This intrigues me. Do you know where I can find these receipts from that user? I’m in the same boat as you. I wanted Fox for a long time, and felt he had 1D potential (wasn’t sure if he would reach it or not). But I didn’t think he would be this good this quick, and also did not expect a Norris from him ever, let alone YEAR MF 2
No joke I once saw this guy say that Fox was the smartest hockey player he’s seen since Gretzky.

I’m pretty sure that’s what he said. All I know is that Gretzky and Fox were involved, and possibly Johnny Hockey.

Awesome.

Yeah but it’s not like I thought he was going to win a f***ing Norris trophy the following season.

The only person I know who has not been surprised at any point by Fox—like totally unphased—is that one Devs fan Whiskey. Fox winning a sophomore Norris was no different than the sun rising for that guy. Crazy.

Actually, have to give it up to @Beacon who pretty much nailed it in the original trade thread.

Adam Fox for 2019 2nd (NYR), 2020 3rd (cond.)

If we had a "redraft" for 2019 post of the year, this'd be a lottery pick. @Beacon nailed it, as you said.

In fairness to those who argued that "2 second-rounders is an overpay", the argument was typically about Carolina's lack of leverage, not about Fox's perceived ability as a player.

Now we're all glad we paid the picks instead of letting a division rival jump in and trade for his rights.

Yup, he was spot on. What's funny is how many thought 2 2nd's were an overpay.

Not sure people really thought two seconds was an overpay on raw value, the issue was more along the lines of whether you could have held out for less since there didn’t appear to be any chance that he was gonna sign with any team but the Rangers.

....and here's where I say the dirty little secret: GMs, unlike fans, aren't really trying to f*** over their counterparts in trades. It's a weird dichotomy of being in competition with the other GMs but needing to build relationships with them and be looked upon favorably in order to improve your team over the long haul.

Gorton could have played hard ball and leaned on his leverage more but would that have been short-sighted? Would the relationship between the two GMs been strong enough for the subsequent two trades between the teams?

Fair enough.

Very much this.

And the magic beans (draft picks) aren’t really the same coveted asset for GMs as they are for us either. It’s very easy to forget that GMs are managing a large organization full of real people, and that it’s not realistic to expect them to throw real people around like hockey cards you keep under your bed.

Success in anything is almost wholly contingent in your ability to interact with people. Very, very few people are able to succeed on pure competence alone. People need to trust and enjoy working with you if you want to achieve sustained success.

my feelings about the Fox deal were that he was going to come here anyway, so why waste two 2nd rounders? He was never going to sign in Calgary and he was never going to sign in Carolina. So why waste capital on a guy who was going to come here? And it’s not like we couldn’t have used thise picks.

Fox is an amazing player no doubt, but we gave a division rival two 2nd round picks for a player who was never going to play for them.

Just another case of the armchair GM's who know nothing nit picking about a trade or signing and once again being wrong.

rather guarantee we get the future norris winner and get him playing in the nhl with us instead of wasting a year, but thats just me.

So you think he was going to come here for free? You would have taken the chance and waited another year? A lot can happen in a year.

I feel like guys get traded to places that are not their preferred destination but end up signing there long term anyway. There are no guarantees in life, if you have a chance to lock a guy like Fox up you do it. Plus as someone said we didn't waste a year of his development this way.
