

Like you said though, when he DOES make a mistake on defense it's so noticeable since it rarely happens.

has to compete with headman and maker. could see him being a finalist again though

He also has to compete with Roman Josi who has won a Norris and has also had a strong start to the season. Makar's got to get that +/- in order or it likely won't matter how many points he scores. I know that stat gets mocked on HF but to the voters it matters.

I honestly don’t think it matters if maker goes off which he is very capable of doing.

I am a lazy fool and didn't check back in the thread at all. I also haven't watched the games of late. Life has been hectic and hard lately.

However, I found out this morning that Fox is 2 points shy of 100 career points. Quite a start to his career so far (well, ignoring the Norris).

Also Byram>Makar.

Crazy Colorado has BOTH.

I think you have to admire what they're doing there, even if the team fell short the last two years. They've really leaned into what makes them good. They don't worry too much about their weakness and continue to bolster their strengths. To have Makar and Girard, with Bowen in the pipeline, and then to still trade for Toews last year, signing Murray this year... it's bold. Colorado just says, f*** it, we don't have to copy anyone, we don't have to be big and burly or do anything that's not there already. We've got firepower, we've got speed up front, and we've got a lot of talent on the back end--let's get more. Let's be better than the entire league at what we're good at rather than trying to be good/mediocre at everything.

Seems like the Rangers could be a lot like that team: Fox, Nils, Miller, Jones. Go out and sign Murray instead of Nemeth. etc. I wish they'd be more creative and bold with their vision. I think Colorado's proven a lot already, even without a cup.
