Acciari hit by Dillon - 5min major (suspended 3 games)

There you go. Head contact was unavoidable due to acciaris positioning.

Dillon should appeal the suspension. We get into theory fighting when we ask players to react robotically and pretend that reaction time isn’t a thing.

As I mentioned earlier I think "Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach" is the section that is getting it looked at for supplemental discipline.

It's an east-west approach that results in Dillon contacting mostly the head with very little to the core of the body. But I have no horse in this race and am not particularly dissecting it further.

Being tall in todays nhl is a penalty. Seen it over and over. Dillon has had prior trouble so hes f***ed.
lets turn hockey into anon contact sport. What a joke the nhl is as is society in general.
I knew what i signed up for as a lineman and accepted it and was well paid for what i did.

Unreal if he actually gets suspended for this.

More unreal how someone can question it.

Dude rolled the dice with a pretty needless hit and ended up hitting the head jackpot. He will pay the price, its not the leagues responsibility if Dillon fails to throw a safe hit, its on himself to do so.

Its not a right to hit and if something goes wrong, you can just claim it was an accident, the fact that people still dont comprehend this is absurd!

Another garbage rule written so the NHL can make any ruling they want. It should be completely irrelevant what the player was trying to do. Should be black and white, Head hit is a suspension for a minimum number of games. Intention is irrelevant where there is a high stick. It should be irrelevant in all cases.

but it would probably have also resulted in a pretty gross result no?
For me... it is all about head first.

Eg. same scenario and he crushes him in the boards and dislocates his shoulder. I say nothing.

But, the defenders are saying he was skating head first- and that is his fault.. everyone in the NHL skates head first.

Keep your head up kid!

I am still waiting for the day when one of the perpetrators take full responsibility for their actions.

"My intent was to deliver a legal hit but, I miscalculated and hit my opponent straight in the head and because of that he is now bedridden and unable to even watch TV, read or use a computer. I apologize and take my punishment, no excuses".

It happened so fast but in slo mo you see the Penguin player look up and basically skated into the contact. He will get a game
The fact the Jets have now played 3 games in a row with 5 dmen must be a record of some sort

I don't think Dillon is trying to make a hit like that with how hard he hits the boards after the hit. Nowhere for him to go there given his existing momentum.

Dillon had no control of where he hit the PIT player, why do you expect him to have any control of what would happen after the hit? These guys dont think, they act on instinct and when someone gets clocked out, they will pay the price for their playing style, pretty logical!

But that is skating with your head up. Its not actually physically keeping your head up, unless you're Lindros, its about not looking down at the puck while skating into the danger zones.

I want to see a player say they shouldn't have put themselves in a dangerous position.

He hit the boards so hard because he was trying to avoid the hit.

Well Acciari turned towards the board too prior to contact... his head would have been crushed in the boards instead.

And thats where I'm 50/50 currently on Dillon's intent/fault. Its a very common hockey play he made. The only way to avoid this outcome was to give Acciari free reign and remove physicality from the game.

Which is also a valid answer. But theres a discussion that needs to happen regarding hockey's physicality. Hitting, to separate a player from the puck, involves a risk even if all players act in good faith. Accidents are going to happen.

Had Dillon skated towards Acciari, led with an elbow, changed his trajectory, went late, etc, my discourse would be different. But as it is, it seems like an unfortunate incident.

Im very curious to see the outcome from the DOPS and the video they usually release to explain their decision

I thought the video was persuasive: here are the criteria for the rule violation; here is how the hit meets the criteria.

They just don’t justify the number of games suspended. Why not 1 or 4 or 10? No reason given

They do a good job explaining why the hit was suspended but very little work on the length

I don't think the hit was really dirty or targeting the head. But that was the outcome, so in that sense a suspension is fine. 3 games is where the DOPS wheel of fortune landed so that's what he got, you win some you lose some...

You wont as the objective of hockey is to score goals and to have the best chance of doing so the players will skate in a manner that allows them to go fastest and control the puck in the most efficient way.

Its not up to the player with the puck to be as safe as possible and protect himself from violent illegal attacks outside the rule book - its up to the hitter to not break the rules and respect their fellow colleagues on the ice - in this situation Dillon failed massively and has to face the music of a 3 game well deserved suspension! Sadly the injured player wont be facing much of an existence outside a dark room.

The only way you will hear players talking about putting themselves into dangerous positions is if you watch a different sport called ice-hitting or ice-violence for example or some kind of competition where violence is the primary purpose!

Toews said it about the Mitchell hit that concussed him and if I recall correctly Matthew Tkachuk did about the hit that broke his sternum in the playoffs last year.
