They can make a deal with the whole league right now

But again if contenders are not 100% sure that he can walk into the lineup as a contributing member, they just used up their deadline assets that could have gone towards a normal rental.

Correct. And if teams have concerns about his abilities, they're probably not going to be the ones trading for him. What's the problem here?

Does McBain not want to sign with the Wild? If so, any speculation/reason why he doesn't want to?

I'm sure my team would be interested in him as a long-term 3C, but if they see him as a project that needs to work his way up to that role they'd only be willing to pay a decent price for him in the off-season instead of burning deadline assets now.

Then your team probably won't be the one that gets him, I guess.

He does not. The speculation (per Russo) is he thinks there won't be enough opportunity, but we have no confirmed reasons.

Florida 2nd + Sheahan for McBain + Rask + 5th? Seattle can use all the young NHL ready talent they can get. They help Minnesota with more capspace as well this year if needed while sending back a depth C for a late pick.

They lose his rights weeks after the season ends, there's plenty of time to make a deal with the whole league.

But after the season, there is no incentive for McBain to sign with the team that trades him.

McBain apparently feels he's blocked out by JEE on the Wild, or for whatever reason doesn't want to sign here. But he DOES want to sign somewhere and burn the first year of his ELC.

That can only happen if he's traded now really. After the season is up, he can't sign and play in a game to burn that ELC. That's the motivation for McBain and the Wild to play ball together and get him traded to somewhere where he will sign.

This is an actually good answer, that makes more sense then.

Usually RFA deals like this are in the early off-season unless it's a contender trading the RFA as part of a package for a rental, seems strange to cut off half the market by doing it at the deadline unless the Wild use him to bring in a rental instead of a pick.

I'm sure there are a lot of non playoff teams that would be happy to trade for McBain right now. The market isn't limited solely to playoff contenders.

Yeah the thought was that you want to maximize your market for the auction but if the point is to burn an ELC year as incentive to sign then it makes sense now.

Except he doesn't want to wait until August. He can't burn a year if he waits which he doesn't want to. He also wants top 6 role
And he would not get that in Minny? They have 18 guys under contract for next season and like $8 mill in cap space. And that’s with Fiala as a rfa in the summer.

Is it really about a role or like Fox he has a destination in mind?

What are we gonna do with Lehkonen?

Done
Was reported this is more to do with his dad known in NHl circles and putting it in his son's head that he's better than what he's. So in essence he's not willing to work himself up from 4c. He wants a roster spot and top 4 or 6 role right away.

The wild, Guerin tood his advisors to come up with twelve teams or wait

Makes you wonder. Most rookies know they need to earn their roster spot and you would think he would be looking at Jost, Gaudreau, and Rossi as his competition right now not JEE. There may be more to it, or he expects a top 6 role to just be handed to him in which case i'd have concerns as a GM.

Should be noted that McBain might not be a trade deadline guy.

Trade deadline is only deadline for acquiring players for playoff rosters. If the swap is McBain for a pick to like AZ, that could happen after the trade deadline and McBain could still sign and burn his ELC.

So if Monday comes and goes with McBain not traded, doesn't mean it's over.

Maybe, but unless Arizona, Montreal, Seattle and Ottawa are the only serious suitors come Monday afternoon, it's probably going to happen before the TDL. No sense in dragging it on.
