/ I could be wrong, but I believe he always had more TOI than AP.

Who else is available that's better than Rants?

He is still a beast and exactly what we need - more talent and size. We are in great shape cap wise and can afford him. we can still search for our 2C and defence when better opportunities arise.

Which is why the whole Slaf playing like Brady T fairy tale means he’s going to have to drop them since it’s now customary to jump on or start swinging at any player that delivers a solid hit.

Not condoning fighting but Slaf can’t even defend himself against an onslaught and since he can’t even do that, he becomes an injury liability.

Depends on the team and what their needs are. A team deep in centres but thin at LH would be the perfect match.

Yup I said as much when we played Ottawa and Ridley Greig went after him. If he's going to play that way he needs to keep his head on a swivel because they will be coming at him.

You wear down teams in the playoffs by playing the body over a 7 games series, not by sending a goon out to fight every single guy on the oppositions team.

In today’s NHL, players jump you for a solid and legal hit. It’s sad really.

You want to be physical, you need to learn how to drop the mitts or some will have a field day. You might think it’s not important, I beg to differ. Dylan cannot be physical and not be able to defend himself. He can’t turtle.

This is what makes guys like Olivier earn 4M a year. Josh Anderson earns a lot because he can do it and still contribute. Slaf is learning that. Big guys won’t be gentle. You need to be able to defend yourself.

But I guess we disagree on that point. That’s fair. I prefer talented players with sandpaper. Not wannabes that can’t walk the walk.

Multiple 100 point seasons. 101 points in 81 career playoff games. That’s not just standing around and waiting for MacKinnon to do everything. He’s one of the best players in the league. Look at how Panarin changed the Rangers. Gorton knows what an elite player can do. Three core players make under $8m each, you can afford a 12m+ player.

Think he needs a skillful playmaker to produce? Well here you go, play with Demidov.

A lot of people like to point out that he played with MacKinnon so his numbers are inflated. Do people forget that MacKinnon was a disappointing 50ish point player until Rantanen came around?

So which 8M dollar winger are you dropping down to play on the 3rd line? Laine or Slafkovsky? It sure as well won't be Caufield, and if you want Demidov to play with Rantanen it won't be him. This teams weakness or achilles heel if you will is at the 2C spot, Rantanen being good or even great is irrelevant, he'd be an extremely expensive luxury W that's just not needed.

He's already reportedly turned down a 13-14M contract offer from Carolina. I'm sorry it just seems like a dumb use of our cap space, when we have much more pressing needs.

He surely isn't producing in Carolina as you'd expect either with the way you're describing him.

Unless we can somehow turn Laine into Rantanen by moving Patrik for something else, I just don't see the fit. Atleast for next season.

More than a stopgap.

I’d like to steal away Beniers, Wright or Catton. … so would still call them.

I would stay away from Cozens. He may turn out to be a great buy low candidate but his contract is expensive and if it doesn't hit you're really screwed. He had amazing potential but has crashed and burned. I'd just stay away.
