This sounds idiotic but probably rings partly true: They probably are saying that Fox has plenty of years ahead of him to win it, so they'll give one more to Hedman.

just stat surfing but did not realize, Fox is 6th in the entire league in powerplay points with 20. McDavid, Draisaitl, Koptiar, MacKinnon, and Hedman are ahead of him.

obviously this is one statistic but TDA, who we all insisted was a far superior player to Fox there, had 19 over a whole year last year.

While major awards can be a reputation/career achievement opposed to single year performance metrics, Fox has a big advantage being in the East conference compared to Hedman in the Central.

If Hedman was playing in the Canadian division, it would be a lock, but the outside of Chicago, not a big bastion of hockey writers/voters in the Central.

Could you imagine if Mika and Strome weren't struggling in the beginning of the season and Panarin didn't take a leave? Fox could easily pick up more points. But being 6th below those guys is good company.

Yeah it is kinda bullshit, Hedman has already won it. If he had been a finalist multiple times and never won: I would completely agree to give to him.

But, under current circumstances? Nah

I don't understand why a team has to make the playoffs in order to win the Norris. This isn't an MVP award. Fox has been the best defensemen this year and the Rangers most important player along with Panarin. If he loses it because of Hedman's reputation or Rangers not making playoffs I would be pissed.
I don't see why being on a playoff team should impact the MVP award or any regular season award for that matter. If you are the most valuable player to your team in the league, you should win the MVP whether or not your team makes the playoffs or not. It's like saying Mike Trout isn't the MVP because the rest of the Angels team is garbage and couldn't get into the playoffs.

Probably a discussion for another thread though.

I get that view point, but the literal wording for the Hart is player who provides the most value to their team. Whether you agree with it or not, there is a coherent argument around saying the value that you're providing is capped out because it doesn't give your team a chance to win a championship.

Norris is straight up who is the best. There's no argument around the wording there to be had.

I hear that argument, but then you are punishing that individual player for the failures of the other 19 players on the ice which doesn't make much sense to me. I know it's a bit harder to determine value in the NHL with WAR and whatnot compared to MLB but for instance if McDavid is worth 4 WAR and the next best player is worth 2.5, but Edmonton misses the playoffs is McDavid not the most valuable player in the league because he himself couldn't carry the team to the playoffs? Why not exclude all players who's team missed the playoffs altogether then? They can't be the most valuable but they can be 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc? Doesn't make sense.

I think this is even more impressive:

Fox (and Mika) have each been on the ice for 6 GF and 8 GA when on PK (i.e. Rangers scored six shorthanded goals and only conceded 8 goals when Rangers were shorthanded). That's better than Howden's ratio at even strength (10 and 14)...

For comparison, on PP their ratio is 25 GF to 1 GA.

I too do not enjoy our coaches breaking down our awesome players doing awesome shit.

That analyst dude (ex-Toronto organization and now freelance, iirc) that someone on the board posted one of his deep-dive blog into Fox recently broke him down 3X better than Quinn did.

What do you guys think is the separation between the points with him and Hedman to get the Norris to him? Under 10? Over 10?

honestly, none.

there's no way Fox wins the norris with the Rangers missing the playoffs.
