What's funny is I could see Mika getting an 'A' next year if McDonagh, Zucc, and Nash are all gone lol.

Kreider, Staal and Miller/Hayes all with As for now. Let a leader emerge. Please not DJ Bleach Blonde. I’m not one of the ones calling for him to be traded or who is particularly unhappy with him. I think he’s a bit soft especially for how big he actually is but I like him as a player and just wish he was “on” more often. I think eventually, if we can find a legitimate C he’s a excellent RW trigger man. But I do not want him wearing a letter. He’s just so mild.

Part of me took this news conference and newsletter to mean that this isn't just a quick turnaround re-load for next season, they're eyeing this as a multi-year process.

I also took it to mean, without directly saying it, that ALL options are on the table - not just the names that are popping up in speculation and rumors.

I can’t see how anyone would be unhappy with the organization today.

Very classy of them to come out to the fans and do this when they didn’t have too.

We’re with them make the moves it’s time. Makes you feel like way more than ufas are moving along here. No one is crying about Holden.

one thing though Tampa is going to trade for Mcdonagh and play him with who Girardi? That’ll be fun

I think everyone knows AV is a dead man walking. You let him finish out the season with dignity and as a thank you for years of solid service. And you get the added benefit of not having a reputation among coaching candidates for being a blowhard manager.

I know a lot of fans want to see blood but the NHL is a small community and reputation means a lot.

I'm BUSTING, Edge, I'm BUSTING.

This is so exciting. Jack Hughes 2019????

He held everyone accountable...from the players to toe management..but he refused to put it on any 1 person...that's the right answer imho.

Absolutely!!!!! Anyone that has ever been a manger, leader, captain, etc. knows that is the right approach. You don't single out one person when it really isn't one persons fault. Is AV a problem? ABSOLUTELY. Is he the whole problem? Likely not. Gorton went out there and did the right thing.

The inclusion of CHARACTER has me a little worried. The Rangers targeted high character players to build this current core (and previous versions of it) and they ultimately failed. Instead of scouting for character, why not spend that time identifying players that can score goals and create offense?

He said speed and skill too.

You need all 3.

I read it the same. I also have to feel like something is, if not imminent, than progressing rapidly. There’s been a lot of smoke with McD to TB rumors. I imagine that perhaps they’re not completely in agreement yet, but down to hammering out smaller details to balance a deal, or something to that effect. Making this announcement without knowing for sure that a bigger name is about to drop would be surprising.

There was not much to hear, the Gorton part was like watching someone who does not want to answer questions, not answer questions, while his boss is looking over his shoulder. Gorton used the word rebuild, Sather used the word playoffs and said Gorton had a lot of work to do, everyone can choose their own conclusions but to me, that indicates how far their opinions vary, and likely shows there will be pressure on Gorton to make the playoffs next year, because that is how all good rebuilds work.

Sather was clearly not being totally serious with the playoffs comment

The only thing that bothered me about the press conference was they never mentioned how overrated and lacking part of the fan base is in regard to Hockey knowledge. And used many of the “duh duh, they should fire AV posts despite his success cause he has no players now,” from this site.

Maybe Glen S. is not happy with the current situation; a rebuild do not translate go full tank in the next 5 years.

I have no faith in Jeff Gorton leading this rebuild...he has made every mistake possible and has destroyed this team that Glenn handed to him...letting Eric Staal walk away ( 28 goals last year 23 goals this year and an all star game appearance )...trading Hagelin for a taxi driver and some taco's ( I know I know it was a salary dump ) should of dumped other players not Hags...getting really nothing for Stepan...letting Raanta leave and giving us Pavelic as the back-up...Gorton is horrible at his job...we will be bad for a long long time.

You may have a fair point with Staal in hindsight but his play during his short tenure with us didn't leave any indication that he would be able to perform like that. He did score some goals for us but he didn't score at the pace he's putting up now. When we got him, he looked like a shell of his former self. Even though in the end Staal may have been someone that would've been worth keeping, it would've been very hard to tell. At the time, it looked like another superfluous contract that we would be at the mercy of for an aging veteran. There was a lot of risk. I would hardly call this a botch on Gorton's part.

