Acciari hit by Dillon - 5min major (suspended 3 games)

Dillon steps up at the blueline like that about 5 times a game. I suppose there is a bit of recklessness in that but the opposing player doesn’t usually lean forward to poke the puck like that.

That being said, when a guy is bleeding on the ice like that a major is definitely the right call. Might get a game.

After watching this multiple times in a row.

I think 1 game but honestly I can't guess because The NHL does whatever they want on suspensions. Definitely do not think this warrants 3+.

Dillon is moving upwards prior to the hit, not as a result of change in momentum due to contact. If he stays level, I think he might still clip the head. and I'd say he'd have no culpability. But he did send himself upwards. That's an issue about how hitting is taught.

That's a stupid, reckless, attempt by Acciari, and it's like watching a slow-motion wreck for that reason.

I think there's a slight lunge before contact that's getting Dillon in trouble here. He turned and lifted his elbow after bracing but the point of contact wasn't the elbow. Acciari loses the puck and then is caught badly leaning forward. To be fair, that should have been a dump in before that point.

I hate hate hate headshots, whats the hockey play here? I think this situation opens an interesting debate.

Acciari skated in a way that made legal contact straight up impossible to perform without a big injury risk. See screenshot below, right before the contact happened. He is skating fast by the board, leading heavily with his head, FACING the board.

Dillon didnt charge or anything. He positioned himseof against the board and used his shoulder to stop Acciari's progression and separate him from the puck.

On one hand, the onus is on the defending player to recognize a dangerous situation and not apply actions with unreasonable risks.

On the other hand... in this example Acciari skated the whole neutral zone in a vulnerable position. Can an offensive player effectively remove physical play from hockey by virtue of putting themselves in a vulnerable position long enough? How long is too long?

Ie. With the way Acciari was skating, there was no way to use physical play safely to separate him from the puck. Do we still put the onus on the Jets and Dillon to only use stick checks? How far can Acciari skate in a vulnerable position and the Jets unable to touch him? Could he have gone the whole 2/3 of the ice being invulnerable to hits due to being in a vulnerable position?

Sucks to see such plays, it seems more of an unfortunate accident resulting from a hockey play than a deliberate intent to injured though.

To the surprise of no one, he is getting a phone hearing.

I've gone back and forth on further discipline on this one. After watching more video, I think he's going to get multiple games.

Did Acciari contribute? I don't think it matters here.

Dillon's approach was East-West and he clearly chose to hit him in the head. He could have changed his approach by three degrees and hit him in the shoulder.

Exactly, I notice a lot of players will lunge themselves upward to make a hit and this is an example of that.
They're all trying to "posterize" someone instead of just skating through their check. Comes from not being properly taught HOW and growing up watching a generation of hockey where guys could light others up with impunity.

Dillon is attempting to make a clean hit but unfortunately ends up being a headshot. If we want to make hockey safer you need to remove hitting altogether.
How is he attempting to make a clean hit?

We all see that the first point of contact is on Acciaris head.

If acciari didn’t lean forward Dillon would have missed him and slammed himself into the boards.

You can also see where’s he’s looking while skating towards acciari

Ok…I know he wasn’t penalised for this so it won’t play a part in the leagues decision but this hit shows how Dillon can be. He totally could have hit more body on this one but he smashed the guys face first. Broke his jaw.

No he couldn't, it's a fast game.

Why would he not be eligible to be hit there? I mean, he's skating into the opponent's blueline face first for absolutely no reason. Dillon is barely moving, Acciari pretty much skates into him. Nothing elevated.

Sorry but that's not even a penalty to me. Learn to receive a hit.
He's eligible to be hit, just not in the head. It did look to be a tough spot, he was leaning forward, etc...and I think that will come into play in terms of suspension or lack thereof, but call during the game was the correct one.

Didnt look good. This one gets reviewed me thinks.

How is this a suspension? Acciari stuck his head out like he was delivering a check face first. Dillons arm is completely tucked with zero extension. This is acciaris fault at worst.

Well the NHL disagrees with you. A hearing has been scheduled today. Friedman said on radio he expects a suspension on this.

Indeed. You can argue incidental contact and mitigating factors all you want, but the principal point of contact was literally the head. Neither player altered their course either - both skated in straight lines. I'm a Jets fan, and there's no defending this hit.

I'm guessing because of the angle of approach and that Dillon didn't hit squarely to Acciari's body. He comes in East-West and gets mostly the head with some body contact.

If Dillon comes straight at Acciari up the boards, he would hit solidly to the body and still make head contact due to Acciari's position, but it would be legal.

Look at the view where you can see his face. He had plenty of time to adjust his path.

He should get multiple games
Clearly you never played.

The NHL has gone to a result based system apparently and Acciari got hurt so Dillion will get suspended. It doesn't make much sense, but whatever.

He did stick it out. But he didn’t stick it out last second.

Dillon had plenty of time to see where Acciaris head was and adjust accordingly.

He’s also coming from the side. So if Acciari hadn’t stuck out his head Dillon would have had to turn more towards acciaris body to even touch him.

I think that shows he hit him there on purpose.

That won’t change the level of punishment. He’s gonna get 1-2 games but I think it should be more

Hahaha you’re right. I’ve never played nhl hockey. I’ve played hockey my whole life though. Contact for a nice chunk of it.

I assume you’re an ex pro hockey player with expert opinion in this. If you’re not…well lol

Nevermind. You’re a jets fan. Understood

Except completely nailing the head.
If you extend your head out and the other player has his arm tucked in, who is responsible for the position they put themselves in? Why are you acting like Dillon did something illegal? Show me where you see him targeting the head? I see zero extension. I see a player with his arm tucked in standing up right, and I see a player with his head completely outstretched from the rest of his body making it be the first point of contact. Acciari has a responsibility to himself to not make himself so vulnerable because any hit unless delivered by midget wouldn’t have hit his head there. And even Dillion would have had no time to adjust himself with how late Acciari extended his head outwards. It’s like running head first into a wall and blaming the wall for the damage you took when you’re the one who ran head first into it.
