David Quinn when he realizes Gorton is pushing to win sooner rather than later and Staal, Smith, and Shattenkirk are still signed for 2 more years at $16M

I don't think this is happening but still possible. And a very funny post.

Lebrun's tweet makes it seem like he was only willing to sign with the Rangers at this point. That might have changed if the situation dragged on, which I'm sure is why the Rangers wanted to close that door now. But I can't imagine too many other teams willing to pay to get Fox's rights.

I have no idea why there are so many posters disputing that he only wanted to play here. We've only had indications to that respect.

Thats a really bad application of logic. Fox might want to sign with the Rangers, but the Hurricanes are under no obligation to trade him there. Just remember that it was assumed that Vesey would be signing in Boston or Toronto. The Sabres traded for his rights and he signed with us. Many GMs would be convinced they could change his mind.

I’d be very surprised if the Hurricanes didn’t at least get serious offers from the Islanders and the Blackhawks.

But nobody else was going to pay close to what we just did, because it was obvious that he was coming to us next season.

It isn't even that big a deal. He's more than worth the price, but it was clearly a very aggressive move by Gorton to of paid that much for one extra season of him.

If we had signed him to an ELC next year, would that one of only been two years? If that's the case, then I would say it adds some value to getting him now: an extra year of NHL development and to figure him out before signing him to his next contract.

You seem very motivated to disbelieve what the evidence is telling us. I wish you all the best with that.

. I’m happy with the player. I don’t mind being aggressive since we have the 2nd overall pick, the 18/21st overall pick, and hopefully another first. I just would of preferred holding out until the draft knowing he only wanted to be here

Well what’s close? In the scheme of things, if the Islanders offered their 2nd... how much more really is what the Rangers dealt? Yes, relatively speaking it’s significantly more. But in a larger context, a 3rd that might turn into a 2nd and a 15ish spot jump in the 2nd round is a pretty marginal difference.

The Rangers leveraged their strength in assets to get the deal done, but it wasn’t any weakness on Gorton’s part. It was just what it took.

He is on NYR roster today, so, actually, per the English language, that is precisely speculation.

Maybe you are confident in some inside info, maybe you think speculation has a more squishy definition which implies lack of rationale (such as inside info).

But actually, apparently since at least January, you have been speculating regarding Smith's future w NYR.

Maybe the emphasis is on “not on my part”.

Edit: So confirmed as I later saw @bobbob make this point himself.

Changing it up a little - was this a recent sentiment or some from the middle of winter or before?

Very literally because they had no other options. Who is a better option? Shattenkirk? Nope. DeAngelo? Nope. Smith? NOPE.

DeAngelo would’ve been interesting to try there, but he had enough on his plate with figuring out how to be a pro and stick in the lineup, which is why I think he’d be an interesting guy to try in there now that he’s established himself. If he can figure out how to turn his abilities towards a low risk game specifically for that situation, I actually think he’d do well as a PKer.

Smith is an infinitely better PK'er than Pionk.

I would have tried anyone else, it's hard to be worse than Pionk was last year.

At the end of the day, I believe the Rangers view the plethora of picks in 2019 as a quasi “tax return” to go out and get the pieces they want - even if they’re semi-inflated on a secondary market.

Whether it’s Fox, or a trade up, or another move. I don’t think the Rangers are approaching the next few weeks with the idea of hoarding.

They’ll pay the mark-ups and get the guys they want, not the guys they happened to be in position to get.

And you seem awfully gullible to believe that the Rangers were the only team to make an serious offer in the whole month (or 29 days) it’s been since Dundon said they’ll trade him. I wish you all the best with that.

Hey look I get some of you guys are attached to picks, but really look at it this way.

Fox is a player, who by many logical accounts is a top 15 player not in the NHL whose 21.

Were you going to do better with a 37 pick and a 2nd next year?
I don't think anyone is arguing that the two picks are better value than Fox, just that there was the opportunity to get Fox while giving up less.

But in the end if you can get a dollar for two dimes, how much to you want to risk the deal falling apart to get the second one down to a nickel?

Nobody is “attached” to picks. We all love getting Fox. Some of us just felt that considering he had no intention of signing there and wanted to be here we could of held out for not as high of a pick

Doubt it but NYR and Carolina could have a side deal like Namestnikov for a 2nd

Canes are in the playoff spot so wouldn’t add a nhl player now

Pretty much a 1st for two 2nds which happens all the time in the draft when a team trades up

So far so good.
Now (all) I want to see is:
  • NYR Draft Kaapo Kakko at #2
  • Winnipeg’s 2019 pick winding up at #19 or #20
  • Dallas to the WCF (NYR acquires #28 at best) and Zucc then resigning in Dallas (add another 1st in 2020)
  • Ryan Callahan + #27 to NYR for #58 and Sean Day
  • Chris Kreider dealt for the best possible return
  • Lots of Positive Wheeling and Dealing at the draft.
  • Brady Skjei + an add for Jakob Trouba. This add might hurt a bit though.
  • Jimmy Vesey and Neil Pionk to Edmonton for Brandon Manning (buy out or stash in Hartford) + Zach Kassian + 2020 2nd Rounder
  • Kevin Shattenkirk (50%) to any sucker GM hoping for a miracle. Return not that important just that it does not cause trouble in the rebuilding -process
  • Brendan Smith bought out
  • The 3 Russian Kosacks (Shesty, Kravtsov & Rykov) + Reuanen all signed to ELCs. Along with Adam Fox of course.
  • Virta with an AHL deal
  • No EK67. No Panarin. Maybe 1-2 short term vet UFAs. Maybe that Russian sniper Burdasov. Maybe nothing.
  • 7 RFAs resigned. A couple longer deals, the rest bridge contracts. All UFAs dumped.
  • Names dealt at the deadline for a 2nd. Rangers blow in 2019/2020 and Hank waives and asks management to trade him at the 2020 TDL for a “Kings Ransom”. Some extraordinary stupid GM bites...
Not asking too much now, am I?