Regarding Hagelin, he was a cap casualty not a salary dump. He started to play above his worth and was pending a raise that we couldn't afford. Expectations for a return, shouldn't be high in the first place. If you're able to get anything out of a player that most likely won't be coming back, then it's a win. I can agree with you if you're saying that he didn't get the best package he probably should have received for him, but again, we weren't going to get much anyway for a cap casualty of his ilk. Even today, he is overpaid and the entire Penguins fanbase knows this. Perhaps you can put some blame on Gorton for not maximizing the return for Hagelin but I can't blame him for not giving him a raise. He would be a frustrating speedster that we would probably rag on for having stone hands most of the time while making much more money than he's worth.

The Stepan/Raanta trade I still think was a good move. The biggest prime mover for the Stepan trade was his declining play coupled with a contract re-up. A lot of people that refer back to the Stepan trade as a bad trade, are thinking too much of the Stepan from a few years ago and not of the Stepan from last year. While they both regard the same person, they are completely two different iterations. Stepan's performance has been declining for the past two years. His foot speed and skating went from looking mediocre to bad. His point production went down and his effort became very questionable. He was a complete no-show in the playoffs last year. The only thing I remember of Stepan last year, was him yelling at Lundqvist "RELAX, RELAX, RELAX" in our elimination game at the Senators. I don't remember him doing anything else for us in our playoffs. A player that has been declining while also having a lot of miles and wear and tear on his body, should be treated very cautiously upon a contract renewal. If we still had the Stepan from 4-5 years ago, then I totally agree with the people that preferred to keep him. However, we didn't have the Stepan from 4-5 years ago, we had the Stepan of 2017-2018, which is a much different player. Time is always of the essence and Gorton played this one well.

All in all, I don't think Gorton has been bad. There's only so much someone can do in a short period of time. Lets see what he does in the next year. You may very well be right in the sense that Gorton will fail us in the end, but I don't think his decisions thus far give any strong certainty to that just yet.

I thought that this was extraordinary. As a fan since (sigh) the early 1960s, I lived through a lot (unfortunately) of these moments. I remember when the Rangers traded Andy Bathgate to Toronto and got back a lot of assets that were important in the early years of the Francis era (Nevin, Seiling, Brown). I remember living through the crazy days when Francis traded Ratelle and Park, and got rid of Giacomin, signalling the end of an era. I recall Sather's fire sale before the 04-5 lockout.

But none of these was addressed directly, to the media and the fans, as this was. To have management come out in such a public way and address us, is extraordinary. It makes me proud, in a weird sort of way, to be a Rangers fan. It made me feel "important" and part of the process. They didn't have to do this. The fact that they did, especially from two men who are rarely seen, are secretive, and rarely address the media, makes it even more amazing.

It is possible, in this era of relative parity, to turn things around fairly quickly. But, I'm expecting a few lean years here. As long as my teams come out and puts in effort, plays with passion, and progresses, I'm OK with a total rebuild here. It is exciting. As fans, we just have to remain patient during the long Novembers and Februarys to come.

Hopefully, some moves can be made before the trading deadline. It's going to be a long view weeks until then. After that, the next important date on the calendar is the draft.

Those fans who have been clamoring for the team to "tank" and commit to a total rebuild (not a retool on the fly) have gotten their wish. I know many likely feeling smug and saying "see."

But, it is likely going to make for a few, painful, seasons. Patience is the word. But, I think today was a good start. Kudos to JG and GS.

We chose the right year to suck and acquire first round picks, considering how high people seem to be on this draft class.

First now we have around a 1-in4 shot at a top 3, who all likely would each have gone #1 overall last year.

I really, really hope you're right but still would like to see him go for the sake of evaluating where players stand before moving them.

Disagree. The guy who makes deals out of strength is always better off. Appear like you are still in it, rather than saying: we suck and are selling.
