Need to stop bashing Pionk. He was a 23 year old rookie defenseman. They normally take longer to develop, and he's always been a late bloomer. Pionk will be significantly better in 2 years (2020-21). Let's be patient.

I agree with 95% (if not more) of your takes but I can't agree with you here.

He's shown nothing to me that indicates he'll ever be anything better than a 6/7d swing a la Raphael Diaz. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't think he has any place on any team long-term.

He'll be 24 next year, and he doesn't even really show flashes (one highlight reel goal aside) of anything promising.

Not thrilled with this trade even though I like the player. I felt Carolina had little to no leverage yet they ended up with a great deal. Giving up the 37th overall pick was unnecessary since you can get a good player at that spot. I felt the Tampa pick would be more than enough for a kid we knew was not signing there and wanted to be here. Yes I understand he has played well above his third round selection but its not like he was a first rounder. I mean if the Starts could manage to beat the Blues(I have my doubts) then it makes it better but I just felt we jumped the gun and gave up too much to a team that had no leverage

As I’ve mentioned, the Hurricanes had plenty of leverage. If there were only 3 parties here, being the Hurricanes, Fox and the Rangers, then you’d be correct. But there should be no doubt that lots of other teams put in offers, which Carolina could leverage to try to improve the offers they were getting. The Rangers were able beat those offers, largely due to the massive amount of assets they’ve brought in. It’s easier to trade 37 when you also have either #48/49 or #28/30/31 plus #58.

You felt the Tampa pick was enough to get it done, but you were wrong. If you had been right, that’s what would have gotten it done. The Rangers weren’t bidding against themselves here and unlike what you claimed just above, the Canes backs were NOT up against a wall.

only take Orpik if the idea is to tank again next year. He sucks.

I was being a bit facetious when I mentioned Brooks--he was like the first guy to my head of an example of a large right sided stay at home penalty killing d-man with a nasty edge. I could just as well used McQuaid or Ian Cole. The Rangers are going to take penalties and Quinn really only used Pionk with any regularity as a penalty killer and he was often overmatched by bigger, physical players and I really don't think any of Shattenkirk, Fox or DeAngelo are going to be any better than Pionk who to be nice had a lot of issues in penalty kill situations. It's the main reason I'm not really after Staal's head at the moment. He and Skjei are the only two somewhat reliable defensemen we have in defensive situations.....and David Quinn by the way has promised our defense is going to be better next year. The only way I see that happening is if we get a defensively dependable guy on our right side.

Well to be fair I havent hear any teams that were close to acquiring him just us. I do know this was his preferred destination. Anyway im happy we got the player and Carolina got a good deal....wit their backs against the wall lol

I'm not saying he'll be a superstar, but I think there's a reasonable possibility of him being a 3RD. I wouldn't throw him away just yet. I can see if we get value for him, but why throw him away after just his rookie season? If hes bad, who cares, next season is a season for building and testing kids, not racking up points.

The only impact Fox’s preference here had was to make the Rangers confident they could sign him if given the chance. It had nothing to do with his trade value or Carolina’s leverage in the situation.

As for other teams that were close to acquiring him, except around deadline and draft day deals you rarely hear who else made serious offers for players. For example, who else was close to acquiring Zibanejad when the Rangers did (or in the weeks before it officially happened, since the deal was in place for a little bit while waiting for Brassard’s signing bonus to be paid by the Rangers)? Who knows. Maybe 5 other teams were in the running. We’ll never know, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t other suitors. It defies logic that there wouldn’t be.

Assessing what I've read elsewhere:
This trade seems fair, not a bargain nor an overpayment.

How are we doing with defensive minded bread and butter d-man?

We do need someone capable of PKing on the right side there, otherwise that’s going to be a weakness of this team for years. Maybe DeAngelo grows into someone who can be effective at it. But that’s something that will need to be addressed at some point in time. Don’t know that it’s urgent for next season. But at some point.

I still stand by what I said. Very happy with the player but felt we didn't need to give up the 3th overall in this situation. anyway our prospect pool went from the bottom of the league to the top in like two years. Add Kakko and possibly two more firsts and it is gonna be nuts

I would've preferred we held fast on the Tampa pick until the draft, but it is what it is. Could be other factors at play here we'll just never be able to determine. Perhaps the Rangers just wanted to check off a lot of boxes by getting Fox, Rykov, Kravtsov, and Shesty on ELCs all in one shot and have one less thing to worry about heading into the draft. Perhaps the "he definitely wants to play in NY" thing wasn't as sure of a bet as we all think it was and the Rangers didn't want to chance it. Perhaps the Rangers value a D+3 kid and the "known quantity" factor quite a bit for their rebuild timeline. So many potential factors in making a decision it's impossible to tell.

Time will tell just how good Fox will be, and the remaining moves the Rangers make will probably fill in some of the blanks behind their decision and timing.

I don't know why they tried so hard to shoehorn Pionk into that role.

He and Staal were abhorrent on the PK together... Well really all the time together.

The Rangers paid the price to get him in this year. They wanted him now and they have some disposable income when it comes to draft picks.

Very literally because they had no other options. Who is a better option? Shattenkirk? Nope. DeAngelo? Nope. Smith? NOPE.

DeAngelo would’ve been interesting to try there, but he had enough on his plate with figuring out how to be a pro and stick in the lineup, which is why I think he’d be an interesting guy to try in there now that he’s established himself. If he can figure out how to turn his abilities towards a low risk game specifically for that situation, I actually think he’d do well as a PKer.

My two cents is that its worth it. Fairly high price but if you wait I don't think he develops as much at Harvard, where he is a man among boys. And once he becomes a free agent we may be clear favorites but until he is signed you never know.
Right defense was probably our biggest area of need. Now we go into the draft with all positions pretty equal and it's easier to go BPA.

What? Fox likely being willing to sign only with the Rangers wouldn't make other teams less likely to trade value for him?

These two statements...

-Fox doesn’t want to sign with Calgary or Carolina
-Fox is interested in signing with the Rangers

...don’t equate to Fox only being willing to sign with the Rangers.
Lebrun's tweet makes it seem like he was only willing to sign with the Rangers at this point. That might have changed if the situation dragged on, which I'm sure is why the Rangers wanted to close that door now. But I can't imagine too many other teams willing to pay to get Fox's rights.

Thats a really bad application of logic. Fox might want to sign with the Rangers, but the Hurricanes are under no obligation to trade him there. Just remember that it was assumed that Vesey would be signing in Boston or Toronto. The Sabres traded for his rights and he signed with us. Many GMs would be convinced they could change his mind.

I’d be very surprised if the Hurricanes didn’t at least get serious offers from the Islanders and the Blackhawks.
